So, my LiveWire power strip was making a rattling noise so I took it apart and I found what was making the noise: a rectangular piece of translucent yellow plastic.

Anybody know what the purpose of this is, or if it would hurt anything if I removed it?

Also, is there any benefit to EMI shielding the housing of the power strip with copper shielding tape or is that just dumb?

unless you're using a stupid password, there's no chance of that especially if you're using a key file along with your password. change it regularly. and keep all 3 separate (password, database, key file)

I've only owned a cheap smart phone 100000 years ago and never used it for anything 'smart', I currently have a dumb phone.
I'm looking to get a cheap smart phone on the utilitarian side. So I can figure out how much use I can get out of one in my day-to-day life. So I can figure out if high end phones are a meme or not.
I really don't know what to look for in a s-phone and would appreciate a few pointers to what I should look for in a phone and perhaps a model that fits my poorly described needs.
I have literally no idea what the fuck the market is.

How do people get caught for piracy? Do they send a letter or do police come in your home and take your computer away?
>>
>>54123301
A DMCA agent infiltrates public trackers, when they do, they can see the IP addresses. If they are legit adresses and not VPNs they will contact the ISP with a complaint which will then send you a letter of cease and desist. Failure to comply will terminate your account and possible fine for copyright infringment. Some ISPs will even go as far as installing a rootkit in your machine, a few years ago my sister got caught stealing music, Quest (the ISP) then cut the Internet connection and demanded to you to delete the music or pay a $4,500 fine. They knew how if you had deleted the material becuase they had installed a rootkit via the "free" Norton AV that came with the Internet service. Some ISPs don't care or will ignore complaints unless they are excessives.
>>
>>54123301
Don't pirate brand new things a week after.

If you're trying to recover a file from a drive, you're supposed to stop using that drive so the file doesn't get overwritten.
Either you've screwed yourself, or you didn't enable deep scan or some shit because I've found Recuva to be pretty decent when trying to recover shit

So to become viable as an employee in IT do I seriously have to accustom myself to all the generic systems and applications?

For example, I currently use GIMP for photo editing and blender for video editing for good reasons but should I switch back to Adobe CS just to familiarize myself with those generic programs?

Same goes for windows 10 and 8. I never moved on past 7 so that's all new for me but it seems like every job requires that knowledge.

Is this what people normally do?

Last time I got a cheap sata cable, the metal clip just would not let up and I ended up breaking the plastic by accident and removing the clip itself with a pair of pliers. I haven't had to yet, but I figured I should probably get around to replacing it one of these days. Any suggestions for a replacement cable, preferably one that doesn't even bother with a metal clip?

I've always booted from CDs and DVDs to fix computers and reinstall operating systems. But with the optical disc formats fading away and computers not including the drives, I need some info about USB thumb drives, which I'm mostly retarded about. Only ever had a 2GB one a while ago that I used to transfer a few files and flash a BIOS.

Now I have a 64 GB one and I want to make it bootable and use it the same way I used a Linux live disc.

Is it possible to have it possible to have it bootable for two things, though? Or just one at a time? For instance, I want it for Linux, but it would also be nice to be able to install Windows 10 from it. Is that possible with a single thumb drive or can it only boot one thing?

Also, I'm stuck with FAT32 I imagine, if I want to use it for this. Can Fat32 really only make use of 32 GB or is that just for Windows installs?

