What do laptop screens need to be connected to to run?

I took apart an old junk laptop thinking to turn it into a sort of all-in-one for the hell of it. So far it works fine when plugged into a monitor, but the screen doesn't work. The video wire is plugged into it, and I've checked thoroughly to make sure all the plugs are seated well, but the backlight doesn't turn on and nothing shows up on the screen.

Am I missing something stupid? Does it need to be grounded somehow?

My CPU has 16 PCIe lanes
My MoBo has 2 x PCIe 3.0 x16 Slots
I am using a GTX 970 in one of my 3.0 slots.

What would happen if I put a 950 in a PCIe adaptor and put it in the other 3.0 slot?

I'm also using a wifi card in one port, is that subtracting from my GPU performance since my CPU only supports 16 lanes? I didn't know what this specification really meant until recently and I still don't fully get it.

>>
>>53726021
What CPU are you using? A 6700k for instance has 20 PCIe lanes for this situation, 16 for the GPU, 4 for everything else.

In your case, your WiFi card is using 1 lane, GPU 8 lanes, 950 whatever it would want.

If I remember correctly, graphics cards tend to only go by 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 lanes. They tend not to have settings for 12 or 10 or 14 lanes, although you may be able to set it yourself.

You can think of lanes as just a set amount of bandwidth.

My PC is in front of a window. Outside is my front lawn and the street. I was thinking of buying a small camera to put in the window somewhere so I can monitor the front my house without leaning over my desk and looking through the blinds all the time. Problem is in my neighborhood there is a rule that we can't put anything in the windows visible from outside except blinds, if you do then you get fined. And I want the camera to be hidden anyway.

I was looking at this small camera and maybe I'd paint it white and try to put in it the window sill so it can't be seen too well:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005E3U5X0/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=

I would connect it to my PC and be able to load up the camera feed and view it whenever, maybe use some motion alert software.

Anyone got any better ideas?
>>
>>53726285
except that is entirely wrong and the pcie lanes the devices use will depend entirely on the pcie slots they're in.

The graphics card will use x16 or x8 if there is another device plugged into the other x16 pcie 3.0 slot.

The samsung 950 pro uses 4 pcie 3.0 lanes for full speed. Anything less will throttle it. The GPU will be fine at pcie 3.0x8.

>>53726429
Well, I have an extension on your idea. Instead of painting it, just install it behind the blinds. It doesn't need to be that tiny and hidden, maybe even get a better quality one. Any old webcam will do. Just cut a tiny ass hole in the blind for the camera to sit behind, maybe find a way to tape the camera to the blind so it's always right behind that hole.

hello /sqt/, I want to build (or buy) a PC:

- small (I'm gonna lug it around by plane)
- fast processor (my work currently maxes out the i7 2630QM in my laptop)
- no gfx card (I give zero fucks)
- as cheap as possible with these constraints

I mix audio and my ideapad can't handle complex tracks (processor gets too hot and audio ends up stuttering). Anyways, I don't think a laptop is appropriate considering the processing power I need.

I haven't custom built a PC in 10y and I know nothing about smaller form factors. What should I get? Any suggestions appreciated.
>>
>>53726371
Try find a second hand Haswell i5 or i7 and socket 1150 motherboard, try to low ball people down to about $200 for them both. People are selling things off pretty cheap now that Skylake and DDR4 are out. Pay more if it comes with RAM. You'll probably need a newer PSU. No point skimping on a PSU only to toast your other components. Keep the grapchics card, case etc.
>>
>>53726667
The only benefit this will give you is accessing things faster on your LAN such as a fileserver. Is this what you are trying to do?
>>
>>53726714
If money is an issue you can get a FX 8350 with a custom cooler and then overclock it. That way you can get the performance you need. Otherwise you can get an i7 4th or 6th generation.

Just pour the money on a good processor and overclocking mobo and you'll be fine.
>>
>>53726702
Umm I wasn't the guy who asked the original question.
>>
>>53726708
I have almost the same Pc as you. The only difference is that I don't have an SSD. However, you might want to get an smaller SSD if you've already got a hdd in order to get a better gpu. A r9 290 or something like that. Also, try to get a K processor. Otherwise it's useless to get an aftermarket cooler if you're not going to overclock it.
>>
>>53726232
I would save and get a I5-6400.

Also save more and get a better GPU.

You dont need a 750W PSU, get a 500W or 650W.

>>53726714
Budget?

Since apparently in whatever you work you use multiple threads/cores you should get something of the 2011 socket (I7-5820k).
But since you dont want to spend on a GPU you should get a I7-6700K so you have a IGPU.
>>
>>53726285
2700k, I don't see the need to upgrade yet. When having 32+ PCI lanes is something I need I'll make a new build.

