Thoughts on Kano?

Why does it come with a keyboard
>>54026259
so.. its an overpriced pi starter kit?

Heil Hitler
if all of that is any more than $50, it's a fucking rip off. Otherwise, if the book has anything worth it to read for kids, maybe it's an okay idea. I's going to go down the shitter, though.
>>54026259
Why limit yourself to the stuff they sell you in some kit when you could buy everything seperately? Probably cheaper and more to your liking.
the keyboard is really cute, but I personally don't want the rest of the kit. it could be cool for kids maybe??? I don't know how I feel about it I guess
I prefer Kanu.
>>54026435
Looks like something straight out of /csg/.

>ein you see it
>>54026259
I actually kinda dig that keyboard for some appications.
Unlike the rest of the package, it's only a little overpriced. The rest is ridiculous.
>>54026336
I like it, I wish I had something like this when I was in school. If I ever had kids, I would buy something like this for them.

I was considering getting my seven year old one of these, but I feel like it is overpriced. Does anyone know of a cheaper bundle that has similar specs? I know that you can buy the Kano OS on an sd card so it shouldnt be too hard to come up with a diy kano kit. I attempted googling around but I have no idea what Im doing. There are so many little chip computers.

I don't know how we're going to compete with a whole generation of kids who started programming when they're five.

i was a teacher at a private school for a year after i finished my BA (now in an MA program), and they made me the head computer teacher because most of my work background was in IT (a few stints as a sysadmin, and general tech-support stuff). i was teaching all the kids in the school between ages 5 and 14.
a bunch of parents were pushing the idea of an after-school "technology club", so the headmaster tasked me with putting it together. i thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce kids to lignux, so i brainstormed a bit and passed a few ideas by the headmaster. bootable flash drives with lignux, raspberry pi, programmable robots etc... she had just read an article about the kano kits and suggested that. i pointed out that they're quite pricey compared to a most raspberry pi kits, but she really dug them, so we agreed to use those in the club.
money aside, the kids *loved* them. the bright colors, the stickers, the instruction books and lesson plans. everything. they loved putting them together and would even fight over who got to assemble what. was actually a huge success.
so no, they're not meant for /g/entoomen like us, but they're fantastic for children, and it's not like i had to shell out any cash, as the school paid for all the units. kids learned about lignux, and i was able to segue that into teaching the older students all about lignux, foss, stallman, and the gnu project in proper classes. by the end of that year, i had several middle schoolers using their distro of choice on bootable flash drives at home, and a few were even experimenting with stuff like tails (mostly to subvert the school firewall) which made me very proud.
a lot of these kids parents were raising them on apple devices and locked down chromebooks and shit, so the kano was a great way to start weaning them off of proprietary software.
>>54026789

>>54026789
You're far too sensible and level headed for this board anon.
You mirrored exactly the though process I was going to write out, but you've got first hand proof.
I think these kits look awesome for kids, the price point is arguably very unreasonable though.
>>54026789
>kids learned about lignux, and i was able to segue that into teaching the older students all about lignux, foss, stallman, and the gnu project in proper classes
Great, let's raise another generation of lugnatics.

Very neat antecedent. I wish I had a teacher like you when I was still a kid. Good job.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
So, it's overpriced Raspberry Pi (like if this shit wasn't overpriced by itself), with some peripherals, that will teach "programming" on Linux in… What exactly?
>booklet
>calls board a "computer brain"
Shame the preview is so short, I can't see beyond assembly guide.
>Kano provides an introduction to various programming languages including Python and Javascript.
>Kids will learn Python through our Kano Blocks by making Minecraft and Pong, and can dive into the world of Linux by going on a Terminal Quest and by making Snake.

Lol, it's generic /csg/ tier wireless keyboard.
>>54026763
I'm more afraid about the job market they create. God forbid, I don't want to "compete" with such people. The web is already shit. The future generations taught "coding" like that can only bring it further down.

Since everyone in this thread is talking price I decided to check for myself on amazon what a comparable setup might cost (with amazon prime and free shipping, also some are 'add-on' items)
$42 Raspberry pi 3
$25 keyboard
$7 8 GB microSD
$7 Raspberry pi clear enclosure
$4 USB wall plug for power
$4 HDMI cable
$3 ethernet cable
$2 usb cable for charging
$94 total
I wouldn't call $150 a terrible ripoff considering the kid-friendly design and having everything standardized, but yes it certainly is not a 'deal'
IF kano offered bulk discounts for schools/large orders then I would say it would be entirely fair at maybe a $120 price point, but still when it comes to the cost of everything else in a child's education this is a drop in the bucket and more likely to get them interested in something real that they can apply
>>54026789

>>54027194
eh I forgot the HDMI cable the first time I posted it
all the price estimates I gave were a little more conservative as well, rounded down to whole numbers and didn't include any possible taxes on anything

thanks for the positive comments /g/uys. i'm here about 75% for the lulzy drams and 25% to contribute, so the contention is always welcome. that was actually a great teaching position, but my academic passion lies within the study of history, so i gave it up to continue down that road in grad school. did start off in undergrad with compsci though, but quickly changed my major to history then too. i'll likely be substitute teaching kids during summers for my whole life (don't see how i can live off teaching history at shitty colleges, so will need to supplement my income), so i'm sure i'll have many more opportunities to convert younglins into fine /g/entoomen.

I've always wondered what big museum guys like you think of local town museums that are around places?
Like the little community museums that are like 5-6 rooms in a converted building that just have the local history of an area
Do you guys think those are good or do big museums just laugh at them?
