At work we have a small 1TP external hard drive connected to the network by ethernet, and we map it as a network drive on everyone's workstation.

Many times a day it becomes unavailable with the error in pic related. I can still ping it but cannot access. If I power cycle it, the drive comes back up for some amount of time.

What could be causing this?

Alright, so I am trying to set up a second PGP key pair with Kleopatra. I went through all the normals steps and I have both my public and private key.
Problem is that I cannot figure out how to select which key to use when encrypting a message, and I cannot get my key to work properly.

When someone else sent my new key an encrypted message I can try to decrypt it. When I do this, it does not ask me for my password. It simply says "No signatures found" and the message is magically decrypted. The same thing happens in reverse if I try to encrypt a message.
Why the fuck is this happening and how do I fix it?

I have here a 1996 PC with these specifications:
>CPU: Pentium
>Motherboard: Intel 82430VX
>RAM: 2x ???
>Ethernet board: Genius - PCI?
>VGA board: Union - PCI?
>Audio board: Creative Labs - unknown slot
>FDD: Mitsumi 3.5"
>HD: Quantum Bigfoot 5.25" 1.2~2.5GB - ATA
>CD Player: Creative Labs CD 1620E
I don't know the rest of the computer, because I do not have the correct PSU, but the HDD works fine. It has Windows 95 installed. But, as it has less capacity than my SD cards, I do not see a reason to install it on a newer PC.

Should I try to make the PC work, or do I throw it away?

Do anyone use these adapters in 2016?

Motherboards still come with internal com port headers.

My guess would that you would get a motherboard with com port on the back IO if you actually want it.

I have one. I have a multimeter that can log data, and it uses a serial port. I also have an ancient DOS machine, and when I fire it up, if I want to transfer data, I do it with a null-modem serial cable. So I don't use it often, but I'm glad I have it there.

they put em on headers because most people don't want them anymore and never will, but it's built in to the chipset so it only costs a ten-cent header to let someone who does want it get a bracket and use it.

Is the Law of Conservation of Energy the one that explains that if you throw an object up in the air at a certain velocity it will comeback down at the same velocity? Or am I thinking of a different law.
>>
>>53902627
>chinese botnet app store
Yeah, nope
>>
>>53903315
It depends. Is it OEM Windows or did you buy retail Windows?

OEM: Yeah it's tied to the mobo. You can replace the mobo and reactivate, but only if it's the same model mobo, like you're replacing a broken one.

Retail: You can move the key to a completely different machine as many times as you like, so long as you aren't activating new installs of it so often they think you must have shared the key online.
>>
>>53903316

When you throw it up, it slows down until it has speed = 0 and then it comes back accelerating. It is because of the force that "wants it back", which is gravity.
>>
>>53903316
That's just simple acceleration and gravity. A thrown object accelerates downward at a constant rate. However long it takes to reach the top of its path, it will take the same time to come back down, and since acceleration is constant it will be going the same speed.
>>
>>53903316
>it will comeback down at the same velocity
It won't because terminal velocity.
>>
>>53903134
Been using qbitorrent for almost a year now, never had any well-seeded torrents stalled
>>
>>53903316
Conservation of energy says no matter what amount of conversions and fuckery you try, there will always be the same amount of total energy. For instance if you burn something, if you measure all the heat, photons, sound, and smoke emitted, their mass/equivalent energy will equal the mass lost from the thing that was burned.
>>
why aren't more people using water cooling on their GPUs? isn't it the same concept as a water cooled CPU?
>>
>>53903359
Yeah, OEM and to a different model.

Leaves the question of if the new 10 key will be valid for the 7-10 install or if I'm going to have to suffer through losing my settings and shortcuts and whatnot.
>>
>>53903383
Models don't usually take things like that into account.

Trying to connect my Laptop to my TV and nothing seems to work.

Using a VGA to Composite (RedYellowWhite cables).

Ive used VGA to output my laptop to a monitor before

Ive used Composite to my TV before fine

But for some reason my VGA to Composite cable when hooked up from Laptop > TV I get no picture.

