What is the best non-Firefox browser, /g/?

Been using IE 11, and it's fast AF and super safe, but it is (yet again) falling behind Chrome in features.

Firefox sucks mega ass, though, so do NOT recommend anything by Mozilla.

Should I just start switching to Chrome? Or what about Edge? I NEED a couple add-ons for Edge, but I haven't heard jack shit about when MS is ACTUALLY going to open up the platform...
>>
What's the simplest program for cutting video? It doesn't need to do anything else other than that.
>>
>>54383158
Chrome, what the fuck are you using IE for?
>>
>>54383244
Windows Movie Maker does that...
It allows you to split the video and even preserves audio on each side.

Unless you got a Mac or Linux, in which case IDK.
>>
>>54383299
Oh lel I didn't know you could still get that post-XP. Thanks. SQT indeed.
>>
>>54383296
it starts noticeably faster than Chrome and its security is integrated with Windows Defender.

That's why I've been doing it.

Without integration of my security software, I'm a little leery of going to Chrome.
How much does Chrome automatically protect if you accidentally click a bad link? Does it either refuse to run the scripts or alert the OS?
>>
How ridiculously unqualified can I be and still work in tech support? I'm currently looking for a part time job during college and all I'm finding are call center style tech support gigs. I'm assuming that as long as I'm not completely retarded I'll be okay. However, if I ever wanted to get hired as in house tech support for a company what should I bother learning? I'm thinking that certifications might be useful, but I don't quite know where to start.

I also have the option of just going for a CS degree, but since I'm shit at math and I have little to no desire to go into programming on a professional level I feel like that would be pretty pointless.

I have a thinkpad X1 Carbon and for some reason the touch sensor isnt turning on during unlocking, making me use the pasword instead like a fucking idiot. does anyone know how to fix this?

When a computer website lists the specs, what does "1 DIMM" mean?

Specifically, does this mean there is only one DIMM slot on the motherboard? Or, does it mean that the included memory is only occupying one of the DIMM slots?

"8GB DDR3L SDRAM (1 DIMM)"
>>
>>54383427
it means you have 1 RAM chip installed

So, that's 1 x 8GB DDR3 RAM
>>
What would be the best antivirus for a small business (5 computers)?
I was thinking in getting Norton Security Plus.
I'm scared of that virus that encrypts all your data.
>>
>>54383476
oh yeah, to follow up on that, I'm not sure how many free slots you have, I just know you have 1x 8GB RAM installed.

You'd have to check something that specifically tells you how many slots.

Try Speccy or CPU-Z
>>
>>54383476
Cheers. I guess I'd have to find the motherboard info to check how many slots there are?
>>
>>54383496
>>54383503
Thanks.
>>
>>54383495
For a business, I would recommend: NOT Norton.

For further description, read on:
>McAfee
>Kaspersky
>NOT Norton
>Trend Micro
>Malware Bytes
>NOT Norton
>DEFINITELY NOT NORTON

I hope this helped.

Use a better AV if you care about security
>>
Is there a difference between WD Reds, Greens, Blue, Black? Or is just marketing meme?
>>
>>54383548
Well, the thing is, there's nothing wrong with WD. I've literally NEVER had a problem since I stopped paying for AV software.

Anytime I clicked something dangerous, IE would block it and have me redirect to my home page.
Less than 10 seconds later, WD would remove it and have me restart.

What is the advantage of using Firefox over Chrome? I ask because I already use Chrome and a bunch of add-ons that I find very useful. Is the extra burden on internal memory really noticeable to you guys? If so, when?
>>
>>54383628
Yeah and I've never had a problem without AV but you seemed to have security concerns

Though if WD fails detecting something, chances are you won't even know

free AV solutions like avast have over 99% detection rate compared to around WDs 90% according to avcomparatives

I dunno why but this radio app live stream keep skipping back every fifteen minutes and play in a four minute delay(low does a live stream play four minutes in delay anyways?) Now I get these messages. It is really annoying. What the hell is up?
>>
>>54383664
A lot of AV software actually includes a license for 3-5 PCs anyway. And upgrading ones that don't can usually be done.

Here, check this offer. It's for McAfee.
says it's unlimited devices
1 yr/$24.99
http://smile.amazon.com/McAfee-Total-Protection-Unlimited-Devices/dp/B010P91LYY/ref=pd_sim_65_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=51fjlD1giuL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR119%2C160_&refRID=1TSX008T5H91396HW12J

Something like that is one possible option
>>

I tried Avast, actually. It used up a ton of system resources, and it only worked for like a year before wanting me to buy.

I suppose I could just grab another few small ones.

> extra burden on internal memory
The only time icecat (free fag version of firefox, basically the same thing) used up a lot of memory was when I was on one of my monthly porn/hentai rummages I had to open about 800 tabs of download pages before my browser started to spill over into my swapspace. I got 16 GB ram and about 1-2 GB were already in use by other programs so it's not really worth losing sleep over in regards to ram
>>
>>54383793
I am asking about Chrome memory usage though.
>>
>>54383793
not person you were talking to, but holy shit!

