This. It's like people gawk because it doesn't have the overworked Cherry switches. Guess what? Cherry tactile and clicky switches blow. Their only good switches are the linears ones; IBM and Topre take the cake for the other two categories, although Alps is a very good substitute as well.

Topre keycaps suck in terms of thickness. Topre profile is really nice, the texture is nice too and PBT is a great material for keycaps unless you want doubleshots.

linear cherry switches are in general nothing but horrible. If you don't want knockoff switches, try to get some vintage blacks (the older the better), those are way better and on par with Gateron and nearly as good as Nixies.
You have to solder though. It's more than worth it though.
Reds and Clears both suck ass btw. Ergo-Clears is where it's at, but again, you'll have to solder to get these.

If you can't solder, you shouldn't get new Cherry boards to begin with. Get some vintage Cherries, Alps, or new Matias/Gateron boards. Stock Cherry is nothing but horrible, except maybe their clicky switches, if you can tolerate their sound.

it's probably just that one guy who got his first keyboard with reds and now think that reds are the best for anything because they're light and have no unnecessary tactile feedback or I don't know what.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with reds, I prefer my 35g linears, but reds are a perfectly valid option and quite nice to type on.

Cherry clears are also very nice switches, I don't really have a definitive preference between my HHKB with 45g Topre, my Ducky Shine 4 with cherry clears (apart from the fact that it's fuckhuge) and my memeforce with 35g gateron clears, they're all nice switches.

Well, I wouldn't say that cherry switches outright suck, though gateron does a better job at linears. I think tactile cherries are a matter of taste, I have a keyboard with dampened cream alps here too and they're also damn nice, but I wouldn't say that that all tactile cherries suck (clears and greens are good, browns are undeniably shit and blues are quite ok but too light for my taste, whites are quite nice too, can't make a judgement about greys).

>>54120577
Building your own keyboard is typically more expensive than buying one, but this depends largely on what parts you choose. If all you want are some specific switches you can also just get a cheap keyboard and use the case to house your switches, see pic related.

How about signature plastics DSA/SA keycaps? They have a international kit, nearly always. Or is your ISO to ghetto for that as well?
>>54120508
Are you implying, that thickness only matters with ABS? Because that's not how it works. Only differences between ABS and PBT is, that PBT is near impossible to Doubleshot and ABS looses its texture with time (how long depends on quality, not thickness)
>>54120577
It really depends. Pic related was like
80$ for housing (which already acts as a switchplate) - GON skinny 60
60$ for PCB - GON 60% PCB, but you can get a 30$ SATAN GH60 PCB
10$ for stabilizers
~20$ for LEDs, but you don't need those, obviously
40$ for Switches
30$ for Lube, but cheaper stuff will work as well. I just wanted krytox since I'm planning to lube quite a lot of keyboards and 30$ aren't that much, when you can use it on 10+ boards.
So without any extras a custom kb would be about 220$+keycaps and soldering. That may seem a lot, but you also get way better quality than any stock keyboard has to offer, except for the whitefox maybe, but you're to late for that one.
>>
>>54120665

What kind of old keyboards (post pictures, I like to see pictures) ? Turning a keyboard into a fully programmable one with a teensy is not that difficult at all. If you can hold a soldering iron in place and you can follow some instructions then you're good to go.

Sure, it may not look pretty the first time around (or at least it didn't in my case), but it really is quite easy to do and a fun learning experience.

Nice.

What kind of switches are those? Also, are the switches all you have (not that it'd made that much of a difference, you'd just have to get a plate made).

I actually got a AEK I with orange alps in that ISO. Always wondered how anybody can use that weird as fuck layout.
Sucks that Hana doesn't work out for you. If you ever intend to make your own board, you could just buy an AEK II and some Matias switches. You need a custom plate to accomodate the borderline retarded bottomrow of the AEK though. There's a guy around here who did just that, maybe he can help you a little.
Also Alps are really nice, way better than most (all stock) cherry switches. So this is really a good option for you.
They have to be in good condition though, since Alps age rather bad. the spacebar is a good indicator. It's made of ABS, so if it's all shiny and yellow, the keyboard has seen some heavy use.

I didn't quite go with that bottom row, but that's because I copied the layout of another guy (really cool dude), you can see my build log here.

Hey man, nice that you're still around. Come to think of it I have a question as well.
What kind of stabs did you use, especially for the spacebar. Swillkb always draws the small stabs (the one the AEK comes with) for everything but the spacebar always gets a large cutout. What did you do about that? buy some plate mounted Costar stabs? If so, where?
>>
>>54121096
>>54121143
you know, keeping the maximum resolution at 1k.px used to be a thing, now people just don't give a shit anymore
you gain NO important detail from sup-1k/1.5k resolutions in photographs
anything over that is wasting 1) bandwidth 2) disk space 3) memory 4) time
plus on a jpeg photo you don't want to see up close, downscaling makes the picture LOOK better. so fucking stop that shit holy fuck

>>
>>54121248
Matias uses cruciform-mount stabs for the spacebar.
>>
>>54121348
I meant the switches, mostly.
>>
>>54121368
Yes the switch are the same. I can confirm
>>
>>54121355
Yeah, but those are interchangeable. I got everything I'd need on the AEK, except for the kind of plate mounted stab (the part that actually clicks into the plate, I got the Alps-mount part) I'd need for the spacebar.