Ive bought and returned two VGA composite cables now, but Im finding it hard to believe it's jut the cables thats the problem

What could be the problem
>>
>>53903479
Because water blocks for gpus need to be made for the specific graphic card and cost 10 times more to make where as cpus have same types of sockets and its cheaper to make
>>
>>53903484
New key should work. You can generally just tell it you want to give it a new key in system properties or when it bitches about needing one.

>>53903479
Because it involves prying the stock one off your GPU and voiding its warranty.
>>
What are the ways I can save power on a ThinkPad T420 running Arch Linux?
>>
>>53903507
The cable is the problem. Did it come with any directions? It probably only works with a couple specific resolutions and refresh rates.

Also if your TV has HDMI, you should use that instead. I've seen a bunch of TVs with VGA inputs as well. Really just the old tube TVs that only accept composite.

>>
>>53903546

>>
>>53903614
The pictured thing looks like what you need, provided it goes the right direction.

I have one that looks very similar I got from ebay that goes the other way, but I recall them selling both kinds. I use it to display composite on my PC monitor. It has some sort of digital processing that makes composite in look almost as good as S-video, and it only cost $20.

>>
>>53903614
I take it you bought a horse shit like this one? These only work on video cards that are designed to output composite through their VGA ports. Very few do this, but the guys selling these cables don't mention that.
>>
>>53903699
Depends on the phone. Most have some way to put the current guy on hold and take the incoming call. Usually it's signaled to you by a couple beeps. Smartphones typically do it through a pretty intuitive GUI, while older phones have some keys you press to take the call.
>>
>>53903710
rule of thumb is look up is two video cables are directly compatable
dvi d and hdmi
if not then you need an active converter
>>
>>53901282
did he die?
>>
>>53903752
Admittedly, sometimes active converters are really small. I have a USB->PS/2 adapter that looks like there's just a slightly fat USB plug with a wire coming out and going to a PS/2 jack. Similarly, a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable will look like it's just a cable, but there's an active converter chip in the HDMI end of it.

>>
>>53903936
might be dhcp issue. try giving all devices an IP manually.
>>
>>53903936
Maybe you've minimized your network traffic too much. Try pinging the router and see if it still disconnects while pinging.

I remember one school wifi that kept kicking me off after about 20 minutes of inactivity. I wrote a script that got the gateway IP and sent it a ping every couple minutes.

>>53903954
That is an active converter. Given the shape of the case it's made by the same guys who made my composite to VGA box. These guys could seriously charge considerably more for what they're making. It's cheap Chinese shit but it's darn good.
>>
>>53903978
Both windows. When his laptop is connected, both connections work fine. When his is disconnect, mine starts dropping.

It kinda is that his laptop prevent mine from dropping.

I am putting a computer together and I can't tell whether Skylake is a meme or if 'Skylake is a meme' is a meme. I tried lurking and looking at other sites but I'm retarded. I also like Windows 7 and don't know about the whole botnet thing but I guess Microsoft won't be supporting 7 for Skylake anymore and I don't know what a DX12 is or why I should care about it and I am fucking confused.

Windows 7 and 4690K or Windows 10 and 6600K? Please help me.
>>
>>53904084
haswell performs slightly better than skylake

skylake is more "future-proof"

skylake builds will be forced to go with dx12/windows10 by july 2017

so, basically, if you don't care about future proofing(upgrading down the road), and don't want to use windows 10 ever, then go with haswell.

>>53904128
I upgrade so rarely 'upgrade' means an entire new computer. I guess I get to keep Windows 7 then.

>>
>>53904208
yeah just pay with bitcoins and use the russian server.
>>
>>53904084
Skylake costs more and currently doesn't match Haswell's performance on desktop. It's more valuable on laptop though due to power efficiency.

DirectX 12 is far more efficient than DX11, and new games will support it. It'll let Win10 machines play these games with better graphics and make them run more smoothly. Of course if Lord Gaben gets his way, Vulkan will be the winner, and that won't be tied to OS version so you can use it with any OS.