I'm gonna change my motherboard and I wanna avoid buying a windows 7 license (cause I'll get bullied by my nerd friends cause of approving microsoft's bullshit, and that I should never buy that shit cause I'm an electrical engineer stundent and blah blah) but I still need to install it cause I honestly don't wanna have to use a virtualbox to play on debian. Any solutions or should I give in and just use this fucking thing, I could torrent the OS and the the bios crap of the motherboard but an IT guy told me that may have repercussions on the mb. I'm still considering whether to do a course in networking or webdev. So I'm basically building a new PC because I play a lot of video games, blah blah blah. Made the switch from nVidia to AMD GPUs because I was advised to by a friend of mine. I'm pretty satisfied with the new card (Powercolor PCS R9 390) but for some reason I keep getting an error saying "Display driver AMD driver stopped responding and has recovered"
It's whatever, I'm still using my old RAM and hard drive (I'm waiting for a new copy of Windows 10 to come in to install on an SSD, but that's all future shit, I just put together what I had because I'm an impatient piece of shit.)
I ran DDU and removed all my nVidia shit, uninstalled and reinstalled AMD drivers with and without windows update's intervention, I've checked cables and checked temperatures and all that shit, and just when I thought it was good the motherfucker did the same thing as I was sitting idle with just Steam and background processes running.
I mainly either play video games or in my class use Adobe CC shit. Never built a PC in my life. I figure the problem will be gone when I perform a clean install on a different storage device and get more RAM coming in.
...And while I'm at it, because I switched my mobo and had an OEM copy of windows 10 mine's non-genuine. Not much to worry about since I don't plan on keeping it for more than 30 days, but is there any way I can extend or rearm in case of absolute fucking catastrophe?
Speccy attached. I'll have more than 8gb of ram after it comes in from the mail...thinking that might be the issue.

>TAK is a file extension for an audio file in a format that was created by Thomas Becker. TAK stands for Tom’s lossless Audio Kompressor. TAK files offer high performance compression and decompression, streaming audio support, error tolerance and detection with checksums in compressed audio streams. TAK files can be opened by several media players using a plug-in created and distributed by Thomas Becker via his website.

I want to make a site for streaming anime, something along the lines of the following:

magestream.org
kingstream.tv

I've read everything on html and I'm reading a lot on CSS with w3schools.com and I've made a few webpages and the like, but I don't know the progression to be able to copy these sites. Don't care about originality, any of these sites would work perfectly for what I want.

A few questions:
- Should I ignore trying to learn more using predefined courses of action and just move straight to trying to understand everything using 'view page as source'?
-is all the code used for these sites readily available, or are there things that I won't be able to get access to without requesting it from the site creators?
-I noticed a lot of 'jscript' shit when looking at source on magestream and kingstream (didn't get around to others yet), will this be a problem? I don't know anything about javascript.

Pic related is another example but can't get it past spam filters.

Internet is acting weird. It's working at an abysmal velocity, or not at all. Usually I fix this by disconnecting router and then clicking "Diagnose", hoping it resets the Wi-Fi adapter, but it's not working as much as it used to nowadays.

I'm trying to create a program where you input an x and y dimension and then populate a two dimensional array by entering in single digit numbers with no spaces.
C++
#include <iostream>
#include <cmath>
#include <string>
#include <sstream>
using namespace std;
int main()
{
int x, y;
string number;
cin >> x;
cin >> y;
int** y_arr = new int*[y];
for(int i = 0; i < y; i ++)
{
int* x_arr = new int[x];
y_arr[i] = x_arr;
cin >> number;
for(int loc_x = 0; loc_x < x; loc_x++)
{
cout << "We did it ";
cout << loc_x;
y_arr[loc_x][i] = ((int)number[loc_x])-48;
}
}
return 0;
}

The problem arises at line 22
 y_arr[loc_x][i] = ((int)number[loc_x])-48;

For some reason if i use the variable loc_x to locate an index I get a segmentation fault.

So, I have a single box with a lot of storage and many hard drives that I need secure for work, but I also need to use it for hentai and piracy and running probably-rootkitted executables.

I have separate instances of Windows as a weak form of compartmentalization, but obviously all files on the box are accessible to the OS with a default configuration regardless of the instance booted. I don't want damage from my AIDSbox spilling over into my secure environment.

What is a good solution for isolating these partitions from each other? I would like unsecure files accessible for transfers and administrative tasks from the secure environment, but I want the unsecure environment(s) to lack any ability to affect the clean partition.

>single digit numbers with no spaces

Why no spaces? This confuses me. Usually you'd have each number on its own - separated by spaces.

