owners of 980 ti's and titan x's, how do you feel knowing your gpu is slower than the next $350 "1070" card?

your resell values are terrible. $250 tops for cards that went for $650 - $1,000.
>i can relate, i currently have a 980 ti
>Skipped 980
>Wasn't a problem at all because nothing except one game (W3) has justified the purchase in the last 3 years
Waitbros won
Been in this game since the FX days. I expect my card to be 1/2 as fast as the next gen at 90% of the cost.
Luckily, NZ is half a year behind the curve and the 980ti strix I have are still 1.1k.
How do i know if my computer can upgrade to the 1080?
got the GTX 78 in 2013. still have 1080p display and no games go below 60fps anyways. Not upset :^)
>>54421634
I live in Japan and it takes them forever to react to anything. I could go sell my 980 Ti this week for a high price but I won't because it will be months until the good 1080's are in shops and I'm still not convinced it will do that much better than the 980 Ti in non-VR games.
>>54421634
Don't own Nvidia, but these cards were top of the line for over a year, where have you seen that? In hardware generations past GPUs used to become obsolete practically every six months.
>Old cards perform worse than new cards

and besides, msrp gonna be 379 - that's closer to 400 than to 350.

lol... i just built a computer with a 980 for my friend earlier today...
A decent 980Ti will be performing just below a 1080, if not the same. At most it's a 20% improvement over the 980Ti, but that's pushing it. However, since the power requirement is lower for the 1080 and the potential for good OC is there for the 1080, 980Ti prices will drop but not too hard. Expect them to be around $400 as they still outperform the 1070.
>b-but muh better than titan X
Pretty much all non-referrence 980Ti's perform 20-30% better than a titan X.
Anyone with a 980Ti is best off keeping their card and waiting for a 1080Ti unless you absolutely need that 10-20% increase. 980Ti's are going to flood the market soon but there won't be hardly any 1080's, and we still need to wait for other companies to make their own version.

>>54421818

>>54421732
well nvidia's asian jew ceo claimed the 1080 in normal gaming situations it will be about 20 - 30% tops faster than a stock 980 ti.
considering its hard to pick up a stock 980 ti these days and most are factory overclocked to be around 10%ish faster than stock, a 1080 will be roughly 10 - 15ish% faster.
what i find interesting is there claim that the 1070 will be faster. if the low end is 20% for the 1080, then that would put the 980 ti on par with the 1070. 30% for the high end? 10% faster than a stock 980 ti. only way the 1070 can be all around faster is if the gap between the 1070 and the 1080 is 15% or lower. its been awhile since we had such a small gap like that. 970 vs 980 was 20%. 780 vs 780 ti was 20%.

That's what I don't get either. Who would buy a 1080 for $600 when you can have two 1070's for $750 and absolutely demolish it? The only reason to get the 1080 is if you want two of those too.
>>54421852
Keep in mind they're talking about the reference 980Ti, and they're trying to push hard that the 1080 is going to be so much better.
They're just baiting people into these cards so they can drop better version next year.
>>54421845

man i bought my 980 ti last month.... and its a gigabyte.
if its truly a 10% difference between a 980 ti and a 1080 then i'm fine with that. that's nothing. shit even 20% is nothing considering that's the difference between the 980 and 970 and it never made a difference.
just annoying with resell value considering how much these cards cost. cpu's are great investments. core duo series lasted ages and the i series have been lasting even longer. seemed like gpu's where going down the same path. i remember selling my 670 for $270 back in 2014 with the 7xx series in full force and i only paid $340 for it in mid 2013.
but with nvidia launching a 1070 card for $350 alleged to be faster than the 980 ti... even a 10% destroys their resell value. in my area i'm looking at $200 - $250.

Depends entirely on the application.
Given that looks to be in the region of a 200w TDP card I would guess Nvidia is going to have a pretty thirsty architecture (at least compared to what polaris).
Now we know polaris isn't the high end chip - thats going to be vega, but it will be interesting to see if the faster polaris chips can compete against the 1070. That is where a lot of the money is. I do suspect this time around Nvidia will have the housefire cards.

Well we also have to consider Nvidia is very good at marketing and a lot of their presentation charts are fast and loose with the specifics. Based off the leaked 3DMark 1080 benchmark the 1080 isn't that far beyond the higher clocked 980ti models (and well within reach of those who manually overclock to over 1400mhz).
Still AMD has learnt the hard way not to play their hand too early and I suspect they are waiting until Computex to strike back. Remember :Nvidia's aggressive marketing of the 980ti is one factor into why the Fury x was more or less dead on arrival.
If the 970 fiasco taught us anything is not to take anything Nvidia (or AMD) say as gospel.

Ehh still happy with my GTX680, there hasn't been much to stress it out. Though cheaper 980's will be good
>>54421634
This doesn't upset me in the slightest, and I say this as a 980 owner.
I bought the card at release for a reasonable price and was ok with the performance.
The 390x trouncing it for much less money with greater VRAM upset me more than the idea of the 1080 being twice as good as my 980
>>54421634
I've been using my 980Ti for almost a year now, nothing wrong with that?
Buying a top of the line card you (should) know that within a year, mostly, it will lose its value. It's the same with buying phones, really.
Also if you care that much about a few hundred euros you shouldn't be buying 500+ euros graphics cards anyway.

