Honestly, it is the best Distro if you're going to rice. The supurb package manager allows you to mindlessly install bloat, and the wiki tells you litterly everything so you don't have to think for yourself. Only problem is that occasionally pacman breaks SOMETHING. Arch is only good if you maintain the KISS policy and don't install too much bloat.

>>
>>54352857
Didn't make the thread but this behaviour appeals to me because it's a perfect example of what not do to. It's hilarious how the average arch user is basically a real life cartoon character, but it's computer related. I used to wonder as a kid how people get like this, ie really smart but so morbidly, catatonically bitter that no matter how great they are at something nobody will ever ever ever want to work with them because they are the biggest autists ever. I've read greek tragedies where a fictional character shot himself in the foot less. Just like every extremist in any field they go much too far with it and it's all just a game on who is the biggest loser and they take technology backwards by a factor of 30 years thinking that thousands of people are seeing their obscure terminal software setup that they spent months on trying to differentiate it from ubuntu users who got the same shit in 15 minutes but nobody fucking cares. Get the same hilarity from slackware and gentoo. The difference between technology autists from losers in other fields is that the scale is so much larger - they had to train for years to dropout and do this, train themselves to hate everything and everyone. Gun fucks and the retarded anti-car mechanics are losers but they eventually find some retarded group to fit in. Arch users and any extreme tech faggot anti-group are just so, so, so fucked on a whole extra level, every opportunity that comes their way is going to be pushed away as hard as possible for the most hyper-nitpick psuedo reasons and I can't get enough of watching it happen.

Don't you mean Ubuntu is the cancer that drives people away from Linux?

As far as distros go Arch has provided me with the most stable and logical experience. Ubuntu and Debian have given me nothing but pain coming from a background with Arch, everything eats a dick and dies if you try to do anything, but especially if you touch a config file because there's no options in the disgusting gimped GUI.
I've recently started working on a site with a friend and we've spent two whole days trying to get php and mysql running on an AWS Ubuntu box, and my friend's a professional sysadmin. Things that work OOTB on Arch just weren't happening on Debian or Ubuntu, and I mean I'd follow their guides if there was any, Arch seems to be the only documented distro.
I think it's the gimped cluster fuck OSes like Ubuntu and Debian that force you to go to blog posts for documentation that give people a bad image of Linux, not Arch.
Also the AUR, ABS and pacman are godly, everything is simple and easy if you've got half a brain.

Okay, but regardless, what's with people pushing the idea that Ubuntu is bloated? Fucking hell, just convert it to Xubuntu and then remove Unity and its dependencies, and you're done.
Also it will be a lot faster. I have a Centrino laptop that runs Xubuntu and XP SP3 in dual boot (I use XP SP3 for programming PIC chips and reflashing USB drives through AlcorMP)

It's like you never used it. It automatically retrieves its repository, unlike Arch.

People that use Arch think they're h4xx0rz just because they think pacman is so advanced (it really isn't,instead it's fucking retarded) and that using Arch makes them so important in public. Please, get out of the Internet, your kind doesn't even belong here. Also,Arch needs to be constantly updated, while Debian and its derivatives (Ubuntu and such) don't need that.

Wintard here- been on the botnet all my life.

You didn't even fucking try? Nigger I don't even consider myself computer literate and even I managed to get it installed on the second try with the help of the wiki. It's not THE hardest thing in the world.

Though, that said, I do like my installers. After the third time of restarting the install on my VM, I gave up and installed Debian and had it working much faster.

Arch would be much nicer if it came with a default installer, for sure. But that's unlikely to happen. Too much bloat on the ISO!

"Rolling Release" means there's not fucky versions and you just update shit when you feel

>>54353908
>It automatically retrieves its repository
What are you even on about?
pacman caches repos to save time, if you wanna update you just run pacman -Sy, makes a lot of sense to me
If you want to download a package and "retrieves repo" then just
pacman -Sy i3 or whatever

>pacman is so advanced
We never said that, it's an extremely well written and flexible tool that works a dream
I bet you've never built a package
On Arch you're a wiki page a way and everything's logical and easy, took me 20 min first time to build packages for my software, my server system at home has it's own repo and writing package builds takes seconds
Debian's just a cluster fuck time sink that has you hopping from blog post to blog post with no official sources to speak of (when I tried)
I gave up after two hours

This story probably doesn't describe actual Arch users, but maybe someone here will find it entertaining. Apparently somebody "recruited" my brother.

He's the first person I've met in real life who wanted to use Arch, and his logic was "Linux is about programming it yourself!" despite knowing no programming languages. This is just him a decade after his "I'm going to make an MMORPG!" that lead to nothing, not even an education in programming. He once tried to convince me he was going to learn how to hack people's facebook accounts with the VIEW PAGE SOURCE button on Firefox. I remember he just made a hand jester showing me a page of the text saying he was "going to learn all that!" (Protip: He didn't.) He was also the last person in my direct family to stop using Internet Explorer, thinking everyone in our family were just being edgy about "hating Microsoft products." (Because buying their shitty Consoles and using their operating system and not their single-tab browser was being a hater.)

I haven't heard anything about his Arch Linux experience, but I assume it hasn't happened because he got money back in taxes and immediately bought a gaming PC and a light up USB mousepad. Then he needed money, and quit his job and threw a tantrum in the restaurant he washes dishes in. I'm never going anywhere in life either, but I still feel smug knowing he has so many fucking kids that he's never going to be able to both support his family and learn any programming languages on minimum wage.

