Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is it okay to put my x220t on my bedsheets? Will it overheat?
>>
Anybody running Libreboot on a X200 here know if using 1333mhz and 1600mhz ram is possible?
There is any specific reason why it is used 1066mhz RAM, or is is just because it was the way libreboot was compiled?

>>54159657
I think most notebooks will overheat on bedsheets
>>
>>54159657
as long as you dont block the back/left side it will be fine. My t420 only runs 5-7c warmer with bedposting use. I usually have it on a piece of wood though.

Start with an old cheap model as a test drive of sorts. Look past the obviously dated specs and technologies and see if the design and features appeal to you.
>>
>>54160479

>>
>>54160332
Depends on what you want from your laptop. /g/ likes them because they're widely available for not much money, due to businesses upgrading them, many models have good Linux support, they have nice keyboards, and they're pretty durable and repairable as far as laptops go. You can go online and get teardown guides, and people part them out and sell the bits on ebay often. They're also the opposite of Apple in terms of aesthetics.

Downsides, /g/ often uses older models (C2D or early i5/7 era), and they tend not to have powerful graphics. You might also want to pay attention to the screen you get, some are low-res. And with that repairability comes the fact that you might have to do some work on your copy to get it running how you want, it is used, after all.

So if that sounds like the kind of laptop you want, you'll probably like them.
>>

Get a generic chink one on the store of your choice. They all come with an assortment of barrel plugs. Match the voltage and make sure it has at least the amperage of the original, and it'll be fine.

>Actually trying to justify 1366x768
There's no excuse for it. There are 4k screens on laptops. There are 4k screens on phones. There were 1600x1200 screens on laptops 10 years ago. It would be like a modern system with a single-core CPU, even smartphones have better than that nowadays.

Someone should really specify that while the X series is included in the OP as offering the Real ThinkPad Experience™, that doesn't include the X1**e line. I've noticed way too many people lately saying that they bought one of those and how much it sucks. Use your brains, m8s. Used Thinkpads are good deals because they were expensive laptops back in their day that are dirt cheap now. The ones that were always dirt cheap are complete shit.

60 dollars for an x60 is hardly a deal if you live in the US of Freedom. You can routinely get x200 units, and sometimes x201 units for 60 dollars on eBay. Have fun with your 32 bit processor and 3gb of ram.

>>
I'm looking to get a ThinkPad. The one thing I've noticed is that the price is pretty high when compared to laptops with higher specs, for example in RAM, HDD capacity, GPU, screen resolution. is it really worth getting considering that I'm paying $300-500 more for the same specs?
>>
>>54163741
It's great for it. I initially bought it with the intention of installing a Linux distro and learning how to use it, rather than from a VM. I was also interested in taking it apart and self teaching myself the innards of a laptop. If it shat the bed, that was only 4 days tip money gone. Now it's my daily shitposting in cafes machine.

If you want a laptop for writing on the move, maybe an X220 or X230 is a good option too because of their size, but I would never not recommend the T's you mentioned either.

Need opinions on repurposing my x220T with smashed screen (pic related). Replacing the digitiser is not an option as it costs more than the machine is worth. Would you:

a) replace the LCD with a standard x220 panel, work mostly as normal but no tablet functionality and it will have no cover or bezel so will look ghetto as fuck

b) get an extra express-card NIC, install pfSense on it and use it as a router, no screen needed

c) stick an SSD or high-capacity 2.5" HDD in it, another SSD/HDD in the ultrabase instead of the DVD drive and use it as a basic headless server for something

Wat do. I already have a NAS.

Hi guys.

Just got myself a W700 with:

1920x1200 400nit screen
Core 2 Extreme X9100 CPU
6GB RAM
120GB SDD + 200GB HDD
nVidia Quadro FX2700M 512MB

for 280 USD. It is in mint condition as far as looks go, it was used as a desktop pc with external keyboard and shit.

Did I make a good deal?

That aside, the rubber coating on the lids are starting to peel, probably because of age. Is there an easy way to either remove it entirely, or stop any more from peeling? I heard if you just put a big vinyl sticker of it it that works, but I'd have to cut around the IBM logo, which sounds like a pain.

