noise is okay. replaced the front two 70mm fans with 60s that make less noise, but they're pretty ricer so I have to cut the anode power on the LEDs before I can take a non-potato pic of the front.

here, have a potato pic. I feel awful.
>>

also for brevity's sake the power/HDD LEDs are back to being stock, but the LEDs from the fans overpower them, another reason to cut the anodes.

>>
>>53942027
The 390 strix has its cooling fins running down the length of the board, which is what you want if you have a vertical case like mine, the fans at the bottom blow directly into the heatsink keeping it cooler. Also apparently straight heatpipes don't work as well when vertical.

If my case had one more expansion slot I would not have to mount the PSU this way. This is temporary, because I have a Thermaltake F31 shipping that has exactly one more expansion slot. Also, I know I need to dust and cable manage, but I am waiting until I get the new case.

Why are you running 2 GPUs? Is this CrossfireX? I heard that would work without SLI bridges. Unsure about that Windforce card, it looks more like the current gen Nvidia lineup. Got one of the old Kepler based myself.

I am doing a GPU passthrough, so that I can run GNU/Linux, and play games on Windows 7 at the same time. The Windows 7 VM gets half of my i5, a physical SSD, and my r9 270. Linux has the other half of my i5, a different SSD, and a GTX 970. I will probably switch the GPUs around once I get everything moved into the new case.

Up in the air between 6700k and x99. First option would be cheaper of course but is ddr4 and the 6700k worth it over z97? I can get a brand new i7-4790k for $260. Money isn't too big an issue but I hate to retire my perfectly good z97 board and 16gb ddr3.

Well your PC needs work. Spaghetti city for one. Secondly, I know for a fact that the hyper 213 evo you have can be mounted so the fan blows air out the back. As it is mounted now, your CPU heatsink is blowing it's hot air right onto the back of your video card.

As for your PSU, I'd recommend a replacement ASAP. Looking at the specs online, that power supply only offers a combined 360w on the 12v rails. Each rail is only offering 18amps too. Even the combined 36 amps on the 2 12v is low. Minimum recommended for r9 290/390 series is 42amps.

As it stands right now, you're playing with fire.

ah yes that picture was from when i just hooked the psu up, also i thought the evo 212 fan sucked air instead of blowing it in, ill switch it to the lower side if thats the case, it would also explain the high temps i get on idle.

But the looking at the manual it came with the psu gives 456W on the 12v the amps are low yeah it gives 38a

Generally speaking, most people steer away from GTX 960 because AMD is a better value at that sub-$200 price standpoint, albeit you can still find a good deals for them if you shop around if you dead-set on AMD; I personally wouldn't buy one that didn't have 4GB of RAM.

Both GPU's are 1080p/30FPS decent for most modern, graphically intense games, while they will probably destroy most last-gen games. Personally, I wouldn't cheap out too much on GPU's since they are the single-most determining factor when it comes to gaming performance, while conversely, I'd rather base my build with the CPU that I want, than have to worry about upgrading later.

i have a Seagate sata 2 1TB drive that has been in active use for the last 5 years now with no problems or errors.

And a raid 0 setup of 2x1TB Seagate drives that see a shit ton of use as workspace for editing and file encoding. Both zero errors, good SMART data, and been in use for 2 years.

Cool. I've tried confirming that all my hardware supports VT-d or IOMMU fully, and it looks good on paper. Still, looking at some documentation for getting the VM with passthrough up and running it's obvious I'm going to have to get my hands dirty before I can really tell.

Plan is to run Debian testing, but not sure if it's going to be Xen or KVM. What are you using? Care to share any experiences? Thanks a ton.

Oh and also. I see you're using a dedicated video card (now 970, later r9 270). How have you connected your monitors in that case?

I'm planning on using internal graphics of the 6700K, but might add a dedicated desktop graphics card later.
>>
>>53954415
I used that first arch wiki page to do everything.

For my OS I used arch, because with most other systems you have to update your kernel to get passthrough working. With Arch, because it is a rolling release, you know that you have all of the latest packages that support passthrough well. I use Debian on my Librebooted x200.

I have a script to launch the VM:

#!/bin/bash
OPTS=""
# Basic CPU settings.
OPTS="$OPTS -cpu host,kvm=off"
OPTS="$OPTS -smp 4,sockets=1,cores=2,threads=2"
# Enable KVM full virtualization support.
OPTS="$OPTS -enable-kvm"
# Assign memory to the vm.
OPTS="$OPTS -m 8000"
# VFIO GPU and GPU sound passthrough.
OPTS="$OPTS -device vfio-pci,host=05:00.0,multifunction=on"
OPTS="$OPTS -device vfio-pci,host=05:00.1"
# Supply OVMF (general UEFI bios, needed for EFI boot support with GPT disks).
OPTS="$OPTS -drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly,file=/usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd"
#OPTS="$OPTS -drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=$(pwd)/OVMF_VARS-pure-efi.fd"
# Load our created VM image as a harddrive.
OPTS="$OPTS -hda /dev/sdb"
# Load our OS setup image e.g. ISO file.
#OPTS="$OPTS -cdrom /home/user/win7.iso"
# Use the following emulated video device (use none for disabled).
#OPTS="$OPTS -vga qxl"
# Redirect QEMU's console input and output.
OPTS="$OPTS -monitor stdio -soundhw ac97"
OPTS="$OPTS -usb -device usb-host,vendorid=0x0d8c,productid=0x000e"

