personally, on every single desktop, I have windows taking up every inch of screen space. Usually it's two, but sometimes it's three with one taking up approximately half of the screen and the other two taking up the other space (~25% each)

Windows ricing is pretty limited, you're better off using some sort of *nix/*nix based shit. Lots of choice regarding display managers, desktop environments, window managers, etc. I'd recommend starting with Xubuntu if you want something you can rice that's very usable.

I like herbstluft's frames but I think i3 has the same thing. You have a lot more control over where the windows are placed compared to awesome, anyway. In awesome you just cycle though preset layouts.
I've used i3 once and having all the vi-like binding shifted to the right for default keybindings is weird. Petty reason, I know. But since testing wms take a while, I go by first impressions. I liked 'splitting containers' or whatever you call it in i3 though. But with herbstluft and i3 (and others), the config is all in bash.
So in the end it's personal preference and trying out every one you're interested in.
