Nvidia was only the to go option for gamers because of optimized drivers.
Of course the extra profit they had and market dominance translated into some hardware upgrades and quality here and there.. but sure competition is catching up.
And as a non gamer - I mainly look in low performance pet watt for my hardware right now.
I want to consume the least amount of energy and be able to do what I need to do.

Pretty much the same here. For desktops I want cool and quiet with lots of processing power (no need for a hot noisy gpu since I don't game). For laptops I want long battery life.

They're over priced and not user serviceable, but they are premium. I wouldn't have my rMBP if it wasn't a gift, but I don't have many complaints about it either. It has a really solid build quality/materials, great screen, and performs decently.

I am excited to hear that AMD's new cards are expected to be highly competitive, but "AMD won because of Macs" is a silly argument. The _current_ Macs already have AMD GPUs, and AMD certainly is not currently "winning".

I haven't been spoiled by having the opportunity to use a lot of other laptops to compare it to, but I quite like the keyboard. Same with the screen. And I don't do much gaming in it (it's clearly not designed for it), but fan noise is more of a problem than heat. I can put it on my lap and it doesn't hurt at all.

The mid 2015 Macbook Pro has the dedicated option for AMD Radeon R9 M370X
They've been going for dedicated Intel graphics in their lower priced laptops though
Before that the early and late 2011 15' Macbook Pros had the option for a 6750M or 6770M

I do run most games at 1440x900, that isn't what I was saying though. I was saying that 2880x1800 is so hard to push that I doubt the newest gen rMBPs with Polaris GPUs could push them unless you're using really low settings.

Well newer mobile GPUs are pretty damn powerful.
For example the 980m, which is on par with the desktop 780.
If these new mobile cards are faster than what Nvidia offers or even on par with them, then you're looking at pretty beefy laptops.
Those resolutions shouldn't be a problem.
