If your calculator has an equal key, it's shit.
If your calculator requires scratchpaper to arrive at an answer, it's shit.
If your calculator manufacturer actively prevents users from programming their devices, it's shit.
If your calculator requires you to spoon feed it the order of operations with nested parentheses, it's shit.

Why aren't you part of the RPN master race, /g/?

RPN? That's like #5 on the list of hipster bullshit that /g/ kiddies discover and desperately try to lord over others.

You're delusional. You may have a good reason to choose a RPN calculator. But you probably don't. You probably tote a RPN calculator the same way you wear a fedora. The same way to blow massive clouds with your vape pen. The same way you're superior because you know C, even though your classmates have made much more useful software in some 'lesser' language.

Oh, and I forgot vim.

It doesn't change the fact that if you don't know how to do it having the fucking textbook open in front of you is not going to help you during the exam/test or any kind of timed assessment.
>>
>>54242353
It depends, if the person is a retard and haven't one minute to the exam then of course it won't do shit. If you have like a 50%-70% knowledge than a textbook whit good examples can help a lot

What kind of exam do you have, that they are afraid of cheating? You should have this kind of exercise on exam that even notebooks with internet will not help you solve in give time.

You know how to solve it or you do not. Only way you could cheat is allow you to make pic and sent it to somebody with more knowledge.

calc are not allowed only on meme introduction to calculus and linear algebra where you have to prove that you know how to solve it manually.

Keystroke programming alone makes RPN useful for engineers. Being able to quickly input operations into the calculator and then create a program without any boilerplate or hassle is essential because of all the repetitive calculations engineers have to do. Say I was calculating the equivalent resistance of a resistor network: Series resistors is simply adding, but parallel resistances are a pain. Using the 50g, we can quickly throw a program on the stack in the same way we'd solve the problem normally: << INV SWAP INV + INV >> We can then store this into a variable, and use it with a soft key or even assign it to a key ourselves. Writing something like that on the ti89 would require opening the program "app", having boiler plate, and really calling the program would be so slow it would be easier just to input the calculations on their own. With RPN the program essentially behaves like a built in operator: We can solve resistor network by pressing one button for every resistor added to the network: 50 100 + 30 PRL 20 + 30 20 + PRL.

I just don't understand what your problem is with a tool historically used in engineering being discussed on an engineering centric board?
Or to put it more accurately, a piece of technology being discussed on a technology board?

By the way, nobody buys calculators like these if they don't have a use for them. It just doesn't happen, There isn't a point.

Way too much of that shit went on in my school.

Why is RPN so expensive?

It's literally a dumb calculator that can't parse algebraic expressions like modern calcs, why does it cost more?

I absolutely love this calculator. Just because its functionality makes things far easier than doing them by hand or on some manual shit like a TI-83 doesn't mean you don't understand math; I just don't want to manually adjust my window bounds or recalculate LSRL each time I make a change to a scatterplot.

The GUI on that thing is super laggy. The only thing I like about it is that it does algebra on matrixes with complex number elements.

And the dpad is mushy and the cursor sensitivity is fucked.
>>
>>54242192
During my final year of high school, the school started wiping the TI-84s of everyone whenever there was a maths test. It was annoying as fuck, because even simple stuff like quadratic formula solvers was wiped. Worse, you weren't allowed to use a graphic calculator for physics and chemistry tests at all, out of fear of students putting formulas in their calculators. The kicker was that you were allowed to use a reference book with general information and formulas for those tests.

>>
>>54280044
are you just being a hipster or is there any, ANY benefit to serial port?
>>
>>54280159
For this price it was certainly one of the best buys you have made.
>>
>>54280121
No nostalgia, just because it's simpler than USB. It's a calculator, it's not like I need USB2 or 3 speeds, RS-232 is a better choice.
>>
>>54280192
that's stupid.
I'm not even trying to insult your way of thinking, honestly.

Virtually 99% of devices today comply to USB standard. It's THE standard. Why would you prefer a device to use an outdated communication interface that is considered obsolete today compared to a widely accepted and used one?
>>
>>54280268
I can DIY devices with RS-232 far easier than USB. It's not stupid, it's fact. USB is more complex. Yes USB ports are abundant, but so is RS-232. If I can choose either, I'll choose the one that's easier to work with, and that's RS-232. It's not like I can't still use my computer's USB port to connect to the calculator.
>>
>>54280310
so...pointless backwards compatibility?
the thing is, RS-232 is pretty much non-existant on modern hardware. It's not going to make a comeback because it got replaced by superior solutions.
>>
>>54280349
You keep ignoring the DIY part. USB's a bitch.
>>
>>54280268
Because calculators are _stupid_ compared to most modern systems. A USB port will be too much for it and it will raise their already ridiculous high cost even more. (Though USB is generally cheaper than serial.)
>>
>>54259702
I added a bunch of stack commands, how about now?
>>
>>54280349
not original anon here but the ports being antiquated doesn't mean you lose support.

All the arduino-tier uCs use RS232 over USB, they are not sending USB frames to and from your PC over that cable.

Also, it's still the preferred method to talk to/program FPGAs, RF devices, and so on.

Talking about the standard here, not the cable and jacks (which are huge, old, and rarely used). It is much more difficult to put USB on an embedded board or even an emulated uP on fabric, and you need to maintain a characteristic impedance between lines which RS232 does not require (use any bare wires or cable)
>>
>>54280393
well, seeing how TI monopolized the high-end calculator market, it's not really a surprise. They can hold it back however they want to and major universities will still require their students to get TI products
>>
>>54280369
This, USB will never ever replace the humble serial port.

I can hook any computer with a serial port up to any ham radio ever made, new radios always come with one even now because hams are geek hobbyists.
>>
>>54280393
>compared to most modern systems
The HP-50g has basically as many functions as Maple or Mathematica or Derive.
>>
Because I pay a mathematician $300k starting to calculate for me.
>>
The sad truth of the matter is that the kind of person who doesn't get why a device has a serial port won't ever need one, so it's pointless to argue with such a sad case, especially on a technology board.
