Why did VR fail despite years of hype?
>>
Lack of good, platform specific content? Idk, it really has the same value as a paperweight if there's nothing fun to do with it.
>>
It hasn't failed, it has barely even been released
>>
Overpriced
>>
It's still not widely available despite years of hype. There's no special content for it which is important for any product launch.
>>
>Customers don't want to spend money on buying VR because barely any games/useful shit currently exist for it
>developers don't want to make investments developing games and software for hardware most people don't have
The ride never ends
>>
>>54286427
Damn that dude lucky he got found before he died

OP to answer your question, the only way that VR is ever going to be successful is if the hardware is cheap enough to not pose a significant barrier to entry once something with enough hype that requires it releases. An example would be like if Half-Life 3 released for VR (which is probably will given Gabes hardon for it), and the hardware was somewhere around 300 dollars. For that price, you could reasonably purchase the equipment for a single application, which gives the rest of the industry an install base to target.

For some crazy ass reason everyone decided that $500+ was the right way to go, even though that's obviously too high. I mean, just look at the Xbox 360 vs the PS3; the PS3 released at about $500, and because of that it took years to even approach the market share of the Xbox, which launched at a lower price. What makes it even more egregious is that the VR headsets can't even play the games themselves - you still need a (relatively) expensive gaming computer to make use of them.
>>
>>54286890
>$500
>too high
T. Pajeet. Everytime something new comes up, rich/stupid kids will buy it first. If it catches on, the factories will ramp up production and it becomes cheaper per unit. Then even cheaper knock offs will appear. That's where you come in, Pajeet, and do the needful.
>>
>>54286427
But all that stuff years ago was prototyping, it's just barely begun
I'm still not buying one within the next year, though
>>
>>54286614
>generic excuse number 1

>>54289665
>not understanding rich/stupid kids are what makes the demographic market share. Not understanding that if there is not synergy between price and parent there is no market, and takes forever to become cheap
>>
Are you the same faggots that were laughing at 1st gen Tesla?
>>
>vr failed
nice meme. you're legit retarded if you don't realize this is just the beginning of vr. we are in the commodore 64 days of this technology, and it holds a shit load of potential.
at this point, it's pretty lame. but you have to be a nigger to not see that this is where the world is heading.
i don't blame the companies for putting mediocre and expensive products out there on the market. they need to start somehow.
>>
>>54286427
It hasn't failed yet, it has practical applications in day trading and other businesses that require several monitors.

>>
>>54290968
I ordered a vive earlier this week and I still think this is retarded.
At least this point, the resolution isn't there yet.
>>
Because VR and 3D are recurring memes which get bought by idiots and then die. Only going to look at shit like that if any product made it for five years regarding new/improving content and support
>>
>>54291195
It's more than a meme this time. They've got more than fickle consumerist dipshits on the hook.
>>
>>54286427

This is my biggest phobia. I study abroad and live alone in an appartement, I'm also in an internship not in the same city my friends at school are. Basically if some shit like falling on a hard corner causing bleeding on my head + inconsiousness, I'm fucked. Co-workers don't know where I live, family has to fly here etc...

>>

Just don't choke yourself like a fucking redditor and you'll be fine.
>>
>>54291215
Just wait 2-3 years and VR will be as popular as 3D without glasses is now. 3D without glasses will be the new exciting shit. Repeat until everyone gets an implant to stream porn right to their brains.

This has nothing to do with vr.

How is that an excuse? It's a new technology still being developed and descending into affordability - it hasn't necessarily failed or succeeded yet.
>>
>>54286427
>Why did VR fail despite years of hype?
VR failed? Looks sold out for months to come. I'm *still* waiting to be able to order one.
>>
It didn't fail. Just nothing that makes it worth buying for the average person, so far only guys like the one in OP who buys it for VR porn.

Because Apple aren't in the game yet. Now that iPhone sales are dropping, it's only a matter of time until iVR. You pay for 'experiences' in a closed environment.

>>
>>54286427
Who the fuck actually believes this post?

Who took the picture of him on the floor and why would he post it along with admitting that he tried to choke himself to feel sexual pleasure?
>>
When will I be able to get cheap, but decent, vr to play rollercoaster simulator while high.
>>
Because you need 4K for a decent experience and hardware to drive it. Even for the current headsets, remember the 970 is a MINIMUM requirement. Also the gear costs 800 € which is too expensive for mainstream, considering there aren't much games for it.