If you enter the entire blob of digits without spaces, C++ will recognize it as a single string. You can simply do
int width;
string value;

cin >> width;
cin >> value;

and split up the string from thereon. There is no need to have the user enter the height because you can use division. After all, in your scenario the entered height * width must match the following string's length anyway, no?

What am I missing here?
>>
>>54127496
Maybe because the only problem was that you were referencing the array wrong? Depending on the dimensions entered, y_arr may not have a loc_xth entry, so it's hardly surprising that trying to access that entry would be disastrous.
Also, it will crash if there aren't enough characters in the number string entered, so you should really add some verification of sufficient string length there - maybe that was causing some of your earlier crashes that caused you to swap the array indices.
>>
Interested in learning how to code/programming. I know my way around a computer, just not coding.
>>
>>54127576
>What am I missing here?
The string length is supposed to be equal to width, not height*width. It's entered once for each row.
I would say it's probably a good idea to have the user make clear their intentions regarding the size of the array up front.
The current approach he's using of having a single string specify the entire row, with one character per row entry, is terrible, though.
Also, I'm very skeptical of the multidimensional approach here. What you would really want to do in this situation is just allocate all the ints up front in a flat array. There's no need to create a dynamic array of dynamic arrays, it just makes things unnecessarily complicated and inefficient. But I understand it's probably for learning purposes.

>I'm doing this

Oh for fuck's sake anon. The size isn't dynamic at all. Just read in width and height, create a 2D array and fill it up one digit at a time.
>>
>>54127676
>The string length is supposed to be equal to width, not height*width. It's entered once for each row.

That makes no sense. There is no need to specify string length because it's determined automatically by newline separation.
And if every line has a different length, why the fuck would he input the global width at the start? No, it's most definitely a X * Y array. Constant dimensions.

>>
>>54127785
>That makes no sense
Maybe I misunderstood your post. I agree that your solution works, and is better. And that the matrix is of constant dimensions.
Also, he shouldn't be allocating each row separately, that's silly.

When you said "in your scenario," I thought you were referring to the way the string is actually used in his current code, in which the string is supposed to be the same length as the length of the row (or greater, though that would be pointless.)

What are some good and stable k10stat profile settings for a phenom II x4 945 in terms of undervolting to achieve lower idle and workload temps overall?

I tried the settings shown in picrelated from that tomshardware article dealing with this topic but soon as i clicked on "apply" my whole system shat itself and froze completely, basically the mouse and everything else stopped working and my HDD kept making these weird noises and after 5 minutes i decided to do a manual reboot, lucky for me the k10stat thing doesn't save anything permanently so when i logged back on the botched custom profile was gone and everything was back to normal

Also, how much do the sensor values shown in hwinfo et al differ from the actual temps of the CPU at a given moment? Would it be detrimental for me to up the cool and quiet p state/fan control max limit to somewhere around 131F within the BIOS or would it lower the lifespan of the CPU in general too

Basically the only reason i'm even tinkering with this is because firefox spergs out during practically every page i load resulting in the fan kicking in, something which isn't an issue at all in chromium but i would like to keep using firefox regardless of this, tried limiting CPU usage in taskmgr too but that didn't work either so yeah

I updated from Win 7 + Daz Loader and my Windows 10 is activated.

I sincerely doubt Microsoft can tell or even cares, they rather go after bigger companies with money.

You do have to upgrade from within Win 7 at least once to get Win 10 to activate, you can't just install it like a new OS otherwise it will ask for CDKEY.

Upgrade from Win 7, Win 10 gets online activated tied to the hardware and then you can do a clean install using an iso any time.

I had a job interview last Monday and in the interview I was asked for 2 ways I would improve on a snippet of code. It was a Sieve of Eratosthenes which iterated through the integers and tested divisibility of each integer by a list of primes, and if none divided it, that integer was added to the list.
My first answer was "use n += 2 instead of n++ so then you're not testing every even integer" which the interviewer agreed with.
My second answer was "only test against primes in the list that are less than or equal to root n, because if a number has no prime factors less than or equal to root n, then it has no prime factors."

