Too many vintage watches to list. It's too bad mineral glass became more popular than acrylic, mineral glass is by far my least favorite option between acrylic, glass, and sapphire.

I actually sold it several moths ago, it's a nice looking watch but it wasn't for me. I never paid too much attention to the accuracy but it wasn't great, probably gained like 15 to 30 seconds a day.

What are some good minimalist mechanicals? Ideally, hand-wound, but automatic is fine too.

Turbo watch retard here. Last watch I owned came in a cereal box.

Looking at:

It's pretty silly to whine about ETA movements, anon. They may not be as exciting as whatever bespoke grail movement you're wanking to, but they are reliable, keep good time, are easy to work on, have tremendous parts availability, and come in a range of fit/finish levels suitable to both entry level and mid-tier luxury watches.

>b-but muh inhouse

Yes, it's pretty neat to have a unique movement.
But for the most part, even in-house movements are still just a re-arranging of the same basic components found in an ETA movement.

There are exceptions - interesting escapement designs and amazing complications - but these come with drawbacks. Staggering expense being the most obvious, with actual maintenance of the watch being a more troubling question in the long term. It's not all that common for people to actually wear their astonishing hypermegatourbillion - these are often purchased as investments and sit in a safe with an unwound mainspring for years or decades at a time.

TLDR It's okay for people to enjoy owning a mechanical watch even if their movement wasn't hand-milled by Robert Hooke's ghost out of a solid billet of Epeenium.

>i am a college student, not a 40yo father of 3 whiny faggots

Yes in the sense that only a 40yo father would have the savings to afford a $1500 watch.

No in the sense is styling.
>>
>>54223683
i wouldn't feel comfortable spending much more than that on a watch, honestly

the versatile design is nice and it's also relatively bang-for-buck
>>
>>54223829
If you like it, and you're comfortable dropping that much on a watch as a college student, then go right ahead.

Don't expect complements on it around campus though, as Sinn is not exactly a high street name, or one that many people who don't have an interest in watches will have heard of. So people will assume you got it for $50 at Wallmart or something.
>>
>>54223052
I wouldn't mind Swiss watches with ETA movements if the people selling them correspondingly marketed them as reliable, no-nonsense workhorses with a bit of style, much like what Seiko does and has always done with their mechanicals.

What pisses me off about a lot of shit with ETA movements is that they are marketed as special snowflake luxury items with a markup way beyond what the case or movement are worth, all because mid-level managers who don't have a clue what they're doing are willing to blow their hard-earned money on a fairly standard mechanical watch that should cost half as much, but doesn't, because people think they're joining the haute horologie club with a 2824.
>>
>>54223052

Because economics.

It's really simple. To an adult male with a decent-ish job, the difference between $500 and $3000 is not terribly meaningful. Once you are past the poorfag student phase, unless your life has been fucked up horribly somehow (kids, drugs, debt, etc) it's just not all that much money. You'll spend the extra money to get a slightly nicer case and a slightly more prestigious logo and be happy with your purchase.

The real question is: why does this make you so butthurt?

a comma denotes a pause where as a period is a full stop in a sentence. Why would you use comma to separate the whole and decimal part and period to break apart the whole part? It is completely unnatural.

The comma is the most common list delimiter and using it to separate the whole and decimal (decimal, as in decimal POINT) makes it impractical (1,5, 2,6, 2,5, 3,5)

This also applies in sentences as well making it difficult to write lists of numbers

How can you not see that it is unnatural and intuitive if you speak any latin based language or use any arabic number system?

Those are two different watches. You mean the Seagull or the Omega? I'm guessing the Seagull. It's a nice looking watch and a good way to get a neat mechanical chrono movement for cheap, but it's notoriously unreliable and kind of delicate. Also it has some legitimately interesting history behind it being a remake of a pilot watch for the Chinese air force and the movement also has an interesting story. I thought it was kind of a pain in the ass because it's not waterproof at all and pretty delicate. Also it looks nice but I always felt sort of weird wearing it because it's pretty thick and it makes you look like a communist.

I guess I recommend it if you want a neat little watch you can wear every once in a while. If you want a reliable everyday sort of watch you can wear all the time then I wouldn't recommend it.

