The 'evil beast' that has begun to release all of its development tools and frameworks completely open sourced under the MIT license.

Evil or not, .NET is becoming an amazing stack to work with.

>.NET is open source
>C# is open source
>Xamarin is open source
>Visual Studio Code (however, not the main Visual Studio) is open source
>Unity is going open source

Netbeans, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Canonical are joining the .NET Foundation.

.NET is to be included as a first class development platform on Red Had Enterprise Linux servers.

You can get RHEL on Azure now.

These are GOOD things for all developers, whether you like or hate Microsoft.

Do you know what the MIT license is?

All current releases of all of those things are free as in freedom. You can redistribute, modify, and use them at your leisure.

Their development pricing model is moving towards testing toolsets, cloud hosting, and support for those things, just like RHEL did so well, with a bit of AWS rolled in.

For example, Xamarin is now completely free. However, if you're a serious enterprise dev shop, you can pay for a service to test run your application across all known Android and iOS devices to see global performance, compatibility, and potential configuration issues.

Except it's not. They are only releasing the runtime and command line tools. Most of the IDE stuff is still proprietary.

Remember that just because they release this version under MIT doesn't mean that they have any obligation to release any further versions under the same license.

Microsoft are open sourcing to counter Apple's market gains in the developer market. Once they become the monopoly again they'll close off again. This is the exact same shit they pulled with MSN.

That's like the worst argument ever, any copyright holder doesn't have any obligation to release further versions under the same license, even under GPL.
>>
>>54151663
>Most of the IDE stuff is still proprietary.
The major components of Xamarin are free as in freedom, but Xamarin Tools are now a bundled free as in beer component within Visual Studio 2015.

>Remember that just because they release this version under MIT doesn't mean that they have any obligation to release any further versions under the same license.
What possible benefit would they attain by all of a sudden close-sourcing future revisions?

Someone would just fork that revision and go from there, and developers would tell the official track to fuck off.

>Microsoft are open sourcing to counter Apple's market gains in the developer market.
Absolutely true.

Description: MySQL database server (metapackage depending on the latest version)
This is an empty package that depends on the current "best" version of
mysql-server (currently mysql-server-5.7), as determined by the MySQL
maintainers. Install this package if in doubt about which MySQL version
you need. That will install the version recommended by the package
maintainers.
.
MySQL is a fast, stable and true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL database
server. SQL (Structured Query Language) is the most popular database query
language in the world. The main goals of MySQL are speed, robustness and
ease of use.

You get to choose if you want MariaDB or MySQL (honestly you're an idiot if you choose either, PostgreSQL is far superior).
>>
>>54150932
>100% scaling
That magnifier must be really handy
>>
>>54151828
oh really? is it drop in replacement like mariadb was for mysql?
>>
>>54151828
Also as you can see MySQL is supported officially in the main Ubuntu repos for 5 years while MariaDB is in Universe (that's a bit unfortunate, but an understandable business decision by Canonical)
>>
>>54151833
It's mostly ok, mate
>>
>>54151838
No, Postgres has been around for ~20 years and is just a more sane database. MySQL is only as popular as it is because a lot of people use PHP on the LAMP stack and don't actually try anything else.

http://www.postgresql.org/about/users/
https://www.quora.com/Who-uses-PostgreSQL

Postgres is very popular in the non-PHP web community. People that use Python, Ruby, Erlang, Haskell, OCaml, and superior languages tend to use Postgres. MySQL is for PHP programmers that never think for themselves and stick to the status quo and do what they're told.

i see. it does seem though that php has added an extension for it

i could probably make the php changes relatively easy to switch to this kind of pdo in my stack
>>

Yeah I highly recommend Postgres, but do your own research.

I hold them to a higher standard because Microsoft has a horrible record on open source

>>54151736
>What possible benefit would they attain by all of a sudden close-sourcing future revisions?
The most likely scenario is:

They get market share, make a huge patch with lots of cool and useful features then release that under a proprietary license.

The FOSS community is stuck with their old version and don't have the resources to compete.

>There is no reason for them to do this.
It's a standard market move. Once you market dominance you want to do everything you can to keep it. The tech industry does this by locking shit down.

>What are you even on about with MSN?
Back in the days AOL was king and Microsoft came out with this brand new shiny product called MSN which they promised would beinterconnectable with other services.