Do Arch users have shitheads like this on their forums? I can't tell if Arch users go around trying to convince people who aren't tech savvy at all to try Arch Linux or if the buzzwords like "bleeding edge" attract retards. Ubuntu seems to always have some asshats making threads and then getting upset that nobody responded within an hour solving their issue as if though everyone who posts is getting paid money to work tech support.

All I can tell you is that, believe it or not, there is a real world outside of 4chan and /g/, and these weird, idiotic stereotypes you people keep propping up don't actually exist. They just don't.

If someone sees you using your distro of choice on a laptop in public somewhere, some fat fedora-clad neckbeard isn't going to jump out of the shadows at you and scream "Install Gentoo!" while waving around his FSF sticker covered Thinkpad.

There isn't some pasty lardass cabal of Arch users who won't deign to talk to you just because they see you're using something other than Arch.

I use Arch, and have never met anyone who gave a single fuck, fellow Arch user or not. If nothing else, they were just interested in meeting another Linux user. Yeah, some of them were overweight and more than a little pale. Some of them were pretty fit people with careers in IT or related fields. None of them were some bizarre stereotype cooked up on places like /g/ so little kids can have a strawman to prop up for their pointless, tribal "OS wars" bullshit.

It's not socially acceptable to call you a faggot irl. That's why we have the Internet. Now kill yourself
>>
>>54359362
Yeah, and more to the point, there's a whole Internet outside of places like 4chan and /g/. An Internet where "kys faggot le le le le xD" and "kek install gentoo!" aren't the norm.

I also get the impression that whether or not something is socially acceptable IRL is the least of your worries. Rather, calling someone a faggot IRL is liable to get your ass beat to a pulp, so I imagine that's the actual deterrent and not some respect for social graces.

As an aside, if you're too much of a coward to say anything to anyone IRL then why do you matter at all? At that point, you're not even a stereotype. You're just a nobody.

Yeah, install goodies.

XFCE can best be described as MATE, but... you know... with a point?

XFCE and gnome2 ran neck and neck for years before gnome3/shell hit the scene, one always being the lighter version of the other.

Since then, XFCE has incorporated a lot of the features of gnome2/MATE and in my opinion, replaced it.

XFCE is fucking awesome, and the next version will have gtk3 support finally!

Thank you! Oh, btw. When using XFCE at least for now, only gtk2 themes will work until 4.14 is released.

My favorite setup is either 4dyne(a xfce port of the dyne theme for openbox) and/or the numix theme suite with faenza for the icon suite.

out of the box::
text editor - mousepad
file manager - thunar
archive manager - xarchiver or squeeze
terminal - xfce4-terminal
calendar/time - orage
network manager - no default!!! use wicd-gtk or gnome's network manager

Oh, and use compton for compositing.

Thanks, will keep this in mind. About the GTK2 themes: I don't quite follow. What about applications that use GTK3? Wouldn't they rely on the GTK 3.0 theme settings? Or do you mean the desktop environment in general only supports GTK2 themes currently -- but applications that natively use GTK3 work with it of course?

Sidux was the shit.

Also even on my old shitty desktop it installed in under 4 minutes. I've never had a full OS install that ridiculously fast.

Other than aptosid there is also siduction but its just not the same and the community seems dead. Sidux used to have fairly active forums...

I miss it.

Reposting this:

"After every Arch update, something happens to my programs and they stop working. I then have to google and search for hours and sometimes days just to fix something that the Arch update changed.

There will be very few people on this planet who actually enjoy, has the time or will want to put up with that kind of crap.

It took me well over a month just to learn how to use it, coming to Linux from scratch. I still can't wrap my head around it. Why do I have to be connected to the internet just to be able to function with this OS at all? Why is it that if I don't update regularly things will break? What If I have a 3 month holiday? I don't want to freaking reinstall the whole thing all over again.

It's also SLOWER than my windows 7. Yes, SLOWER. My Arch install has no GUI at all and Windows 7 does. Explain that? I came to Arch expecting everything to be freaking instant because it needs no GUI or resources. Lies, it's bloody slower. I've tested it. Open a picture or video on my windows machine, or a game. Instant. Open browser? Instant. Arch... waiting for 3 seconds.

I thought I loved technology, after using Arch I'm just not so sure anymore. I've always hated programming and looking at tedious walls of text and problem solving. That's all it really is at the end of the day. I like using a completed a final product to do what I want to do.

I'm not an expert on fonts or what looks good for an interface for the OS. I don't freaking know what colors fonts should be. There's too much crap to think about. Stuff like font I just want an acceptable default...

Freaking hate Arch..."

Arch users are usually professionals, so it makes sense that they'd own 40 BMW's.

Might be a little tough to open up that image without a GUI.

I've actually had more broken Ubuntu packages than Arch packages. I've had to troubleshoot a couple AUR packages but I like pacman a lot more than apt-get. The install is a bit of a process, but once everything is running smoothly it's golden.

I even have grub configured to dual boot with Win7, which is only for gaymen and testing bullshit for shitty support job. Am I some strange outlier? I told my coworker I run Arch as my standard distro and he looked at me like I'm an evil wizard.