>>53904128
How can they force this? If I have a DVD with Windows 7 on it, I can install that in a year from now on anything it will run on today.

What does the kernel panic say? Take a picture of the message or something. When it panics it usually doesn't write it to disk because it's in an unknown state and attempting to write a file might corrupt things.

EHCI is USB 2.0. xHCI is USB 3.0 but also handles 2.0 and 1.1 devices. Win7 can apparently still do xHCI on Skylake, but not EHCI. You should still be able to use all USB devices, just not boot and install Win7 from a USB stick.

So long as you have a PS/2 keyboard or mouse to use, sure. It won't support USB anything during setup. Otherwise you might need to remove the drive and try to perform the first stage of the install on another computer, then put it back and pray it boots up on the different hardware.

I don't see anything crashy in this, these all look like normal messages. Then again, this is a log file, and panic messages often don't go in there. Usually the system flips to VT 1 and dumps panic messages to the console. You might need to disable auto reboot on panic to see anything. And of course if your video driver is fucky and doesn't allow switching back to textmode, it won't display anything.

Here's one I couldn't really find on the net.

I have an iGPU and an R9 270 paired with a processor that supports both VT-d and VT-x. The idea was to have GNU/Linux as a host OS and to virtualize Windows 7 which would be used for a vast array of software that doesn't work natively in GNU/Linux and for graphically intensive video games.

All of the solutions with PCI passing are completely useless since at that point it's almost akin to dual booting so I was wondering what is the best way to have W7 running under GNU/Linux (as a window I can move around in a DE or as a fullscreen application) and not to bottleneck it hard. Could the host OS allocate a small amount of VRAM for itself? Is there at least a way to pipe the video from the passed GPU to the host GPU in a case where I'd opt for VGA passthrough?

I'm running a three screen configuration, something that an iGPU is not suited for, especially since it doesn't have it's own video memory. Getting a second GPU is out of the question since the motherboard I already own only has one PCIe port.

not that accurate tl;dr of this would be
>how to virtualize W7 under GNU/Linux, make it use host's GPU and not bottleneck it too much?

Thanks to any good willed anon that offers help.

The PSU is the one thing that you should never skimp on, as it can totally fuck you over.

>>
>>53905500
Bad idea. For one thing, PSUs turn on and off based on a couple pins on the mobo connector. So you'd be hotwiring your second PSU every time you turn on the PC. I'm not sure how good an idea it is to connect the two together like that, given that it's not meant to link 2 power supplies together.

I assume that the 2 plugs on there are just wired together rather than powering different parts. If that's the case more power than is intended might be passing through there from the second PSU trying to power other PC parts through the wiring of the first PSU. If it's different parts, then you basically have 2 banks of power 2 separate things are drawing from, and you can't go over the limit on either.

Also, don't get a shitty cheapass PSU. If it blows, it could connect 120 volts to what's supposed to be 5 volts.

>>53905599
You can't install drivers before you install Windows. You'd have to slipstream them on the disc. Normally you can insert a USB stick to load drivers after setup loads from the disc, but that isn't going to be easy with no USB.

>>53905629
Yep -- it backs up the whole thing.

BTW, check out Link2SD. It requires a second partition on your SD card, but it's more flexible and efficient than moving apps to the SD. Moving to SD always seems to make apps take up more space total, results in one cryptoloop mount per app, only works on apps that support it, and may break some functionality. Link2SD just chucks the files into your ext2 partition and creates symlinks. It works with everything that isn't involved in early boot, makes one mount total, can move the whole app, and doesn't add to the size of an app.

Many mobos don't have floppy controllers either, and Win10 won't use a floppy controller if it's present.

The ones that do have floppy controllers have shite support for them in BIOS. I got a board a few years ago where the only options were no floppy or one 1.44M floppy. I wanted to use an old dual 3.5/5.25" drive so I could retrieve data from some old disks I had. I ended up finding a Linux kernel command line option to tell it to ignore BIOS saying there's just a 3.5" drive and talk to the controller like it has both. It worked great.

