I bought a desktop computer so I don't really game on my laptop anymore.
I do Photoshop, create word documents, use excel, powerpoint, watch movies, etc.
Also how will Ubuntu impact battery life? Will I be seeing huge decreases?

using microsoft office documents can be troublesome with ubuntu from my experience. maybe someone here can prove me wrong. i felt like battery life was reduced but i didn't run tests and haven't viewed benchmarks, that info is probably easy to find.
in general i really like ubuntu and if you're curious and have an open machine you have nothing to lose. you're going to have to do a lot of googling at first to figure out how to do... anything. but once you get familiar with some terminal commands and see how easy googling the one you need is i will bet you will think it is a superior way of doing things.

There are battery managers that you can install that help with battery life. Apparently, they can sometimes make them better than with Windows, but I'm not sure how true that is, since I haven't bothered trying them because I just leave mine plugged in all the time due to the battery being dead.

I used it for weeks, then for whatever reason that big update happened that uninstalled speccy and other programs, from then on any time I wanted to run any program I had to manually select as admin, from any user account.
It would also frequently break my solidworks installs, various versions and compatability modes were tried with removing and adding security packages reported to help the issue, but reverting back to 7 was just easier

As for if it's bad. It depends if you are cool with sharing usage statistics and shit with Microsoft or not. Personally I'm not aware any benefits of 10 over 7 or 8.1. It's not bad, but it's not good either. It's just Windows that sends some (supposedly anonymized) data to Microsoft, but it is the future considering Microsoft has been saying that new hardware might not be competitable with older Windows versions.

aside from movies, none of those work properly.
There's a ton of compatibility issues beteween MS office / Open office, especially once you get to more advanced features like citations, cross-references etc. Tbh I would just dual boot.
My laptop has a windows 7 / Mint dual boot and I love it. I don't play video games but I have a lot of specialty software for work that only runs on windows

My only use for Windows is on a dedicated gaming machine.
I already have it behind a firewall / NAT, and the machine has no webcam or microphone or anything else. I do nothing interesting on it, not even game purchases (I buy them elsewhere and transfer).
Is there any reason *not* to move to Windows 10 on this machine? For DirectX 12 and nothing else, basically.
