whats so good about this one? Also i heard there were better ones out there

Just a classic I guess. Maybe it's good to know certain traits of a language from the source.

Not sure if /g/ approved but I'm contribootin.

Really ?!?
We got this thread just yesterday..

>>54032278

I've worked with it, it's really good.
It's step-by-step, intuitive and comprehensive.

Of course there are other good books as well.

why is good tho?
>>
Has anyone actually read those Knuth books? Are they worth reading?
>>
>>54032518

It's an very interesting book, beccause it's a novel - about project management. The author has written serveral more scientific books about project management (i.e. "Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams") and knows what he is talking about. So you can get a lot of hard facts (methods) and soft facts (insights and experiences from everyday project management) in a way that is not difficult to read.

Not the be-all-end-all book to project management, but still good.

They're good if you want to know ALL and i mean ALL about algorithms. They not only explain the algorithms but the story behind it and he also gives accurate "time complexities" (basically ignores big O using his assembly machine).
Btw you need to have a really good grasp on combinatorics and we willing to understand hard algorithms written in assembly, before diving into it.
>>
>>54032739
Good point. I'm sure you're doing a lot better with Bucky's YouTube tutorials.

Yeah, you didn't go to university. Stop this charade because you're really embarrassing yourself.

What kind of retarded comparison is that? How old are you? How can you claim to have gone to an accredited university when you're not even old enough to post on this board?

Your reading comprehension sucks. You should read better books to fix that.

Clearly whatever you're doing is working. I mean, you don't have to post in threads to validate it. That's not what you're doing, right? Yeah okay fella, good stuff. Toodles.

Provided you put in the mental effort it requires, it will twist, bend and turn your brain inside out numerous times, give you a bunch of englightenement moments, then leave you a much better programmer even if you were to never use a functional language again.
>>
Anybody tried reading this?
I started reading it because I was enjoying the mathematics, but it suddenly shifts into MIX which I just can't understand.
Granted I don't know anything about assembly nor machine language, but can undergrads be expected to?

>When will idiots realize that you learn programming by doing not reading

You can't learn programming by the book, you have to actually do it.
But to get GOOD at programming, you need to read books. Just get "Code Complete" and read a chapter every day. It will definately enhace your coding in many differnt ways.

I'm currently reading Introduction to algorithms by cormen for my CS class.
although sometimes it gets quite difficult to understand (Maybe because i'm reading it in english and not in my own language, idk).
Anyway can someone suggest me an easier book to read on the topic too?
Planning to read both of them.
>>
>>54033598
The reasoning of starting this thread had nothing to do with learning how to .... just for the people who like to read books, it doesn't even have to be /g/ related. let's say a book that introduces a way of thinking that would be helpful in programming

Believe it or not, but Wikipedia is a very good source for fundamentals of programming. They have decent explanations and often also links for further reading.

The same author has wrote some other books who are fictional as well as scientifical, but I don't know if they are good.
