This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that is required to make a fine watch.

So it's been a while since I've actually really tried to lead any discussion here or try and start a thread with a topic, basically like before November, but I think it's about time. Conversation has been stale, the entire last thread was mostly just a "what watch are you wearing" thread.

So I'm starting off with an image of an Urwerk UR-110 because it's a really unique piece, and Urwerks often get posted here simply as a representation of large and flashy watches, and no one has taken the time to talk about mechanically what's actually happening with the watches. And while some Urwerks are very large (and others are fucking gigantic) there is some cool things going on there. I hope to share with you if you haven't taken the time to look.

Take a look at this image. It's not the typical fare. The complication or mechanism we're looking at is called a "wandering" or "floating" hour display.
>>
File: wandering3.jpg (46KB, 454x400px) Image search: [Google] [Yandex] [Bing]
wandering3.jpg
46KB, 454x400px
Here is an image that more directly shows you how the wondering hour works. The correct hour is the only part normally seen when covered, and the rest are underneath.
>>
File: wandering4.jpg (119KB, 640x864px) Image search: [Google] [Yandex] [Bing]
wandering4.jpg
119KB, 640x864px
There is 3 wheels with 4 hours on each of them. The main part of the mechanism turns, changing which wheel is visible, and the wheels turn changing which hour is visible.
>>
File: wandering6.jpg (41KB, 595x654px) Image search: [Google] [Yandex] [Bing]
wandering6.jpg
41KB, 595x654px
Here's the Harry Winston Opus V manufactured with, you guess it, Urwerk. This one as you can see has a hand on the end of the hour pointing to the correct minutes, but there's only 1 hand. That's because this is also a retrograde minute hand, and ass the new hour turns at 0, the hand will come back to the new wandering hour hand.
>>
File: wandering7.jpg (146KB, 1200x750px) Image search: [Google] [Yandex] [Bing]
wandering7.jpg
146KB, 1200x750px
Now something you notice about the Urwerk designs is that it's not /exactly/ the same as the other wondering hour designs we've looked at. Take a look at this. Rather than 3 wheels orbiting a central point, and themselves turning along the same plane, the rotation of the hour 'wheel' here is actually at a right angle to the plane of orbit.
>>
File: wandering8.jpg (18KB, 400x289px) Image search: [Google] [Yandex] [Bing]
wandering8.jpg
18KB, 400x289px
And while the Urwerk is cool, you know what else is cool? Mechanical digital watches. We all love the Zeitwerk, but it certainly was not the first, digital mechanical watches far predate any mechanical alternatives. It's kind of odd to need to point that out, but I do so only because it's such a common mistake for newbies to make, when they still don't understand that analog and mechanical don't mean the same thing.
>>
File: wandering9.jpg (40KB, 400x525px) Image search: [Google] [Yandex] [Bing]
wandering9.jpg
40KB, 400x525px
But really I bring up digital watches just to finish with my favorite type of wandering hour watch. A wandering jump hour, like this Analogica. This uses a wandering hour that points to the current minutes just like the other ones we've looked at. But with an instant jump at the end of the hour, it makes it a true digital hour display that itself acts as an analog hand for minutes. For this particular watch it also has a date that rotates around the perimeter, it's at the top because it's currently set to the 31st, on the 15th of the month it would be at the bottom. This creates a very simple overall look, to a watch that is actually quite impressive.

Obviously there's a lot I didn't cover here, because it's already covered elsewhere for the most part if you just google it, and I'm not going to recreate it all, I just wanted to introduce this unique mechanism to you because if you find it as interesting as I do, there's going to be a lot you're going to find and enjoy when you search and learn about it. If you find something particularly cool, make sure to share it here.

So /g/, what do you think?
>>
>>54060525
I was about to ask if there was a wandering hour that worked just like this. Now is there something like this that mortals could have a chance at owning?
>>
>>54060580
Depends what you mean by mortals. Does under 10k work? Because that's doable,

And Analogica was just posted last month for under 9k
http://forums.watchnet.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=768975&rid=0

You could get a rougher wandering jump hour pocket watch for under that, not sure how much though.
>>
Does anyone know of any other mechanical watches with a power reserve for under $200? I have an Orient CEZAD001B, but I'd like another similar watch.

>inb4 power reserves suck

I like being able to know whether my automatic watch is actually wound or not BEFORE I'm late to work because the watch ran out of power.

Orients tend to dominate the cheap power reserve market.

Keep in mind, you could a watch that can manual wind. If it's in the morning and you want to make sure your watch has juice, then you'd just turn the crown.

On the Seiko ladder the new SRP divers, then Marine Master or Tuna, then GS Spring Drive Diver. You can go from $100-$10,000 and never leave Seiko.