How can you EVEN need that many tabs/much porn?

Not home right now so i cant screenshot my folders for proof but my hentai folder is pushing 1.5 TB and about 400 GB JAV ranging across 4 HDDs
I chose a target website and opened up every hentai (they had a list where they show everything from #-Z so I just ctrl + clicked every one) so I could go through and inspect each one to see if I want to download or not. It usually takes a day or two. My collection is hand picked. I've got something like 200 still qued to download with jdownloader and another 100 on qbittorrent

This is what I do with my free time. I could go into more detail but that's probably not need.

Reds and greens are budget garbage, only good for rarely used storage.
Blues 1TB and smaller are quality, over 1TB they're slightly faster, less garbage greens.
Blacks have the speed advantage over blues when you've over 1TB and have vibration protection you will want if you plan to use it in a laptop.

I am having a problem with my PC and I have no idea how to troubleshoot it. If I leave it unattended it will turn off, but the mobo is still receiving power (fans and leds still on). No signal through HDMI and I cannot produce any software noise by mashing the keyboard so I think the OS is fully shut down.

Also when I restart there will again be no display but fans run. On the second reset the machine posts and boots normally.

I have heard this could be a PSU related issue but I have a PSU tester that says it is fine. Any ideas?

Last time I did it I did it without homegroup cause something wasn't working. If homegroup worked I wouldn't bother to run through ethernet.
Laptop is shit and has no working usb ports/disc drive, and something is up where the version of windows it's running isn't compatible with homegroups run on 8.1 and what not, or something like that. I don't remember the specifics.

I just remember last time I transferred my files, it worked rather simply and i'm not sure why it isn't this time.

the cpu and gpu are stable, I think it's a driver issue, ive tried 2 beta and 2 stable drivers and none have fixed the issues

I think I get it but can someone confirm if my I'm understanding this correctly?

I have an old USB 1.0 SD card reader, meaning at most it can transfer 12 Mbit/s. So it's going to bottleneck any modern day SD card? Like if I have an SD card with an advertised write speed of 40 Mb/s, I'll only get 12, right?

>>
>>54386309
No.

USB 1.0 limit is 1.5MB/s, modern SD cards are 40-80+MB/s.
Mb/s != MB/s.

It will bottleneck a lot, just buy a new one, shouldn't be more than $3.

Look at VB100 they list the best av there.
https://www.virusbulletin.com/testing/vb100/
>>
>>54386679
thanks. So if I'm understanding this correctly NOW, USB 2.0 caps at 60 MB/s so if I have a card with 80 MB/s advertised read speed, it would cap out at 60 right? So I shouldn't settle for anything less than USB 3.0, yeah?
>>
>>54386739
USB 2.0 should be enough for an adapter.

For what do you want to use the SD for that you want fast speeds while using an adapter?
>>
>>54386775
it just feels like a waste if I can't get the most out of the card if I absolutely needed to
>>
>>54386821
Well adapters are pretty much to just transfer files, not really to use them at full speed, you will have to search for a good one for what you want it for, sorry i cant help you selecting one.

You still need to have in mind that the USB controllers of the adapters affect speed too.
Example, i have a cheap $1 that works max at 20MB/s because the shitty controller.

AFAIK you can just keep pressing "no"/"ignore"/"postpone" or even write yourself a script to do so
>>
I hope this is stupid enough.

My tp-link modem(?) wireless is giving me 1mb, normally it would give me 10mb, if I connect the ethernet directly to my company's device it gives me the 10mb I used to get, but it gives me 1mb if I connect the ethernet from the tp-link thing, I did everything in the FAQ with no results, the last step on it was to reset to the factory defaults, so that's what I've atm.

What can I do to fix this?

My computer's drivers are up to date and the internet speed is the same lame 1mb on my cellphone and tablet.

It's a TL-WR740N ver 4.

Say I write a program 1/3 each in C, pearl and pyhton or whatever. As long as each piece is compiled correctly in the end the computer still sees it all as 0's and 1's.

Further to that, why do I often see people talking about developing their piece of software and they say X amount was written in one language, some was written in this one.

So I've tried to change the boot order. currently boots C on the SSD, changed to the partitioned HDD D and that's when I get the problem.

I've gone in through disk management, but when I click on the partition I can't mark it active.

I've not installed grub loader. I've just done a install selecting the 'something else' option. I'm not installing alongside in dual boot, i'm trying to make the D boot from elementary when it is above C in the bios boot list.
>>
>>54388458
you need a boot loader to boot an OS.
Windows has its own boot loader, but you need to add something for Linux. That's usually GRUB.

However, if you REALLY wanna do Linux without a bootloader, here's a slideshow on how. Apparently it's not too difficult, you just need hardware-specific Assembly Language code, and you're good to go!
(install GRUB, ffs; I mean, really...)

So on the C drive, windows has it's own boot loader. On the D drive I've installed Elementary with a swap partition and then created the Os in the remaining space.

How has it not installed a boot loader? Doesn't that happen as part of install?

I've checked the integrity of the download and the disk image as per the site.

If your computer is using DDR2 you should upgrade anyway.