I had the DK2 myself, its nice but still needs work.
>>
>>54286427
Personally because I'm too lazy to turn my head around while in VR (also kinda feel like an idiot) and I feel I'm losing some of the experience if I don't continuously look around.
Flat monitors that fit in my field of view are better
>>
>>54286427
Did you expect tons of people to come out and buy $600 VR equipment right off the bat... especially when there's no must play titles for it at the current time?

Everyone's waiting for those GOTY titles and massive price drop. I sure as hell ain't paying $600 bucks for VR. Maybe $400... and that's the exact launch price for the Sony Playstation VR.

You can use the Vive seated down too except still get better tracking and also the ability to point at virtual objects without neck strain

>>54300042
Are the lighthouse things and open space necessary to use it sitting down? I have a small office space sized room and I can't clear out shit, bolt things to a wall, and run chords across the ceiling just so I can use an hmd in a chair

3D tv's had no content or uses outside of tv/ movies though.
Wasn't the only real content some movies and sports?
Who gives a shit about those things?
VR can be used for more than that.
>>
>>54300123
So you still have to use those light boxes and piss Wii controllers, I would probably get a vive if they had an option without those but I'm good without ;)

if the gimickshit 3d managed to make its way this far then the vive which actually has value will do well imo
>>
>>54286427
what are you on about
the hype train hasn't even reached the station yet
plus this round actually has some use for professional applications like CAD and simulation rather than a novelty for gamertards or academics
>>
>>54286427

It JUST came out so it's...

overpriced and has little content.

It's exactly why 1080 resolution failed, because no games ever took advantage of that kind of visual fidelity and PCs are just way too underpowered to push those pixels.

Oh wait...
>>
I'm out of the loop here. I thought Oculus is the most hyped shit back then?

Now everyone says that Oculus is crap and Vive is the shit.

What's with the Vive?
>>
>>54286826
dude if I wasn't a fucking poor chemistry Student, I would already bought the vive and locker myself inside Googles Tilt brush
>>
>>54302096

And I think we both know it
>>
>>54299485
It's not the majority. It's just a dedicated number of shitposters who know that a lot of idiots will get pissed off if they talk shit about their favorite new tech.
I suspect that many of them are from /v/.
>>
>>54302127
Both of the headsets are great from a technical standpoint. The current problem is that they're expensive, Facebook is jewing backers (prioritizing selling stuff to Amazon etc. while the backers are still waiting for their stuff), and (most importantly) there's almost no support from game devs. Due to Steam Greenlight there is a ton of shit tier indie tech demo "games" that costs like $40 so you can play in a virtual sandbox and move some legos around.
>>
>>54302147
Porn will drive VR just like it did for blue ray
>>
>>54302127
Oculus gave a false impression of price, people were expecting $450 at the most, it was $600.
Oculus is shipping slow and retail stores are getting their bundle units before people who preordered
some QC issues

Vive is doing pretty well on shipping, never gave a price for people to mislead themselves with, and doesn't seem to be having too many QC issues that I can tell.
Wrist straps for the wands are shit though, if you get the vive swap them for something better.
Like wiimote straps (Which are backordered until late june because people bought them all for their vives yesterday)

with traditional 2d media you can sit down and relax. With VR you have to look about, move about, all sorts of stupid shit. Lots of people work all day and exercise at a real gym with weights / cardio already and dont want to do more exercise. This is DOA
>>
I love when /g/ code monkeys try to comment on new tech experiences. Uxer here who's done work in VR for e-commerce. You guys are idiots

Friday and today I tried vive dev kit and it is amazing. will definitely buy it if there will be enough content to justify it.

good sides

lots of guys tried it on our company and there is no sickness. immersion is amazing, a guy actually almost fell because he tried to lay onto an imaginary table (the table at valve lab, he tried to grab something far).

I believe the actual product will have higher resolution, even currently it is not that bad.

When you approach boundaries of your room, it warns you with force fields, it is quite easy to learn limits.

bad sides

cables, there are lots of cables. with longer cables I think it would be better but it is still a problem.

lack of content.

the controllers drain batteries quite fast.

software is not that great, some times controller goes offline for no reason. some games does not work correctly. sometimes it forces you to restart steam, once we had to restart computer.

you will need some empty space and will need to attach two cameras on your walls.