If you want to branch out, it's time to start looking at boutique divers like maybe Halios or Helson.

Opinions on this?

I like the F91W but I don't want to look like a massive poorfag.

Also I've seen a couple of people here buying fake casios, I got one for free and I still feel jewed.

It weights pretty much nothing, feels like shit and gets +/- 5 min/month.
>>
>>54063914
It's always a risk/

Know your shit and check if the seller isn't a new account who just recently posted a lot.

Most scammers just try to work with watches that will bring them big bucks (Rolex,Omega etc). Also check from where the seller is, quite a few Indians,Philipino and various other south east Asian sellers there that might try to sell so called Philippines reworks.

So far two watches sold there, and milked that guy on the SKX pretty good. Managed to unload like 5 spare straps that i didn't use for shekels.

I know this one but I don't feel so confident about buying something from G.Gerlach. They proudly say that they support polish engineers and polish products, but when you check other watches you see chinese mechanisms. Only belts and cases are made in Poland.
However, the Unitra-like one is really interesting, screw the chinese module if the case looks almost the same like in the old Unitra. I'll think about buying it, but the price is pretty high now.

It's pretty good looking, but I hate how the hands overlap in the centre, there's no reason for that part to be that big, it's not lumed or anything. By the way how is the lume? Comparable to SKX?
I also like that they put lume next to date window, doesn't ruin the aesthetic as it does on many watches, just wondering if maybe it should be more like on the 9 index, basically mirrored, but cut off at the start of date window, now it's just a rectangle extending from the date window

These look really neat, and the concept is pretty unique, but... Don't they basically use an ETA 2892? Obviously with some modifications so you can get the wandering hours complication, and yes they are a lot more interesting than most of the crap at this price point, but still... Something about paying $10k for an ETA movement...

I think the SKX looks a lot more visually pleasing, but this one looks more utilitarian. The 8 o'clock crown is actually a very good idea on a dive watch, doesn't get caught on anything and won't dig into your wrist.

I'm willing to bet the movement is also a hell of a lot better than the SKX.

TAG Heuer gets a lot of hate from all watch afficionados everywhere. Because they deliver extremely overpriced for the quality they give. (no Bivers "latest" marketing move doesn't really affect that) Because they lie about their movements. Because they have asian microbrand tier QC. And so on.
What you posted however, is rightfully cherished by the same group. Heuer was a great brand. Tag fucked it all up.

Superb kek.

Among watch enthusiasts and collectors modern Tag Heuer watches are somewhat of a joke. Vintage models are a totally different history, though.
>>

They need to lose the 'TAG' as the TAG group doesn't own them anymore, go back to just Heuer and sort out the QC etc.

I completely understand, I'm not against Chinese clockworks, but the strange attitude of the people from G.Gerlach
Check their site
http://gerlach.org.pl/all_about_the_g_gerlach_foundation.html

>We realised, that even though many products are produced in Poland, very few of those products were invented and designed in our country. Poland is one of the largest manufacturers of cars in Europe – so what if all of those cars were designed abroad. They’re just made in Poland. The same goes for airplanes, fridges, TVs and many more items.
>We also want to support Polish engineers, technicians, specialists in design and ergonomy and help them put their ideas into production.

So what is Polish here? The watch case, the watch dial and the band. The most important thing is Chinese.

Should I buy this one? It's a blue bezel one, it's clearly used but not extremely beat up. I like the fact that it comes with its original stainless steel bracelet, which is not common to see on eBay. Maybe I could get a decent price, just a bit more expensive than yours.

Shlomo here.

I guess you could get it, seems a lil bit more beat then mine but the blue dial with the sunburst effect seems very nice. I'd consider trying to source a pepsi insert, they pop up from time to time for sale.

But the bracelet isn't necessarily a big plus. You can buy decent aftermarket ones that have solid links, for about 35$ on ebay. (Curved endlinks though)

reposting and pointing out my only trips for years

what are good watches similar in look to sarx011 or sarx027? I like the size and shape factors. i like seiko's designs, but most of the "classy" watches still have the large lug area, and i want a watch without that. looking at the sarx027 but i'd like to find some non-aliexpress tier watches that are options, but at the same time below $400 because i will only be wearing it a couple times a month or so.

As a concept these are the best I've ever seen. This is hands down the best way to display time aside from an digital read out. The thought that went into this had to be astounding.
My only complaint is that Urwerk's designs seem to be rather thick, but technically they are masterpieces.