He contested me on it in the most unprofessional fucking way. He didn't say "I don't think that's right"; he just blankly said "no, that's wrong." I told him it's elementary number theory and provided the proof.
The interview ended shortly after and I didn't hear back within a week, so I contacted them and asked how it was going. Well, I didn't get it, so I asked for feedback. Apparently I displayed poor knowledge in the technical question (Sieve of Eratosthenes) and was rude.
I proved the interviewer wrong when we tried to argue against a claim I made, and the only thing I actually said that could have been mistaken as rude was "this is basic number theory."

Is it worth contesting this or ratting in the interviewer for his shit attitude and having a poor knowledge of mathematics?

I'll do it then. I'm sure he had a mental list of answers prepared but just because I answered with something not on his list doesn't invalidate my answer.

if you don't have a graphical environment, try using pdftotext, it gives you a nicely formatted text file you can view.
You can't view images though.

GPU fan started rattling, I want to buy an aftermarket cooler for my MSI 290x gaming, what's a good option? The Arctic ones apparently are recommended for reference cards only.
>>
>>54132834
Careful with that CPU fan. It looks like its going to block ram slots and make access to the board more difficult.

So Windows 10 downloads Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586 upgrade and tries to install it. Restarts the PC and starts upgrade process. Then hangs on 2X percent and when I restart the PC, it rolls back to the previous version. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

What new laptop is considered good these days?
I currently have a x220 I would like to replace.

I would like to have
>good battery life
>vga (I would use it for presentations, so no dongles if I can avoid it)
>small (12.5")? Don't need a high resolution.
>good keyboard

Does such a laptop exist?
>>
>>54133272
x220 is considered a great laptop except for the 768p screen.
What do you dislike about yours?

Three PCs in the same house/network, when one of us host the other two can't join. So we usually have to join an empty server hosted by someone else. How can we fix this, and why does it happen?

How can I preserve softcoded subtitles when I convert a portion of a video to webm with ffmpeg?
>>
>>54133541
oh, and this is in almost every game, ie, Borderlands, GMOD, minecraft, csgo.
>>
>>54133352
It is getting old, I am at a point where I don't think investing more in the laptop is a good idea, given that I might have to replace it soon.
Maybe I should just replace the battery and make it live for a year or two more.

I don't mind the 1336x768 screen, I find it fitting given the size of the laptop.
It only becomes a problem when I share a screen with someone else.
>>
>>54133559
What do you mean with getting old?

What do you do on it?
>>
>>54133541
Sounds like you have a hub or an access point.

mostly development.
I know other processors compile faster than mine, run their tests faster, and can be battery for longer periods.
It is also 5 years old, so a new laptop seems reasonable right?

If I can actually download and update a new version of os x through my virtual machine, does that mean I could actually use that file to install real dual-boot os x without need to have an actual Mac?

Is my GPU dying? It's a nearly four years old AMD Radeon HD 6670 and my compuer has started crashing in a way that the screen goes black and unresponsive but the computer is still running and the other variant is sudden shutdown, like powers are suddenly off kind of thing. Most often this happens while playing vidya.
>>
>>54133801
First step would be checking the temperatures under load on GPU. Report back.
>>
>>54133801
Set a constant memory clock as variable memory clock can in some cases cause system instability. If that doesn't work, try increasing the voltage to 1.05V. If that doesn't solve your problem, try clocking down the GPU until it is stable. If that doesn't solve your problem, then it's probably a more serious issue and you'll probably have to buy a new card. You could try to fix it temporarily by putting it in the oven, but fixing loose connections/microfractures this way isn't permanent.

It was around 60c, at most way under 70c while GPU usage % was nearly 100%

I'm looking to get a new laptop.
Current laptop:
>Asus k53z
>4gb RAM
>128gb

Price range is around $1200. I mainly use my desktop for everything, however I would like my future laptop to be able to handle stuff like CK2 and maybe a few other smaller games. Preferably light weight. Any ideas?

Kinda, quality wise? Yes.

There isn't a huge difference between old i5s to recent i5s other than they are more efficient and better IGPU.
But if you have the money why not?

have you tried setting up an APN?