You can get them cheap on Newegg. You only need one or the other. Might be slightly annoying with just a keyboard or just a mouse, but it's just for setup and you can do everything with either.

Mice are cheaper. Click the accessibility icon and get the on screen keyboard to use for the text entry parts like CD key, hostname and username.

Keyboard is probably easier. Use tab to move between controls and space to activate the selected one.

use your medion tablet to download the latest CM stable for the nexus 7 tablet (https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Devices#vendor=%22Google%22;type=%22tablet%22;)

copy it to the microsd card, and put it back in the Nexus 7

the first problem is such: Write a non-fruitful function drawEquitriangle(someturtle, somesize) which calls drawPoly from the previous question to have its turtle draw a equilateral triangle.
This is what I have written from the previous question it refers to
 import turtle

def drawPoly(t, num_sides, side_length):
for i in range(num_sides):
t.forward(side_length)
t.left(360/num_sides)

wn = turtle.Screen()
wn.bgcolor('lightgreen')

corrie = turtle.Turtle()
corrie.color('hotpink')
corrie.pensize(3)

drawPoly(corrie, 8, 50)

wn.exitonclick()

and this is the second problem: Extend your program above. Draw five stars, but between each, pick up the pen, move forward by 350 units, turn right by 144, put the pen down, and draw the next star. You’ll get something like this (note that you will need to move to the left before drawing your first star in order to fit everything in the window)

and this is what I have written:
import turtle

def drawStar(t):
for i in range(5):
t.forward(100)
t.left(216)

wn = turtle.Screen()
wn.bgcolor('lightgreen')

corrie = turtle.Turtle()
corrie.color('hotpink')
corrie.speed(6)

for i in range(5):
drawStar(corrie)
corrie.penup()

In the first question I am stumped in a sense that I don't really understand the question. Am I supposed to be creating a function within another function? And for the second question I'm just having trouble moving it so that everything fits in the screen.

Here is the link for the exercises I'm working with for reference: http://interactivepython.org/runestone/static/thinkcspy/Functions/thinkcspyExercises.html

I'm sorry if I come off as completely retarded, this is the second week of classes and I have absolutely no background in programming or scripting or anything. Thanks for the help!!

Download official Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft's website (google it).

Download the Windows 7 USB Download Tool, use it to format the USB and copy the Windows 10 ISO files over and set up the bootable details.

Download Microsoft Toolkit from the official MDL thread (or check the hashes and get an untouched version off a torrent site). Use it to inject a key into the Windows 10 installation then install AutoKMS.

Done.

I dont have problems with any other streaming service, only with twitch.
Its not uBlock Origin or uMatrix because if i disable them the same thing happens.

Apparently its not only my PC but my phone too.

Livestreamer has the same problem.

Pretty much, that's as good as you're gonna get I think.

What was the audio codec in use? It might not agree with MKV, causing the audio to not play.

Another thing you could try is re-encoding the video (ffmpeg/Handbrake) which might re-create the timestamp data allowing the video to be seeked through without crashing. Keep the original though.

5-6 bit display with dithering: This is the most common shitty TN panel. 6 bits would be 2^6=64 shades of each primary color (red, green, blue) it can display. You'll see some banding or dither artifacts in smooth gradients. These are typically acceptable for gaming and movies as the artifacts usually aren't terribly visible. Of course if you see this sort of thing and it bothers you, move up.

8 bit: Sensible IPS panel. Can correctly display 2^8=256 shades of each primary color. This is the typical 24 or 32 bit color depth on your PC. (24 bit = 8 bits for each color; 32 bit = 24 bit plus a transparency channel used for mixing layers.) Anything above this probably won't yield any improvement for most tasks.

10 bit: Expensive IPS panel, typically for doing digital art work. These require special drivers, a video card that supports 10 bit color, and software that supports 10 bit output. Otherwise you'll get 8 bit. In practice, this will be limited to Photoshop and some video players if you download anime in 10 bit color.