Watches like these were everywhere in muh country in the early 90's, they were chinkshit mimicking popular watches Jap/Western, but just different enough to be considered an original design and just sturdy enough to be considered an uber-poorfag alternative to a Casio or Timex. I've seen some in store windows and from there they looked decent. The only one I've handled up close was a Ronda quartz model (pic) though. It was solidly built, but the all-brushed finish felt kinda cheap for me. I don't know how the other models are finished.

Don't, it's unique as fuck. What would have been even better if you got one of those 80's Hong-Kong ana-digi watches, where the digital part is electronic, but the analog is a HK-made pin-pallet movement with a plastic escapement. I'd show a pic of the ones I have, but once you take them apart you can't really put them back together, since the soft plastic pivots of the escape wheel and the lever will just bend instead of going into the pivot holes.

This is the definition of pseudo engineering right there.

All they basically did was redesigning a spring into a frame.

True engineering should be a mix of optimization, effectiveness, efficiency and simplicity for the sake of longevity. And not redesigning an old concept and sell it to dumb fucks that buy it because of it's novelty factor.

>inb4 that tripcuck asks "Why you no appreciate le fine craftsmanshipâ„¢?" ;_;

Because, it's nothing hard for a top watchmaker to do such a thing.
Now, if some russian would design a nice movement from scrapmetal, with traktor repair tools, then i'd appreciate the craftsmanship.

Why would an independent, that wasn't involved in developping the escapement, would feel the need to use it in his own, hardly produced and more expesive, research and developpment????

Also, there are very few labs, like Christophe Claret's, that are properly equipped to test this constant force escapement, and very few watches made with it as well.

Oh, and btw, if you're talking out of your ass just because some line you've read at Hodinkee, wich is probably true, since you're repeating it like a brainless monkey, keep in mind Benajimin wrote that article like three years ago.

You're absolutely ridiculous in your effort for stating a valid proof of your argument, or in your poor quality bait for that matter.

The silicon blade does interact with the amplitude at wich the movement work's and keeps it constant, by adding a bit more force at the uncoiling phase in the mainspring inside the balance wheel.

Off yourself kid.

Can you help me choose guys?
I like all of them except for the yellow one.

Yellow is objectively the best.
Just needs a different strap.

Is that a Daini 7016? These are incredibly hard to find in original, unmodified, un-Indian'ed condition, but if you can locate one then it's better than the more common 6139/6138. First of all, it's the only chronograph I can think of that has a stacked register and isn't made by Patek or Omega. Second, it has a flyback function. Third, failing to keep the chronograph running all the time will not eventually ruin the movement, unlike the 6139 and 6138 (the 7016 uses a clutch plate to engage and disengage the extra gears needed for the chronograph, while the 6138/6139 use a spring-loaded arrester to stop the hour recording wheel when the chronograph isn't running, and that spring has a 100% chance of fucking up).

Thanks guys, I think my choice will totally depend on the first bargain that pops out on eBay, would love to get one of these in a very decent condition for below 70€. I do love black and the blue one equally but if I found a good offer, I'd consider getting the full lumed dial one instead since that feature would be a novelty in my collection.
I'd kill for one with kanji date too.

Must be a genuine early one with a proper dial and a movement that's cleaner then the day it left the factory.

I also scrolled down and saw a couple of Vostok's that people were asking like 140$ for.Always knew that Japan has a thing for European watches, but not like that.

Oh... I don't actually think I'll pursue it unless I happen to run into it somewhere. I'm not hugely into chronographs overall and while a single subdial makes it better, who says I won't say it's still too much for me in a few weeks? I only first saw it today while looking around Bourne's Identity (in the movie he had a TAG in that bank, but apparently in the book there was something dressy, that he pawned for a Seiko chrono and some money).

Sorry to burst your bubble, Noah, but the date isn't Kanji on the Citizens. They're just Japanese numerals (the same as "Monday" being represented as "I" in Latin script, or "Thursday" being "IV"). Only Seiko does Kanji dates.

Are you referring to affordable (cheap) quartz??

Some are really great, and have the added bonus of reliability. You can pretty much abuse them with out any trouble and are fun to collect. In fact, I recently acquire a new quartz wich I'm going to share with you anons in a few days.

Cheers.

Gripless/no weights, removed weight tray, removed weight tray mount. By the way, that 78g is measured just a few moments ago and I didn't bother to try to subtract the cable weight, so it includes part of the cable weight.

Most people *like* the weight of a heavy mechanical watch on their wrist.

But if you really want something as light as possible, you'll find more options in hand-wind movements for the obvious reason that much of the weight of an automatic is in the big, heavy rotor.

All regular bezels on the Dirskie and Amphibias are coated brass. SE models have SS bezels and aftermarket ones are SS too.

Though to corrode it so badly you'd need to torture it properly.