Is there a way to get the swillkb thingy to draw a CAD with the smaller cutouts for the spacebar?

If the caps aren't shiny and in good condition you should clean it up, no matter if it works or not. You can at least use the keycaps, if you know how to solder, get those switches out as well and build a new keyboard with them, also reuse the caps and stabs obviously.

is the Razer Blackwidow X Chroma a decent mech keyboard?

seems kinda cool but I had a feeling you guys would call it ricy overpriced shit. for like $160.
>>
>>54124138
Working in a calculator is a mess without a numpad. It's much harder to write with one hand and without looking if youre using the numberline and the operaters scattered around the right hand side.
>>

because a calculator is a tool used exclusively for data entry
one who needed to use a calculator would want a numpad for easy data entry
therefore, anyone who felt the necessity to have a dedicated calculator shortcut for data entry would likely also want a numpad for quicker data entry
what kind of person uses the calculator SO much, that they need a dedicated calculator button, yet doesn't want a numpad?
>>
>>54124199

It is indeed ricy overpriced shit, you can get a Ducky Shine 5 for that money, which doesn't require bloatware and comes with a standard layout on which you can fit just about any keycap set you want. And it also has your fancy-ass rgb lighting.

I can't believe the value of a calculator button vs fn-numpad keys is being discussed.

Let's look at it simply. Which would you use more?

Calculator button: Let's say you need the calculator five times a week. Five

Now the numpad: Literally every single one of those five times you need the calculator, this would be useful as well. So at least five. And then there are all the other times you need to write in a string of numbers, like credit card number, dates, etc. The number of times it would be useful with this function in a keyboard is NECESSARILY greater than that of a "open calculator" button.

Funny that you bring up the pok3r, it's actually a great example of just that.

>aluminum case
dye cast and spray painted, a properly anodized casing, or at least a casing that encloses the top area of the keyboard would obviously cost more to produce. Of course, it's a 60% so that doesn't really make much sense. But it's still a great way to save money on the casing, and the razer keyboard in question is a 100%.

>PBT keycaps
They're thick, but laser printed instead of dyesubbed (which again, would be far more expensive).

Remember the varmillo that was on massdrop some time ago? It came with dyesubbed PBT caps, backlighting and an anodized aluminium casing iirc, and it was something around 160 bucks at the lowest drop point. And that in group buy, so you can imagine how expensive a keyboard like the pok3r would be that's done proper.

Not to say that you can't have good keyboard with proper casing on the cheap, but omitting the top part of the case and just going for a floating key design is a great way to save money, which is something that razer is known for with switching from cherry to cheaper kalih switches while keeping the price the same.

I'm honestly a fan of the floating keys. It may save money but shit feels luxurious. With a wooden case it would probably cost $200

some people tried to remove the comic sans logo with solvent and the 'anodizing' rubbed off instead of the logo

i guess ill find out tomorrow, mine actually shipped ahead of their estimate

>shit feels luxurious
How so?

After he bent the case, so it is actually flat on the desk, used some marker to cover up the rust on the switchplate and scratches in the painted case, he just enjoys the luxurious feel of his keyboard. Because shit man, floating keys WOAH.

I think you're a bit too intense for keyboards.

So today i come home and my ducky shine 3 was missing from my desk with a note from my mom saying -talk to you later-
I rushed to search for it around the house, i fucking raged and made a mess in my mom's room trying to find it. I was livid!
When she came home i immediately berated her with questions and she told me straight up that she threw away my keyboard
and that she was no longer tolerating me typing and gaming after 9pm. She said that my keyboard kept her up at night and
she barely got any sleep. I explained to her that they were brown switches and that they were not that fucking loud. She was
clearly exaggerating but apparently recorded audio on her iphone from her room at night. I could hear it but she's probably recorded
it next to my bedroom door. It's her fault for having a policy of no closed doors. She grounded me for a week for trashing her
room and that was that. I went out back to the trash bin to see if i could find my precious keyboard and all i could find was a
cable clearly cut with pliers and a couple of keycaps. fuck mechanical keyboards, thanks to that keyboard i can't game at night
anymore.

so nothing of value was lost?

This is some weak-ass bait, everyone knows the Shine 3 has a removable cable. Cutting the USB cord wouldn't mean shit.
>>
>>54125672
yeah she was too stupid to unplug it, she just cut it so in case i would find it i could never use it.

Just got this bad boy in the mail, it's my first keyboard coming from a wireless logitech.

How badly did I fuck up /g/? I've never used Cherry MX before (apart from a key switch tester) and this feels like rubber domes. It's also really big and the slanting of the keys is annoying to get the hang of.

Topre switches are rubber domes. Overpriced rubber domes. I don't consider them mechanical and I think they are extremely overrated.