8 bit plus 2 bit FRC dithering: Better than 8 bit but cheaper than 10 bit panels. Again, this requires 10 bit output from the PC, so the same caveats apply. However, this monitor uses an 8 bit panel, and displays 10 bit color by very quickly flashing between adjacent shades, similar to how a 5-6 bit panel displays 8 bit color. In practice it looks nearly as nice as a proper 10 bit panel, but with some minor artifacting in smooth gradients.

Also, cheapass mice are about 5 bucks on Newegg. I know they aren't great, but they're better than nothing, which is what you have now. Should be perfectly sufficient for shitposting, but you'll want something better if you game. Still, makes a good backup for when your real mouse bites the dust.

Memtest86+. There's a version of it on the UBCD, as well as many Linux CDs. Let it run a good while and see if it shows errors.

You might try playing with the timings in BIOS if there are errors. Slow it down slightly. Some mobos don't work well with some RAM at quite full speed. Or of course you might just have defective RAM.

>>53908834
A PC can recognize RAM, but then when it stores stuff in it at certain locations, under certain conditions it corrupts it. Memtest86 tries to find any problem spots in your RAM. You can then identify which stick it's in from the address and the capacities (or the stick address map you can ask it to show you in one of the menus).

The BIOS/EFI will boot over USB 3/2/1/whatever. But once Windows 7 setup initializes the USB system (instead of using the BIOS/EFI handler) all USB devices that are missing drivers will stop functioning.

Soooo, if you have a USB keyboard plugged into your machine, and you don't have the driver for either the keyboard (weird ass keyboards) or the USB controller (such as Skylake USB3) integrated into the installer, you will lose your keyboard.

im just following what the user guide told me to do. The computer recognizes it as a bootable CD and attempts to launch it. Do I have a misconception here?
>>
>>53909982
According to ASUS's product page
https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M5A99FX_PRO_R20/
the DirectKey button is to be used when the PC is in standby. Pressing it while the machine is running is a very bad thing to do.

You really need to hammer the DEL key during POST to get into the BIOS.

>>53910032
No, it's not recognizing it as a bootable CD, it's recognizing that there's a CD in the drive. You're really just booting off of your hard drive and getting the HP recovery options.

You can't access the BIOS via a CD. That's a myth (or meme, whatever).

>>53910032
Link to the user guide plz?

Orrrr, what are you really trying to do here? Do you just want BIOS access? Boot a Live Linux CD/USB, put it to sleep, press the DirectKey button.
>>
>>53910067
yes I only use the directkey during standby. using the DEL key does not get me to BIOS
>you are really just booting off of your hard drive not the CD
ok this makes some sense. I was under the impression that you "installed" the bios via the CD.

let me play around with it a bit
>>
>>53910094
The BIOS is kind of a permanent component. You never install a BIOS (well, you can via desoldering/soldering a different chip to your mobo), you can only update/flash it with a newer version.

Is your keyboard plugged directly into the motherboard's USB port? You're not using a KVM or PS/2>USB converter?
>>
>>53910116
From the user manual M5A99FX_PRO_R2.0_V3, page 24:

When the system is on and you press the DirectKey button, your system will shut down. Press the DirectKey button again or the Power-on button to reboot and enter the BIOS directly.

It also says this button can be disabled in the BIOS, lol.

So my mom had an Amazon Fire Phone because she got a good deal, and she decided to upgrade to a much better phone and gave me hers. It was only then that I realized how much of a piece of shit this thing is. Basically every app worth talking about seems to be from Google Play, but Google Play doesn't support Fire Phone. I can't even download any emulators on this thing. I can't pirate games. NOBODY supports the Amazon Fire Phone!

So I try going through online tutorials to make it "think" it's an Android instead. The tutorials are straightforward enough, except I have a problem regarding the APK files. On the ES File Explorer, I have downloaded the correct APK files. Problem is that my phone doesn't know what an APK file even is. I can't really "open it" as anything because whatever I open it as is either nonsense or not functional. So I guess I have to download an APK installer. So I try looking for it and...nothing. No matter what I seem to do, I can't get this piece of crap to actually get me anywhere! It has no idea what an APK file is.

