Blackberry PRIV, OpenPandora, and most recently, the GPD WIN just smashed it's indiegogo funding.

The pic is old, it seems to be shipping with the upgraded z8550 instead of 8500, which is to have improved heat and graphics

What do you guys use this for? Can it connect to the internet like a phone? Are the specs good enough to play vidya?

If I can emulate games on this and use my steam controller with it this shit might be worthwhile I guess.
>>
>>53793881
>why did they die

For the exact reason your phone and handheld game consoles don't run on an Atom CPU. ARM is still currently the most energy efficient mobile CPU architecture.
>>
>>53793881
the UI were totally not optimized for the small screens and touch interfaces. they were a great experiment.

something like how the early laptops had multiple disk drives, huge speakers, and every connector available, these UMPC tried to pack all the contemporary laptop features and full desktop software into a package that wasn't really didn't make good use of them.

this. It's entirely the UI. Using a desktop UI on a tiny device with a half-ass mouse isn't fun. UIs designed for small size are always better, whether physical button navigation like blackberry's or a touchscreen like iphone/android

I don't know what they originally retailed for (I think it was a few thousand) but with modern hardware, they would probably cost around $500. Maybe more depending on markup.

Also, this adapter in my ux caused the trackpoint to glitch. No idea why other than the fact that the adapter and the trackpoint connect to the mobo with the same cable. You can grab a Samsung Q1 Ultra, usually for less than $100 (but I got mine for $53) on ebay. As long as you don't mind having the slowest 'modern' cpu ever made, they aren't bad machines, especially since you can cram 2gb in there and upgrade the wireless to ac or throw in any 1.8" pata hdd / ssd

Your best bet for a modern umpc is a cherry trail tablet and a keyboard dock. Something like an asus transformer or cube iwork 10 flagship. I just wish docking keyboards were available for 8 inch models.

>>53803103
They do now. With cherry trail, they are on 64bit uefi bootloaders (instead of that cancer 32bit uefi) so they can run nearly any distro or windows newer than xp, though drivers before 8.1 or 10 might be hard to find. Have you never heard of a bluetooth keyboard?

Just for reference, just how terrible is the CPU on one of these?
(I'm seeing 600mhz, but I can't translate that into practical performance such as "oh, you could run morrowind at shit settings", so what I'm really seeking is examplse of performance in programs)
>>
>>53803176
As long as you crutch it with a fast ssd / hdd, a ton of ram, and a lightweight os, it really isn't that bad. Though, every pc will be fast in this scenario.

It's fast enough for older XP games (so basically win 2000 era or older).

Just for you, I will try morrowind though to see what happens, though keep in mind I will be using wine. If I install XP it will probably work just fine. I wont be home for another five hours though and I won't be able to try until then.

And why are you telling me that you know more about my device than I do?
>>
>>53803413
Not him, but I'll throw some examples out for curiosity.
- 4chan
- Gmail (not the HTML one for slow PCs, the shitty javascript one.)
- YouTube (240p acceptable, 360p ideal, either way this is probably out of reach based on my own experiences with outdated hardware. If functional via hax instead of the main website, note that.)
- eBay
- Twitter
>>
>>53803413
I'm speaking about facts. If all you do is shitposting on /g/ with 10FPS browsing experience then you should not lie about capabilities of this little piece of shit. 4chan is not a modern website. Modern, typical website is for example msn.com. Try to use it with flash and javascript enabled. Then speak about usability, dumb cunt.
You can't even use two programs at once on this device, not even mentioning multiple tabs in a modern secure browser.
Also

I never actually posted this fact ITT, but I don't have a mechanical drive in my device. After I removed >>53802885 from my ux, I installed it in my sq1u.

I'm not going to enable flash because no 'modern' websites actually use it. I haven't used flash in years on my desktop.

But hell, now you've convinced me to make some webms to prove you wrong. It's one thing to assume someone is lying if you can prove them wrong, but it's another to just make up assumptions that go against stuff that has already been posted. I understand being stubborn, but two differnet people have already said that you're wrong. I've posted old pictures of my devices running windows 10 with no issues and windows 7 with aero enabled. They are slower than a lot of shit but just because you can't set up a pc worth a damn does not mean that the rest of us need an i7 just load two instances of internet explorer.

It isn't performance nor is it age (they weren't popular even when they were new).
It's:
Cost, especially when new
Lack of advertisement/knowledge of the device
Niche use case over a laptop or PDA (tied into cost too)

Large swathes of the population don't bother with laptops anymore, that doesn't mean those are redundant.

Also, it was even less powerful than those ancient Core Solo CPUs. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=905&cmp[]=614&cmp[]=2326

firefox and unity are laggy on a good day. I'm surprised it was able to handle everything as well as it did. MSN and Yahoo are by far the worst sites to load with all scripts and zero adblocking.

but no really, this game is actually running on the q1-u.

It's playable, barely, but it works. With my specific device, it's going to be pretty much impossible to play as is though since the mouse and the left half of the keyboard are both on the left side. You can look and you can move but not at the same time and since it takes both thumbs to use the mouse, rebinding keys wouldn't work anyway. With an external it's a bit better.

It's running XP, gog GOTY edition, 640x480, all settings on low. Maybe with more tweaking or some overclocking it might be better but I suspect it will just drop in combat or any big cities.

Strategy games should be a lot better than anything first person.

Honestly I'm impressed, it looks like with optimisation (if you actually wanted to play it rather than just tech-demo) it'd be finishable, especially if Morrowind has a modification thing for outdated PCs like Oblivion does.
(Incidentally, if that is a fallout title, Oblivion+Oldblivion might well be worth a look if you want some keks, although my recollection was that on a GMA950 + C2D it was pretty crap.)

GTA 3 would make an impressive tech-demo if it runs well. Or Half-Life 1 (pretty much guaranteed to run.)