Got a chink 9 cell battery a couple of years ago. It lasted only an hour longer than the official 6 cell, and half a year ago it became unable to charge past 20% battery. It was also starting to open itself up, the glue melted or something.

Went back to the 6 cell and a month later bought an unused official 9 cell.

My advice is not to get 3rd party batteries. The official ones are worth the money for the battery life alone, even without the better build and longer lifespan before they go kaput.
>>
>>54166068
does it work to install the nvidia drivers on debian?, because I did try it the other day and it just broke, had to remove all the drivers then it worked again with the intel drivers

Utter bullshit. My T43 running lubuntu works absolutely fine for internet browsing it's no slower than my mid 2012 macbook pro

would the build quality on the w500 be noticeably better than the t420? Which would you choose for web browsing

that just means the modules work at 1066; it doesn't necessarily stop you from using faster ram; my X301 officially supports a maximum of DDR3 1066 but it works fine with Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600; didn't work with Corsair ram though

we are buying 20 of the new 7510 Precisions all specced up, they are fucking badass. tying them in with 4k production/broadcast racks that we started sending out recently. I've had a lot of experience with these "pro" laptops and many of them are total shit, All the old precision models are just awful, avoid the M6500's and M6600's at all costs. Last year we bought a fleet of Dell Latitude E6540's and they are awesome, so easy to maintain, rugged, don't get bitchy when you try to image them, and the specs are pretty boss. I tried desperately to get our CFO to sign off on a load of thinkpads but they just arent up to what we need them for unfortunately, their product line up seems kinda empty recently.

Anyone using the new precisions ? Specifically the 5510 or the 7510. Need some reviews or pointers to any annoying habits or quirks they have.

yes, if it weren't for the mad chase of "muh thin ultrabook" apple envy plaguing FUCKING BUSINESS laptops; every chance they get, they replace "runs cooler for a longer time and we don't need to do anything" with "let's slim it down, put an even smaller fan with insane RPM and cripple the battery even more... oops, time to shorten the key travel too"

Not him but I'm a long time BB Q10 user. Never had any BB phone before, I tried every smartphone ecosystem available in the past, from the HTC HD (windows phone 6), iPhone 4, HTC Desire and Lumia 520. While I had fun tinkering with android/iOS, I also grew tired of the endless entertainment and ADHD inducing cycle of update/root/cydia/apps which was terribly counterproductive and well it was also time to grow up.
But the most important thing for me was to finally try using a full physical keyboard with real haptic feedback on smartphone, the only answer I found was the BB Q10. And I can say it blew my mind. BB10 OS (with the BB Hub, not gimmicky multi-tasking) is a miracle of software and UI design. It helped me stay focused and productive while at the same time have an internet browser on the go and minimal amount of apps. The screen is a bit odd at first but it grew on me.
However
>current year
It's finally showing some limits (crappy camera compared to nowadays tech, it's become slow as it ages), I was really sad that BB isn't developing BB 10 OS any further, a real shame since it's a terribly underrated OS.

>what did you find the most useful in smartphones in your experience?
>also blogpost
I was still in college when I first had my first smartphone (HTC HD), it was boring at first thanks the business like OS (Win 6.5) it was shit entertainmentwise compared to my friends' boasting the new iPhone 3G, later on I flashed android on it (Froyo) and it opened a whole world of tinkering and timewasting stuff from compiling to snifiing packet, even made a (just customized an already custom made) custom rom.
Then I got myself an iPhone 4, the new fad/frenzy of hot and popular iPhone games and apps, and that's it, playing number one on the appstore flash games while taking a number two or while getting bored in class etc. First to tinker with it, first to grow tired of the planned obsolescence and same-software upgrades that followed suit 10 fold.
My first attempt to get out of the cycle was the Lumia 520 : cheap af, windows phone (?), and that's it. no-more-apps just phone, to call people, send mail and sms, take pictures and browse.
But it wasn't that great : bad specs, horrid UI (disgusting metro) and OS (updates made it crash frequently), camera with no flash, and the most terrible on-screen keyboard I ever used.
>As a response to all those problems I had with the Lumia I tried the Q10 and finally settled with the phone I always wanted.
