I had sansa clip with rockbox. It was nice, great battery life, powered my headphones well and sounded nice.

Then the headphone jack died, just like it died on my ipods, and phones(main reason I got standalone mp3 player in the first place, fuckng nexuses, htc's samsungs are all suspicable to starting to randomly skip tracks and calling people).

After sansa got fiio x1 and holy shit, I expected to be paying for solid construction and for brand name, but nope, best audio quality I've ever had from a tiny pocket device.

>>53822962
Pretty much this.
Sometimes it's noticable if you have a good setup, eg atleast 500 dropped on it, on some tracks that benefit from it, but mostly FLAC is great for storage, if you buy music and listen to it for atleast 3-5 years.
Just found my old HDD. All mp3's sounded like rubbish, peaked all the time, glitches etc but FLAC's were fine. Especially noticable if I had an mp3 and flac of the same album for some reason

The m8 has got a pretty good dac, on of the best on the smartphone market. It depends on how much money you got to spend. If you are willing to pay to get the extra battery device you should consider getting an x3ii (400$ for the x5ii is not worth imo) but you probably won't hear a big difference, maybe none. Besides that FIIO still doesn't support opus if that's important.

Does the m8 got a micro sd slot?

Does anyone know of a android music player that I can get without using google play services where I can change the default action?

Like if I select a song, it will start playing that song.
I don't like that.
I want it to be added to my queue, so when the song is over it will be played. It is easier to skip a song than it is to get back to where the previous song was and I don't want to interrupt everything.

I do have a 30GB iPod 5.5 that I just recently had to replace the battery on. It's 2016. Why would anyone carry an extra device just for music? Do people just not know their phones play music?
>>
Phone, because I have to use a smartphone for work.

I would be happier with a dumbphone and a dedicated mpd.

Smartphone running SailfishOS.

I use mpd on it, with SMPC as the front-end. I use autoplay.py to provide radio-like functionality that tracks my listening preferences. (I synchronize the database with my host PC)

Sound quality isn't the best but it's convenient enough for me not to care.

Xperia smartphone with cyanogenmod's music app. The battery can take it.

iPod Classic 160 GB with Rockbox.

If it ever dies I'll consider getting a phone with removable SD card to play my music. Shied away from that because I didn't want to sacrifice phone battery life for the ability to call people in an emergency (have a car crash? Can't call an ambulance because you listened to music for 3 hours on the highway) but with higher capacity batteries and maybe dedicated sound chips like in the Nexus 5 this has become a viable option.