Guys I know I'm asking a pretty stupid question but I guess that's what this thread is for. I was told by another anon that I could use the OS from these links in this web: http://pastebin.com/raw/CaWSgByZ

I just wanted to know how I would go about installing the OS. Because I'm going to be asked for an activation code. Would I have to then use Dazloader cracking software? And if that works will >>53725720 happen to me?
>>
>>53726701
Ok, so in short don't update the bios and drivers? If I were to do that, atleast with respect to the drivers, wouldn't that mean that my components won't be running at there most efficient?
>>
>>53726980
Download your ISO from here:
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/56439-Windows-7-ultimate-x86-x64-ISO-Download

Also Daz loader from there too.
>>
>>53726980
I don't know about the cracking, but you can avoid that problem by making sure your bios is completely up to date before you begin the process. Bios updates aren't that common
>>
>>53726760
Interesting. I've heard many of the plugins I use have performance problems on AMD processors, but I'll see if it's more than just rumors.

>>53726874
Well I have shekels but I'm just trying to save. Below 1k would be nice. Yes, my work is embarrassingly parallel, mixing large audio projects is a matter of running dozens of plugins in realtime. So I'll look at mobos with the 2011 socket then. I guess the smallest I can go for is mini ITX?

This site should help you to select parts:
http://www.logicalincrements.com/

Just ignore the GPU part since you wont need a good one.
Take in mind, 2011 CPUs dont have a IGPU so you need a GPU.

If you select a 1151(Skylake) CPU you will be able to use a IGPU and wont have to invest more.
I7-6700K is a good alternative to the I7-5820K.

I don't think I'm understanding what's going on. I'll explain what I did. I went the pastebin that you linked me, from there I went to this webpage:http://www.multiup.org/en/mirror/a5b5cae2a2f2c1fd1ec9afd950bbd18f/en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso . Then I downloaded the iso. And now I'm asking on how do I go about installing this without having to buy an activation code.
>>
>>53726754
I'm trying to take greater advantage of a gigabit internet connection on a PC that I can't run physical cable to, plus make use of a stack of obsolete wrt54g routers. Mainly I'm experimenting to see what happens when I try stupid stuff. If I was serious about throughput I'd just get an 802.11ac nic.
>>
>>53727289
Oh, i thought you were asking if the link was safe.

Do you have a USB ready?
Rufus or unetbootin installed?

Make a bootable USB with the ISO with one of those 2 programs.

You can get Daz loader from here:

>>53727371
Cool, I can make a bootable USB. Iwas thnking of the software that windows had uploaded on their page I'll have to find the link first though. So after that boot my pc from the usb, do I just use Daz loader? And also will I be able to update my OS to win10 and not have problems like this anon >>53725720 ? >>
>>53727495
Just finish installing windows and use daz loader.

Then update till you get the W10 notification.

I would advice against it but if you want W10 is up to you.

Also that is a rare problem related to updating your motherboard bios, you wont experience unless you update them.

>I would advice against it but if you want W10 is up to you.
I'm going to be using win 10 just for simplicity, because I won't have to get another OS for another ~10 years. I get the bad feeling that win 7 will stop being supported in a couple of years so to avoid all the hassle I might as well just update now.

That's really impossible to say. However, IIRC recent stress-testing showed that SSDs can survive several hundred Terabytes of data writes. Possibly even 1-2 Petabytes (1000 TB). So unless you were formatting your 500GB SSD every single day, you'd probably never come close to actually killing it.

>>53728285
Yes that is too hot. If you're using a regular PC, buy some thermal compound and apply it as soon as possible.
>>
>>53728285
That's definitely on the warm side for idling, but as long as you're not overheating it should be fine.

>How do I fix this?
Clean any dust that has accumulated on the heatsink, make sure that the fans are operating correctly (e.g. there's nothing stopping them from spinning), make sure that there's nothing blocking the air intake or exhaust. If you're using a desktop, you could replace the cooler or use some thermal paste, but don't try that if it's a laptop or all in one.

>I've noticed slow performance today, could it be the CPU?
If the CPU is showing itself as being maxed out, then yes, otherwise, probably not.

I'm not a bright guy when it comes to internet shit and connections, I barely understand most terms, so hopefully someone can help me with this.

For a while now I've been using FrootVPN to pirate shit, since it was previously free and even afterwards it was pretty cheap, but now it's been bumped up a couple more dollars and I thought I'd look for other VPNs in hopes of spending a few more dollars to get a VPN connection faster than 1/4 of my normal connection.

I found AirVPN and thought it sounded good so I got the three-day trial/plan and got it all installed and connected, only to find my download speed to be completely miserable, not even coming close to a single MB/s. I'm talking like fucking a few B/s.

My normal speed is between 40-50 Mbps, and with Froot it's around 10-ish. Anyone know why AirVPN is doing this?

tl;dr = Tried a new VPN and my speed is shit with them and I don't know why. What are the possible causes?

