I'm experiencing problems gaming lately with my 7970. I'll get fps drops to 30 in CSGO and similar drops in League of Legends. Even when it's reasonable the game is choppy and does not feel right. I can only assume this is a GPU-related problem and am considering replacing it.
What would be the next logical step from a 7970? Assuming I only play CSGO and League consistently and do video work, which doesn't require the highest end graphics. Don't necessarily have a budget, but I'm wondering if there are any updates or new cards coming out worth waiting for. I've been out of the loop.

It's the new beta drivers. I updated my friends drivers for him yesterday and he was getting drops to the low 50's on medium settings on LoL whereas he could play on high at 120fps before the update.

This GPU should have no problems playing CS:GO and league. I would actually suspect system related problems (bloat, long time without reinstall) or dust/worn out thermal grease -> causing GPU to overheat faster -> lowering performance.

In aus, the r9 390 is a tiny bit cheaper ($4) and the r9 390 has twice as much vram, there are already some games that use more than 4GB vram out there, and more that use more than 3.5GB.
If it was me, I'd buy a single 390 just for that, and then pick up a second for crossfire second hand in the future. It's a more futureproof setup despite costing almost there same.
2 years ago I upgraded from my HD6870 to a gtx 670, both cards have gotten vram bottlenecked so soon, that's why I'm leaning towards the r9 390. As soon as I turn up a setting that pushes my vram usage over 2GB in gta V the game starts to feel sluggish and really not fun to play anymore.
I wish I'd gone with a HD7950 just got that extra 1GB vram.

no game at 1080p or 1440p uses more than 4gb vram. vram is never the limiting factor. the graphics card will hit its limit way before you exceed the vram limit. even older cards like the 750 ti do great at 1080p with just 2gb vram.
think about it, if 4gb vram was such a limiting factor then the top tier cards like the 980, fury, fury nano and the fury x wont have that amount. these can all max out most games at 1440p without hitting that vram limit.
the 390 and 390x cant even use 8gb vram since they dont have the processing power. its all just marketing. amd needed a good enough reason to resell the 290 and 290x at a much higher price so they just stuck on an extra 4gb vram.

Are you retarded? I have a 980 and I've done several tests myself concerning vram usage and no game I've played as of yet uses anywhere near 4gb vram and runs at a respectable 60+ fps. Not even witcher 3 absolutely maxed out uses more than 3gb vram for me. I know nvidia cards have very good texture compression so it could be down to that.
Try finding a r9 290 or 290x/390 used
if you want the same performance as the 7970,get a 280x,380, or 380x

That GPU should more than handle those games at upwards of 4x what you're saying. The things to check would be:
1) Overheating and throttling
2) CPU Bottleneck (including malware sucking up CPU horsepower)
3) Drivers
It's one of those 3. I haven't seen a dead GPU still function like what you're describing.

I went from a hd5770, to hd5770 crossfire, to a gtx 680.
Sold the 680 and currently on an r7 260x.
Shadowplay would cause grahics drivers to crash on windows 10 and it got so annoying, so I ended up selling the 680 and picking up a 260x.
people give raptr so much shit here, but I've had zero issues with it. shadowplay was great while it worked, but fuck man, nvidia needs to fix up their w10 drivers.
