Open:

It runs MS-DOS 5.0 and has a full greyscale EGA-compatible screen, with Quicken and Lotus 123 built in of course. It is fully PC compatible and you can even plug in sound cards, ethernet cards, and whatnot into its PCMCIA slot.

Has a rare low power 186 processor too.

oh yeah, you're not far off on the hardware, but the screen is admittedly only CGA and it might be tough to find a PCMCIA audio card that will draw below the 150mA the slot is willing to put out. there's only like three network cards that work as well. the sohoware ND5120 is the only one that still seems to be regularly available on ebay these days

Looking at the great variety of shapes and designs Nokia experimented with really makes you realize how much everyone just copied the iPhone once it came out. I hate how everyone claimed "Well how are you supposed to build a smartphone??" a few years after. Look at Nokia, they had some cool ideas and still tried.

Jesus, where do you live? It's only $17 for me. I'm thinking of buying one pair just because of the line in my screen and muh spare parts. The antenna I added to mine is starting to crack the back panel so I reinforced it with epoxy putty and now it is even uglier and I can't undo the mod if I wanted to.

I ordered a ssd 'kit' for mine since my hdd is failing but since I just got the ux, I'm probably putting the ssd in the ux instead. Having that many umpcs just means that I get to mod them even more and I don't have to worry about breaking them. Maybe I'll be able to mod in a proper nipple and then I don't have to use that shitty joystick.

Remember MP3s and the shitty pre iwhatever devices that played them? This motherfucker right here was like the xbox one without games, in that it had a IR remote reciever built into the unit itself, recorded whatever RCA device you had, like your xbox phat or PS2. It predates USB micro so it uses mini connectors for the charge/data, and the motherfucking USB host (the upskirt cam connects here). I cant believe Archos didnt take over the world, where are they now?

Fuck that, cherry trail all the way. I had Windows 10 on my ux-280 when I sold it. It worked well enough but it definitely runs better with xubuntu or xp. I'd be on-board for a modern version though. The closest we'll get is the gpd xd which is a clamshell instead of a slider though.

I still have every phone I've ever owned, going back to 1998. My old Nokias, Motorolas, and Sonys, just sitting in a filing cabinet.

And the other day, I fancied a thought about getting a series of small frames, and mounting these phones in them, as a wall display. A kind of art, I guess.

So I got them out, and lined them up chronologically on my desk. And it was a trip down nostalgia lane, just to hold some of them in my hands again. Memories just came flooding back.

That's how it was with the older models. From 2010 or so, my phones have basically been just black rectangles with touch screens. They evoke no emotional response from me.

There's a deeply physical aspect of technology that we're losing touch with.