Also make sure you get the 38mm acrylic version and get some polywatch so you can regularly polish the crystal to keep it looking nice. The 42mm version looks like shit and the sapphire version has a really awful looking bezel because the sapphire crystal isn't properly domed like the acrylic is.
>>
>>54224099
This is rubbish on so many levels. It's basically the same as saying "adults with decent - ish jobs will not negotiate on new cars because the difference between $31,000 and $33,500 is hardly meaningful". Nobody with any brains or any idea of the true value of an article pays more than they absolutely have to. Even the rich motherfuckers I work for nickel and dime everyone to death. THAT is simple economics, but if course it assumes consumer rationality.

The fact that so many of these mid-market ETA-derived watches depreciate down to 60% of their value as soon as you walk out of the jewellers tells me something about their value.

Yeah, I do mean the Seagull. And the whole looking like a Communist thing does sort of put me off it aswell. Also, how delicate is it? Do I have to worry about tapping it off a table accidentally?

If I do get it, I'll definitely make sure I'll follow your guidance, it's appreciated.

I suppose, the only things that I'm worrying about is looking like a Commie and it breaking on me :/ Do you know of any other watches that look similar and may be better?

Cheers.

>>

Good, you'll get enjoy it when you're older.
>>
>>54226494
I obviously don't have any statistics or anything but I think most of the problems with the movement seem to be from shitty halfassed Chinese quality control. So if you have a problem it'll probably arise early and hopefully you bought from a good seller who will replace it. I think if you don't have any problems initially then it'll probably be a good movement that will last. It's probably not going to just fall apart if you look at it the wrong way or anything.

There's other watches from other brands that use the same Seagull ST-19 movement, for example Alpha makes some Rolex Daytona ripoffs which seem pretty popular. There's not many other options for cheap mechanical chronos, but if you're OK with quartz then Seiko makes like a million options in the same price range plus a bunch of microbrands using the same Seiko quartz and meca-quartz movements.
>>
>>54224197

Thanks for the alternatives, I don't really know a lot about the technicalities of watches, but all I know is that I really do like the look of that Seagull. Also, do you recommend anywhere in particular to buy the Seagull from?

my grandfather had a dozen watches iirc 7 of them HMTs too, he had cancer and gave them away to his friends to remember him by when they came to visit him while he was on his deathbead he gave me his final two ,this Seiko and the Swarna(HMT).

Take it to a jeweller or watch maker, they will contact seiko and see if the part to fix in is still in stock, it won't cost much, it will just need a new circuit. However if they don't you will have to find a donor watch for one. I got one completely restored for $50 Australian

The poor finishing you see in the pic is dust. Tanaka has a bad habit of not wiping his watches down before photoshoots.
How is tough solar worse than having AUTOMATIC or ROLEXROLEXROLEX?
And finally this isn't an Oceanus and ana-digi is objectively the best way to add complications to a dial without cluttering it up.

Considering it was only a certificate to get my car registered and he took $50 off the regular price yeah, i guess it was.

Not sure what you're getting at. That statement is certainly true, though I make a very good living so the expense in and of itself isn't the issue. I just happen to like the way this watch looks, but know it isn't particularly exceptional in build functionality. I was looking for something that is similar, but maybe better designed. I also have a Bulova and a Movado I received as gifts if you want to shit on me some more.

Vintage Seikos are pretry fucking neat because they were all using something different. It seems these days all Seiko can offer you is a 7S26, a 7S26 with hacking, a 7S26 with hacking and handwinding, a 7S26 with hacking, handwinding and a power reserve that isn't shit, and then it jumps right to the Hi-Beats and the nippu nongu springu drivu.

Things were better when Daini and Suwa were rivals trying to outdo each other.

>GS looks with Sinn tier build.
It's a Casio - a nice watch but no means comparable to either GS or Sinn. Stop dreaming.

... I guess the gold blends in with the sand better?

I mean it's a digital casio, I assume you're going to use this thing for setting up an IED

The case and bracelet are TiC (9.5 hardness) and the movement is better than any quartz Seiko has ever made.
And they don't even try to jew you on the price.
What's not to love?

There's also someone making single tube watches. They put it on ebay whenever they have it finished. It's ruined by a blue LED under the tube.