Once they got market share and toppled AOL, they not only didn't develop those interconnectability features, they actively shut out other services from connecting to it.
There is a reason why they are known as the evil company

i really appreciate your insight. i ran into a problem where after i restarted my machine the first time, i could no longer log into my database as apparently 'localhost is not allowed to connect'. i tried googling around, and i could get in with --skip-grant-tables, but im unable to make changes to the users with that on, and unable to connect with it off. so right now -skip-grant-tables is the only way for it to work as far as i know.

btw if its not obvious by now, im just a hobbyist...
>>
it actually doesn't work on both my machines.

i have a netbook with an intel atom n2600 with a gma3600 which is simply a reskinned power vr gpu similar to the gma500. so no driver for me on linux.

on my desktop i have a 1280*1024 sony lcd monitor which can't be detected and resolution gets stuck at max 1154*950 or something like that

on the other side on my mom's old core duo pentium acer it is a pleasure to use, laterar scroll on touchpad works and all fn keys are ready to use.
>>
Someone tell me if it still does that fucking stupid thing where if you go to the workspace view and then drag a window to a new workspace really fast the whole UI locks up

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostgreSQL#Prominent_users

What operating system are you running and how did you install PostgreSQL?

Generally when I install postgresql-server with apt I like to do something like this:

$ sudo su - postgres
$ psql
$ create role MY_UNIX_USERNAME with superuser login;

At that point, you should be able to simply type `psql` at the prompt on your normal Unix shell and get access to the Postgres comamnd line.

At the end of the day, the facts are that Microsoft is making lots of very important development tools free and open source.

You're just saying
>Well what if they do bad thing?

Look at the direction the company is going.

Look at where they make their money.

Making these tools as free and accessible as possible only helps them in the long run as they focus on cloud services in the Azure platform.

I understand your apprehension, but if you look at the market, the money, and the actual direction they're headed, you'd understand that what you're saying is simply not likely.

It really seems like you have a very rudimentary understanding of what Microsoft currently offers the enterprise-level client, which is leading to you shallow, knee-jerk outlook on their open-source initiative.

oh no sorry, i was having the problem with mariadb. you telling me that postgresql is better made me think i might be able to just switch to it and not have to fix the mariadb server, while praying the same problem doesnt happen again.

and i run the stack on windows. in fact the reason im in this thread was because i was waiting for the new ubuntu to come out for this to be my first foray into trying to get a linux server to work.

I have an 5870 which uses r600g which come installed by default on Ubuntu. Even then, if I wanted to use proprietary fglrx (which I've tried in 14.04 and it's the same shit), 16.04 doesn't support fglrx so the drivers I have are the only possible drivers.

Ubuntu MATE has 16.04 ISO but can you do an in place upgrade? I have always liked that Ubuntu has always been reliable at updating without having to do a clean installation.
>>
>>54152885
Plasma 5 is the only one I tolerate in principle, but refuse to use because it's so buggy/unpolished. Funnily enough, even though it was always called bloated, it's one of the fastest DEs out there (try it if you don't believe me, mostly because its QT / C++, instead of memescript, pyshit and whatever most DE now use).

Currently running Cinnamon but it's slow as shit (is it so hard to get constant 60fps on some fucking windows? Holy shit)
>>
>>54152944
this is why i dont use linux for the desktop, its a fucking abortion all the way through
>>
>>54152882
basically it comes down to personal preference, since all those different flavors only have different DEs.
XFCE and MATE are popular choices, both better suited for weaker computers
>>
>>54152944
>buggy
I'm running Plasma 5.6 and I can't think of a single bug that I've run into. I do agree that it's unpolished, but it's still way more polished than any other DE.
>>
Never change a running system. 14.04 with i3wm runs just fine.
>>
>>54153027
Haven't tried 5.6, but 5.5 would sometimes not start (after logging in it got stuck loading forever, so had to reboot), and often crash (doesn't REALLY affect usability because it is a 0.5 second freeze and after that you get the pop up saying Plasma has crashed and restarted, but like seriously?).

This was running open source radeon

Also in linux it's really common if you run gaymes, that the game will crash and you have literally no other way of closing it (because alt tab wont work) other than switching to another TTY and killing it from the TTY. For the average user this of course means he will have to restart the whole PC.