sudo QEMU_PA_SAMPLES=128 QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=pa qemu-system-x86_64 $OPTS
>>
>>53954429
The reason I didn't use onboard graphics is because my onboard only has 3 video outputs, and I use 4 screens. Also, I play any games I can naively in GNU/Linux. I have one screen hooked up with DP, one with HDMI, one with dual link DVI, and another with single link DVI. On the card that is passed through I have one displayport passed through.
>>
>>53933603
What are you using to light up inside the case at the top? Is it a case feature or your own light you installed?
>>
>>53954663
Looks like an LED strip or cold cathode. You can buy them pre-wired for molex or SATA.
>>
>>53954569
This is perfect, really appreciate it.

Updated kernel with Debian testing should be fine I think.

>>53954604
Aye, output can be a bitch with integrated graphics. One of the reasons I got the Z170-Pro which have 1x DP, 1x HDMI and 1x DVI which will work for my current two monitor setup. At the same time it kind of sucks since I bought the Evga 970 partly because it had 3x DP..

>Also, I play any games I can naively in GNU/Linux.
I would like to do the same. Atleast the integrated graphics (hd 530) should run some games fine.

>On the card that is passed through I have one displayport passed through.
I see. Looking at this video from the reddit post, he's able to use the monitor for both desktop and passthrough. Haven't looked at the details yet, but would you happen to know how he would've connected it? Or maybe how I could achieve the same with integrated graphics?

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, it's just not that often you find someone who actually got this shit working.

I don't really ever like display scaling. My two main screens are 1600p at 30 inches, and I can read them fine. I usually make text as small as it can be as long as I can still read it, so that I can fit more on the screen. I do not have any sort of scaling on.
>>

Not that guy, but scaling abilities depend on the widget toolkit and/or desktop environment. Plasma (KDE 5) with Qt 5 does a fairly good job, dunno about others.

Use AMD overdrive for reading temps under load. Thermal margin is basically the distance between your current temp vs the thermal threshold. Higher numbers = better temps. Anything more than 70C away from the threshold is unreadable. Try to keep your cpu between 25C - 30C away from the threshold.

Love the cable management.

Mine is a goddamned mess behind the case. and I have a full tower
>>
>>53969032
Thank you! Took forever desu. Both the power and sata cables to the SSDs were a bitch, as you can see they're under a bit pressure, but it's fine now.

This is exactly why hardly anyone does themed PCs anymore, they age so poorly.

I mean, unless you go with something like a military theme in a Corsair C70, Clean aesthetics and minimalism will always look better than something like "THE WIDOWMAKER" with red and black spider accents, or "DEEPFREEZE" that's all blue and white with airbrushed glaciers and dremmeled cracks in the side-panel window to look like ice.

It seems like such a good idea when you're 15, but in three years it's embarrassing.

Why is every video card in this thread sagging horribly?

a GPU is basically a brick made of copper and aluminum with motors and fans, that's being held in place by a single narrow strip of silicone attached to a plastic clamp.

So, there you go...

Extremely cringy

Nice. Let us know how it goes.

Will do. Probably won't be in the current thread though.

My bottom GPU is being held up by my PSU.

>Get a fuck huge case, with option to install a shitton of hard drives
>Proceeds to remove only the optional hard drive rack, but the main one too, AND the optical bays
>Only uses two SSD's

This triggers me

Either get the Define S or build a fucking mITX
>>
>>53971231
I get what you're saying, but I got the R5 at the price S usually goes for. Even if I just threw out all the bays, it has other small details that the S lacks such as rear fan mount options, fan control, front removal of bottom dust filter, more padding etc. Nothing important, but it helps.

mITX/mATX could work, but I wanted options to add a second graphics card without it getting too tight.

Could still probably do with a smaller case though. I don't really see why they made the R5 so fucking wide.
>>
>>53971507
Could have gotten the NZXT s340. No optical or HDD bays. Full atx case. Can't fit tall coolers up to 160mm tall. Dual ssd mounts.
>>
>>53971558
I suppose. Would rather have a smaller R5 desu.
>>
>>53971638
I would too but they don't make it. They make an mitx r5 lookalike now though. The S nano.
>>
>>53971657
Yeah that one is pretty cute, but like I said, I didn't want to rule out the possibility to add a second GPU. Appriciate the input though.
>>
>>53968060
clean, makes the CM hypermeme 212 look good
>>
>>53972455
Heh, thanks. Would love to get something fancier, but it's just so cheap and quiet that I couldn't say no.

Zero rpm PSU and GPU truly is a bliss. I can't hear that my computer is running when idle.