So aside from the "just get a new phone" option, is there ANY way I can make my Fire Phone do anything? Make it download Android Apps, or the Google Play store, or anything? I almost think all those tutorials online are outdated at this point and Amazon selfishly patched the way how.

Hey, /sqt/. I am building a home Xeon server for the following reasons:

>SMB shares
>Tonido (dropbox clone)
>Plex for media, 2-3 clients will load using their own codecs, but 1-2 clients over the internet will need transcoding
>Possibly Subsonic
>Torrentbox
>Depending on the placement/size of the box, possible passthrough to a low-end GPU for an HTPC VM to my home theatre
>Working on network rendering my video work to make use of the hyperthreading

All-in-all, just an all-around multipurpose server, ranging from small workloads to medium-high, depending on what I am actively doing. The Xeon model I am using is a Xeon E3-1240v3 that I snagged on eBay from a webhosting company that was liquidating their assets, they claimed the CPU had not been used in large workloads.

Anyway, my dilemma is this: I am focusing on minimizing power usage. I do not need a ton of space, except when using it to render my content from Adobe, so I'm probably going to go with (at most) 3x2TB storage drives. So the question comes down to the power supply. Seeing as this build will not use more than 300W, I could imagine, should I still go with a Gold rated PSU? Since it is just a home server, I don't believe I need a Platinum. Now, I can afford it, but there are no Gold-rated PSUs that are under 400w that are a reputable brand. They are all Bronze or just plain 80+ for that wattage, and so I would be forced to buy a 500w for ~$75 for Gold. Since I am in the process of building and want to be 95% sure that I am taking all options into account before buying, I figured I would ask here since a lot of you have your own servers in use.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks /g/.

To add to this, I guess what I'm trying to figure out is this:

If my max power usage for all my hardware is, let's say 175w. My PSU, hypothetically, is 500w. Does this mean that, at max hardware load, not power, will I be pulling 200 watts from the wall, or does it mean I will only pull more when my PSU gets to 90% load?

The Dell Precision laptops models m4500 and m6500 use socket LGA 1366 for their CPUs.

You can read that here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_Precision

Now...my question is if it is possible to install a desktop Xeon CPU in these laptops. There is a low power version of the LGA 1366 Xeons available with the model # of L5630

http://ark.intel.com/products/47927

Could you install this CPU in a laptop? The TDP is only 5 watts over the CPUs the laptop shipped with.

The only issue I can see if the BIOS not allowing it in a way similar to the desktop workstations complaining about the x5600 series Xeons sometimes.

lol... I seriously doubt it. Then again I don't see much reason it shouldn't work apart from BIOS whitelists -- the chipsets and sockets are the same, and it should be able to handle it in terms of power and heat.

I doubt anyone has tried this. Give it a shot and write something up about it if you have a bit of cash to blow on something that may or may not work. If it doesn't work, you should be able to get a workstation board and use the Xeon in that.

>>53902855
OS? If it's Windows, next time it does it, run the command
powercfg /lastwake
. That will make output like this:
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 1
Wake Source [0]
Type: Fixed Feature
Power Button

That example from my laptop is saying that the reason it woke up last was that the power button was pressed. Whatever it lists as the reason, go look for in Device Manager and see if there's a setting on the Power tab for it to disallow it waking up the computer.

Also see Event Viewer, system log. See if there are any interesting entries from "Power Troubleshooter".

For Linux, check dmesg. For OSX, I forget the command but there's something similar to what powercfg /lastwake does on Windows.

Fuck sakes, this really has become unobtainable. Here, have an old version that should still work well. I found it in a backup of an old external HDD I had:

It woke up because of the power button. Odd. Um... try disconnecting the power button from your mobo and see if that cures it. Maybe the button's faulty somehow. Apart from that, all I can think of is some electrical weirdness causing it to think the button was pressed.
>>
I asked in /ic/, but that's a slow board, and I have a feeling this question might be more /g/-related. It's in that weird grey area.

Anyway. I currently have a concept artist for a website. I need to find a website designer. I've googled for freelance website designers, but couldn't seem to find a particular database for them.

