Can someone explain to me what is this meme about nvidia videocards being too hot and burning down the house?
Fermi.
These days it's AMD causing fires.

Fermi cards.
The AMD cards are not actually housefire, they are similar to old Kepler cards. The "new" Radeons are like a GK110 with 1200 Mhz sold as a 980, the Furys are 4000 shader GK110 with HBM1.
I heard they improved a little on chip yield but thats all, no new chips.

Old Fermi series cards (read: GTX480) had low yields, dissapointing performance and ran incredibly hot. 100C was considered acceptable operating temperatures.