I dunno guys, this seems like a pretty pathetic launch. 75% of the shit shown was new API's and all their amazing "architecture improvements" can be explained by the die shrink. I am not particularly impressed. I really need to upgrade though because my 760ti keeps shitting the bed due to overheating in my little itx case and I have to go with nvidia because I use iray in substance painter/designer. fuck.

>good
>demanding
The only game in the last years that was appealing and demanding at the same time was witcher 3 and you could easily play it on much older gpus just fine. I mean, just look at the rest of the market. There's what, fucking assassin's creed? The 500th rehash of call of duty and its clones? Press X To Win batman games that run like shit? Give me a break.
Dark Souls 3 runs on literally anything so that's out as well and there isn't a single demanding game in the near future announced or released that will justify this shit. In fact, I looking forward to Ni Oh, FF XV, NieR Automata, WiLD and RiME way more and those are all ps4 exclusives.
Let's be honest here. Nobody thinks about what games they want to play, we just keep buying these expensive gpus because it gives a nice adrenaline rush and the feeling that your life is "improving" somehow and that "things are going to be awesome" in an extremely vague sense.

It's always best to skip the next batch of cards and upgrade to the one right after because the difference from each gen doesn't really justify the pricetag.

>>54423746
The thing is upgrading cpu is just not worth it, I'd rather be limited by the cpu and just use that extra money for a better gpu. I have an i5 2500k overclocked at 4.5 ghz and still see no reason to upgrade. I really hope zen or the next intel cpu makes me do it.
>>54423278
>ds3 runs on anything
I have a passive GT640 and i barely hit 30fps
>>54423759
That is the whole point - because you are limited on the gpu front. The only way for cpu differences to matter is to add more gpu grunt.
This is why 4k in particular sees AMD's cards pull ahead in relation to Nvidia ones - their cpu overhead isn't really in play anymore.
Pic related - while there are some odd lows on the Intel chip performance is very similar because (again) the two 970's are still the limiting factor.

Although you're right, now that the new console engines have made their way back to PC apparently you need a 140w hyperthreaded CPU in a PC to beat a 65w laptop APU in a console. go figure.
AMD have such an uphill struggle, they really need to release some nrw cards before these new nvidia cards or they're going to lose even more of the small percentage of the market they currently reside in.
I was planning on buying a 980ti to upgrade my 280x before heading back to my home country in the 16th, but I guess I'll pass on that.

It would be more accurate to say that cpu performance doesn't matter within that scenario. It is worth pointing out that GTA V only really hits 4 threads - in games that scale furuther (lets say...ashes of the singularity) then even at 4k you will see a greater delta between the chips.

Actually, it's kind of both. If you have 60Hz monitor, it doesn't matter one bit if one CPU can give you 10 extra FPS over another when both of them consistently keep the framerate over 60.

remember when the $330 970 beat the $669 780 TI in almost every game? i do. it's not healthy to be delusional anon.

This
Gonna pick up the 1070, best choice for good frames in 1080p.
Not gonna wait for AMD so they can just deliver another fail series like Fiji.
>>54424624
Under that stipulation yes. If we assume an infinite refresh display for the sake of the argument more raw fps won't magically alter how much better X cpu is over Y cpu under gpu bound situations.
>>54424633
Remember when 780 ti beat 290x in almost every game? There's a reason why I added the caveat about Nvidia gimping maxwell.
And when is AMD gonna release their cards?
>AMD has only cards to compete against the GTX1060
AYYYYY
>>54424705
Who cares? Can people really not afford a $350 1070 that beats a Titan X?
>>54424736
You mean the market segement where the most money is? Polaris is all about getting OEM's onboard.
>>54424755
>Who cares?
People who don't want to play russian roulette with drivers.
>>54424772
>You mean the market segement where the most money is?
Professional cards
>>54424772
Consoles.
>>54424772
Mmmm yes, laptops.
>>54424841
Consoles earn AMD (and in the past, Nvidia and IBM) very little money. AMD is primarily using their console domination to leverage their architectures.

980Ti here.
I don't really give too much of a shit. I bought an ultrawide 3440x1440 monitor a few months back and needed a new card to run it so I got a 980ti. I work for a living so I don't care about the money too much and I'll still have this card for years.
You just have to buckle down and buy a card at some point or the only game you'll be playing is the waiting game, forever. The next new meme is always right around the corner.
>>54421634
happy that progress is being made. buying 1080 as soon at it's out
>>54424882
You'll have it for years? You'll be struggling to drive that monitor with your card by this time next year for sure.
>>54424909
What? No. I don't play a ton of AAA games. I had a 670 for over 4 years and the only reason I upgraded was because of the monitor.
>>54424545
A cpu can only handle so many frames per second. At 4k, your cpu doesn't matter as much because your gpu is nowhere near powerful enough to approach that limit. At 1080p it's much easier, that's why there's very little difference in performance at 4k.
An i3 2100 may only be able to process 70 frames per second, but the gpu won't get close to that framerate at 4k.
>>54425608
People from 2009 haven't tried it these days so they think it's bad.