Does anyone have recommendations for particular designers, or a website that will help me find designers? And yes, this is obviously paid work.
>>
>>53911342
eLance maybe. Do be sure to check out the examples of past work that people link to when they make a proposal. Sometimes you get total idiots there.

Will a Thinkpad R61 be enough for today's computing? I just want to watch youtube, netflix and do some web development.

For what you want to do, a Core 2 Duo should cut it. Battery life won't be spectacular and it'll be heavy compared to something more modern that would do the same though.

I've got a Dell E6400 from around that time period. Thing runs quite well and would be quite enough for what you're looking to do. It's got a slightly better CPU than you'd probably be getting -- I forget the model number but it's 2.4 GHz.

Good, it sounded like crazy talk to me. They almost never put desktop sockets or chips in laptops apart from some Pentium 4 luggables.

Moving from a mid tower to a full and need to replace my barely fitting 10" sata cables that connect my disks. What length tends to be right for mobo-3.5 and will I need something longer for the 5.25 bays?
>>
>>53911634
Varies by case? Run a piece of string between them and leave a reasonable bit of slack. Take it out and measure how long it is.

Don't have the case yet? Find references in a picture of it. Like, look at a bay, measure it in pixels and measure the same height bay in your PC. Now measure other distances and multiply by the same scale factor. It's a guesstimate, but it should help you select.

Foobar2000 is using 7-8% CPU playing MP3 files. This seems a bit high for such a simple task, even on this little netbook. Do I have some setting that's made it less efficient, or is my CPU really that shit?

It's an AspireOne with an AMD C-60 APU. I know it's shit, but this still sounds a bit on the high side.

Don't forget to check your PSU cables as well, not just the data cables. My power cables were actually too short to connect to my DVD and BD drive, so I had to get extensions when I got my new case.

Have a question of my own, it's kind of complicated, but at the most basic level, I can't use Windows 8 and Windows 10 on my computer. Whenever I install either of them, it just keeps freezing on the startup screen, when you see the Windows logo with the spinning circle below. The computer locks hard, I can only force it to shut down with the power button. Anybody know what could cause this?
>>
>>53912111
Drivers are the usual culprit, chipset and GPU in particular. What hardware do you have in this thing? Have you tried safe mode?
>>
>>53912111
Have you tried installing to a different disk? That's all that comes to mind right away
>>
>>53912139
>>53912111
Wait, are you saying it hard locks booting the installer, or after it's installed when it tries to boot from the HDD for the first time?

Are older Android versions (e.g. 4.4) still secure / kept up to date?

Want to build Android from source since the CyanogenMod for my phone lost support like a year ago. Now I have the choice between a shitload of Android versions, but only older ones get official kernels n stuff. Since I don't want to install half of the kernel modules off of someone's github, i wondered if older versions are acceptable from a security point of view.

Couldn't find anything on xda-dev or google, so I hope someone here knows

Okay, so here's the situation:
I'd like to learn Windows Development using the WinAPI, mainly for development of video game hacks and perhaps some other small applications.
I already know C and some x86 ASM, however it seems like I will need to use C++ ro make full use of the API.
So I'm wondering if there are actually some good books on Windows development (preferably using C++) and if there is some kind of reference for the API.
All I can find is some unreadable clusterfuck on MSDN.
Also, do I need to use Visual Studio, or is CodeBlocks also a viable alternative?
I've done some tests and it seems to work fine even for basic GUI applications, but I want to make sure that I don't run into a wall later on.
>>
>>53912128
Yeah, safe mode did work. Drivers were tricky, when I tried to install the chipset driver in safe mode it gave me an "Unspecified Error". Using an Intel i5-3570k. Could the GPU drivers really cause a lock-up like that? I hadn't installed any yet. Also, Microsoft Edge doesn't work in safe mode for some reason.

>>53912139
I did, same problem, sadly. The thing is, all my other disks are pretty huge and thus I have them in GPT. I read you can actually install on GPT using UEFI and shit, but that actually killed my Win7 installation too.