Get a Linux USB and try using linux for a while

Why? It will run from your USB, not your HDD.

So if the OS or HDD is damaged you wont have problems at all with linux.

Run Memtest to check RAM.

Either they're throttling free trial connections to save bandwidth for paying customers, or it's a shit VPN. Here's a good list you can use to find one that suits your needs:
https://www.privacytools.io/ (ctrl+f spreadsheet, follow the links through -- 4chan won't let me post a direct link)
You want one that doesn't keep IP logs, doesn't block p2p traffic, and is cheap. You should be able to sort on those fields and try them out.

Until very recently I used PrivateInternetAccess, and I found them to be very affordable, and they have superb bandwidth. Only reason I stopped with them is they finally got blacklisted by Netflix, and I'm seeing if there are alternatives that still work.

Someone else may know a better option, as I haven't used windows in years, but at the very least you can do this:
- get an external hard drive large enough to store the entire windows partition, and a USB thumb drive large enough to run a live linux distro (really any will do)
- install a linux distro to a USB
- boot off the live USB into whatever distro you chose (e.g. ubuntu), and start up the terminal
- run "lsblk" and figure out which drive is storing your windows partition, and which is the external hard drive
- run
dd if=/dev/sdX1 of=/dev/sdY1

where you replace X1 and Y1 with whatever letters and numbers you got from the previous step, X1 being the Windows partition, Y1 being the external drive partition
- do whatever on the computer
- once you're ready to write your windows install back, run the same command, only switching the "if" target with whatever the external is called when you plugged it in this time, and the "of" with whatever partition you want to write your windows install to

what's going on: "dd" is just the linux command to write raw binary to/from block devices, like disks. Don't fuck it up (e.g. mix up which is your windows drive and which is your external), or you will lose everything.

you put the sata drivers onto the USB and then select it during installation like you showed in >>53730434
just create a new folder and put the driver files there.

windows 7 cannot talk to the disks because it doesn't know how, so it cannot install itself.

Pretty much anything else for beginners, I want to consume.

Will also accept suggestions for books as long as they're no more than $0.01 per page (anything over that is ridiculously overpriced).

Suggest anything and everything. I'm looking to read thousands of pages worth of stuff.

Pic semi-related. Per page this only costs $0.0048, which means it would have to cost less than this to print. That would mean anything over $0.01 per page would mean copyright owners are getting much more than the cost to print, probably at least twice as much as it costs to print, in pure profits. What is the best backup solution if you operate with a lot of files? (several gigabytes)
Stuff like git and svn is good for tracking small changes, but you have to store a copy of the file for reference, so it uses double the amount of storage needed.

Things like syncthing uses too much cpu because it constantly has to find the server and makes it unusable for mobile use.
Owncloud doesn't track changes and thus any change causes the file to be reuploaded rather than apply the changes.

I want the server-client model. I want something self hosted.
And I want something that is easy enough so I can recommend it to other people.

Is that possible?

The simplest answer is:
So you don't have to write as much code.

Instead of writing (or copying) a block of code 5 times you write it once and call it when you need it.

Its less work and your code is also shorter and easier to read.

Who died in your laptop?
(As in, bad sectors?)
How did your laptop die?
(Water damages? Did it leak badly?)
Basically you need to test your HDD for damages before you want to do something with it.

There is (was) this one website where (semi-)influential/well known people in technology circles would be interviewed about their every-day computing set up, and have lists of like the software they used, etc.

Anyone know what I'm talking at/can point me towards the site?

Oh the HDD works fine, its just the CPU cooling block pulled a standoff through the motherboard at some point and got toasted.
Had no visible solder on the joint and looks to have had nothing, copper heatsink is warped and pulls away on the standoff.

But yeah it works fine, tested already in another laptop.
Make is Western Digital Caviar Black.

A friend of mine is studying and he and I came to the conclusion that Linux is not made for Office work and even WINE is a pain in the ass if you want something to work.

Can someone enlighten me, what we might be doing wrong?
He is studying german language and history and sports as a teaching position.

Why does the Python installer for Windows default to the 32bit version if I'm on a 64bit OS? Am I supposed to use the 32bit version on Windows?
>>
>>53732475
I think there is better library support with the 32bit version or something stupid like that.

You should almost definitely be fine using the 64bit version though, I don't think I've ever had issues with it.

RAMdisk it is.
Any recommended software for windows 7?
I see ImDisk is FOSS. Is it good?
>>
>>53732475
Just a guess here:
But for the installer to be able to run on 32bit systems it needs to be 32bit and has no means to check if you're on 64bit then, hence it defaults to 32bit.

I'll go with 64 then. This just proves once again >windows. My Linux distribution didn't have this problem.

Unless there's a way to sterilize that, I wouldn't touch it.
