Memes aside, what do you guys think of Gentoo? Is it worth switching from Arch to Gentoo?

>inb4 install gentoo
>>
install gentoo and find for yourself
>>
>>54034093
Gentoo will never have the AUR
>>
>>54034093
Pretty restrictive in stable, since a lot of package maintainers don't give a rat's ass about actually getting one of the testing versions into stable. A certain IDE in stable is a version from 2012. Considering that it's *the* IDE on Linux to write .net/Mono code that is pretty sad.

>>54034164
You do realize that the AUR is just a result of "I don't actually want to maintain software" by the Arch developers, right?
>>
>>54034197
So? Some other people maintain it.
You don't want viber to be maintained by Archniggers
>>
>>54034164
Overlays > AUR
ebuilds > PKGBUILD
>>
>>54034093
With the right flags it is faster. But take a while to compile everything. But with today's hardware hardly you'll find a slow Linux.
>>
Gentoo ended my distrohopping by learning how to write ebuilds and providing overlays for the greater good. I am now in the process of switching all my buisness computer where I cherrypick the portage tree and custom overlays to use. I don't need to wait for compiling since the hardware is almost the same so I only need to compile once. It's a nice feeling having control over the complete package repository like that.
>>
>>54034164
ebuilds are easier to write than pkgbuilds nowadays. In pkgbuilds you have to write unpack, configure, compile and install sections, in gentoo you only really need to write the homepage and src_uri. gentoo can automatically detect what sort of compiling needs to take place and just do it, cmake, qmake or plain make doesn't make a difference.
>>
Overlays lack packages
>>
>>54034645
Not sure if stupid or trolling.
>>
I would use gentoo but I'm too lazy to install with the right flags.
So I keep Arch for meme purpose.

If I want to compile my distro myself then I guess I would choose something more hipster like crux.
I guess it can be fun to install gentoo on a rainy day for shitposting purpose tho.

Kill yourself.
These threads are so fucking cancerous. Try it for yourself and form your own fucking opinion.

Do you use Linux Edge?
>>
>>54034093
I think the first thing you need to consider, especially if you've never used a distro where you have to compile a fair amount of your packages yourself (Slackware user since 2001), is whether or not you want to spend hours (depending on the power of your CPU) getting a single program installed. The other day I thought I'd give IceCat a try because why not, except there was no precompiled package available for my architecture. So I start building it (granted, it's on an X200, but still). An hour of 90° 100% CPU operation later, I ran out of space on my root partition because the build process had used up 2.5 GB and still needed more.

Of course, you can say well, if you had allocated more disk space and had a better CPU and downloaded more RAM, etc.... but that's exactly my point. If you're going to compile large software packages (like DEs, browsers, office suites, and kernel itself) from source, be prepared to use a shit-ton of CPU time and disk space. And do it again every time you want to upgrade a package. And all the dependencies of the package that are getting upgraded. And everything that depends on the package because if you update a dependency, you usually have to rebuild all the packages that depend on it too. The only practical benefit is the memeness of running Gentoo and the ability to customize software packages to a degree that is unavailable for most traditional distributions.
>>
Gentoo is literally the best distro ever made by far.
>>
>>54034197
>>You do realize that the AUR is just a result of "I don't actually want to maintain software" by the Arch developers, right?
Is that a bad thing? If you want distro devs to judge what software should suit you instead of doing it yourself, you can use any other distro for that. Or OSX.
>>
>>54034093
Arch vs Gentoo is my biggest GNU related dilemma. In the end it's basically a question of installation/update speed vs running speed. Also I'd imagine Gentoo feels less cluttered than the average Arch system does due to use flags trimming off some of the surplus dependencies and such without additional effort.

But you're not doing it yourself, a random person is doing it for you. If you want to argue you're doing it yourself, then you wouldn't use the AUR, so that's just a retarded argument.
>>
>>54038676
By "yourself" I was meaning the package maintainers, and possibly also the actual you if you want to bother writing and maintaining a pkgbuild.

It's pretty worth it, Portage and Use flags are great, plus it gives you even more customization options than Arch (if that's what you like of course)

Arch can replace it. If your one of those fags that hate systemd. You can install openrc on arch. It would be easier on Manjaro.

Gentoo is shit. I know some people who installed it and tried it. They said it was garbage and it wasn't worth installing.

That's why le epicz trolls sey "install gentoo"
I am guessing your a newfag.

Layman is hard. OK.
You have to, like
layman -a stuff

And then mask the ocerlay.
And then unmask the package you want.
And then probably do another sync...

Install it on a laptop that you barely use and make it a project. I wouldn't use it as my main but that's just me.

I love slackware on my everything. I respect gentoo users because they're almost always not retarded or faggy like the typical arch/fedora/*buntu luser, but I've been running slack my whole computing life and as an ordained and licensed SubGenius I feel a religious duty to not use anything else.