>>53912150
The latter, but the issue repeats. The only way to get it to boot into Win10 is safe mode.

You do not need C++ in general. OLE is C++, though you can muddle through with C by passing 'this' pointers manually and so forth. Still I'd say use C++ unless you hate how much it bloats your exes compared to C -- you don't need to write OOP style code to use it, you can write the same as you would in C and toss an object around here and there as needed. It's also useful for STL containers like Vectors and Lists.

Books... I rather like Petzold's Programming Windows.

CodeBlocks works, as does plain old MinGW or even OpenWatcom. OpenWatcom seems to produce slightly tighter and faster asm than MinGW last I tested, but that was some years ago.

The only real walls you'll run into from not using VisualStudio are:
- occasional 3rd party lib that ships with VS .lib files but not MinGW .a/.o files so you have to compile it yourself
- some instructions assuming VS that you have to adapt to MinGW or OpenWatcom
- if you ever want to use MFC, you'll have to move to VS

Where do you get the updates from (google play or does the os itself notify you)?
I'll run it kinda freetard style without gApps, but idk if i need them to get android updates. Thanks for helping

Have you never used an android my franon?
it will notify you when it's ready.
>>
>>53912667
Well i used a version of CyanogenMod that was discontinued for my phone, and CM only gets system updates from CMupdater (which only ever happened once due to discont.). So no, i never used vanilla android. Where do updates in vanilla come from/what "repositories" does it use?

Has anyone actually EVER been charged for downloading copyrighted material, like on Usenet or file hosters?

I know there have been plenty of cases with torrents, earlier with limewire and so on, but the technicality in all cases was that people were actually UPLOADING the movies/songs as well, however tiny the fragments were.

I know there is always a first time, just interested in the history...
>>
>>53912945
The fact that uploading is the only thing that gets you caught is a myth. The issue is that when you're in a swarm, your IP is plain for the world to see. All that Lawyer McGee has to do is add the torrent to his client and look at your IP. Provided you don't use a VPN, he knows your IP, plain and simple.

With file hosts such as rapidgator and shit, they usually have provisions guaranteeing a degree of anonymity and such, and just getting an IP is an arduous process, which most legal companies can't be bothered with for a normal copyright claim. I assume that's how it works, anyway.

Details... Are you using UEFI or legacy/BIOS/CSM boot? / Is your disk GPT or MBR partitioned? What boot manager are you using, GRUB? What does the entry for booting Windows look like?

I'll assume you're using BIOS/MBR/GRUB. I take it you have an entry that looks something like this:
title "Windows":
root (hd0,1)
chainloader +1

Take the 1 from hd0,1 (or hd0,msdos1 as the case may be). That's your partition number. Look at your partition table in fdisk. Is there a * next to that partition in the "Boot" column, and no * for boot on any other partition? (If not, use the A command to toggle the boot flag on partitions until this is the only one listed for Boot.) Is that number your System Reserved partition? (If not, change your GRUB config to make it.)

Assuming your GRUB config and partition table check out, the next place to look is your Windows BCD. Boot up a Windows 8 install DVD (Win10 will work as well for repairing Win8). As soon as you have control, disregard the usual menus and press shift+F10 to pop up a command prompt. From there:
diskpart
list vol
exit

Note the volumes it lists. Find your usual C: drive in there. It will most likely be D: or some other letter if you booted from a USB Windows installer. Now do
bcdboot D:\Windows

Where D: is the drive from the last step. This will rebuild your BCD. Now exit out of Windows Setup and see if you can boot it.

Well depends on the country I guess.

Here in yuropoor it's really only the process of uploading that gets you fined. All charges are made for distributing copyrighted material.

Because there are tons of torrent charges made but none for file hosters. There HAVE been cases where uploaders to the file hosters have been busted though.

I think there is a law for plain downloading as well, but the fine is soooo much lower than for distributing that it's not worth it for Lawyer McGee to even think about prying the IPs from the hosters.
See the mega upload bust, no one has been charged either and for this they wouldn't even have to get a judge and shit.
