Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I typed in the wrong password when I was connecting to my wifi the first time around, and now the keyring in gnome (opensuse) tries the wrong one every time I login and I have to type it in manually.

Does anybody know what the actual program is called, or how to edit the keyring?

Memes aside. The hardest thing is waiting till the compiling is finished. Following the guide isn't more difficult than following Archs guide. But - you need to come with some knowlege about computers.

As you can see, near the top of the article is a GUI keyring management option.

"You can manage the contents of GNOME Keyring using Seahorse. Install it with the package seahorse.
It is possible to leave the GNOME keyring password blank or change it. In seahorse, in the "View" drop-down menu, select "By Keyring". On the Passwords tab, right click on "Passwords: login" and pick "Change password." Enter the old password and leave empty the new password. You will be warned about using unencrypted storage; continue by pushing "Use Unsafe Storage.""

DE's are generally gay, but useful when you actually have a life. WMs are more powerful, you just need to find a WM that suits your needs and skills. If you know C, dwm is good, if you know Lua, Awesome is your thing, just as example. Check out this WM list for MOAR: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/window_manager
Alternativly, Majaro offers many community flavors with already riced WMs as base like i3, bspwm, etc.

This.

You used $var but defined $i, thats everything.
Try:
for i in "$@"; do
ffmpeg -i "$i" -vf subtitles="$i" "$i".mp4
done

Not sure if the subtitles thing is what you want. How are the files called?

I don't have much advice to you other than: If you're going to dual boot Windows and Linux, use a smaller partition for linux, the rest NTFS, and don't even attempt to fiddle with an ext4 partition on windows. Just like HFS+, support on Windows for any kind of partition other than the native ones is atrocious. While on linux, NTFS works pretty much flawlessly.

configure: error: Library requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.18.0 gtk+-unix-print-2.0 glib-2.0 >= 2.22 gobject-2.0 gdk-x11-2.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

if this helps, the extracted source is located at /usr/local/src/icecat-38.6.0

Trying to set up SSH keys on my server

I have the keys I want to use but just wondered what the best practice is regarding copying them over?

I know about ssh-copy-id but if the server is already shut off with PasswordAuth=no then how are you supposed to get the keys across? Or are you just supposed to allow PasswordAuth for as long as it takes to copy the keys across? It's not really well-explained anywhere.

>>
>>53713829
You should be the only one who can create files on your server.
You write the pub key to the list of trusted keys.
Now anyone with your private key can access the machine.
Since you never share your private key, this should be safe

Something I dearly miss from using Windows since I switched to Linux Mint is the possibility, in a multi monitor setup, to mirror only two specific monitors.

I have three monitors and I want two of them (my main monitor and my TV) to be mirrored. The other monitor is left of my main monitor and should stay separate. On windows I could do this really easily. But on Linux it seems as if one can only ether mirror ALL monitors or none.

Am I missing something or a tool which allows me to mirror just two of my three monitors?

>>

Not the guy you replied to but what attributes make a distro 'better for coding' than another.
>>
>>53714548
I don't know, pretty much every distro is good. But people who generally ask for a specific distro for their specific usecase don't really care about what distros are ment for, they just want someone to tell them to use something.
I personally find Funtoo to be very good for my usecases because the software is always up to date, and easily customizable. Writing ebuilds (the files that describe packages and their installations) is a breeze as well, so it's easy to test my own "packages" on my own system as well.
In the end, pretty much every distro is good to be used for "coding", and it all boils down to user preference.

To people who play videogames here:

Have you actually seen any Linux ports/native versions that run poorly?

Because I've been very pleasantly surprised after my switch from Windows. Basically all ports I've tried have ran very solidly, roughly equally or even better than the Windows counterparts.

Just tried XCOM 2 and it worked like a charm, for example

The Witcher 2.

Ok, that's some sort of half assed wrapper but still pretty fucking ass, they shouldn't bother.

Other than that, not really. I notice fps on CSGO are more fluctuating and going crazier on linux but my display is so, so bad that tearing is worse than I could possibly stand, so I have to enable vsync and do that fps_limit 60 trick to minimize input lag.
>>
>>53714761
XCOM2 ran like ass when I last played it but that was right after release and I think the problem back then was on Windows just the same.

Dota2 also had huge problems years ago but its fine now.

It's more stuff like, when I play Civ5 and tab out of the game - and in again, everything is just fucked up. It's not like that on windows (where it works fine) and that's annoying.

Linux Mint is a-okay, my man. Remember that this is /g/ and people's trust is very fragile and unforgiving.

Their website got compromised for a day, and they fixed it swiftly and kept the community updated as they were dealing with it. They're implementing measures to avoid it ever happening again in the future.

The distro itself is clean. Website =/ distro. It's a pretty good beginner distro as well, I prefer it to Ubuntu

So I'm installing Arch on a VM so I can learn it, I have a question about mount points.

When it first told me to mount my partitions I did like in pic related of the first output of lsblk /dev/sda. The partitions are /boot, /, swap, and /home respectively. Since it told me to mount /boot to /mnt/boot, I assued I should mount /home to /mnt/home. The partition table is GPT, so the boot partition is formatted differently, if it matters.

The problem is when I do arch-chroot /mnt /bin/bash and do lsblk /dev/sda again, it gives me the second output in pic related. It tells the swap and /home partitions are correctly mounted, but /boot and / aren't. I am pretty sure this is giving me problems with installing and configuring GRUB.

Why are the mount points changing when I chroot?

Tbqhwy the most failure proof way of running both Currysoft Wendys and GNU/Neetnux is having two separate storage devices for each one of them.

A windows update won't nigger up your bootloader and a faulty grub update won't make your windows unaccessible.

Proprietary software has control over me (help me)
I know how to install Linux with a nice GUI and have played around in Linux. I just cannot get over my desire to use the very useful proprietary software. I'm a web developer and I really like my adobe suite. I really like to use Microsoft Office. I am also a gamer and gaming on a linux machine is borderline impossible unless you get a compatible linux game (limits to an extreme tiny list of games) or force wine, in which case you're spending a lot of extra processing just to load a windows environment versus just running Windows.

How do I get around it. I really don't want to stop gaming. (Too fun) but the idea of free software (not gratis) is extremely appealing as a libertarian.

I love Richard Stallman and his ideas but often it is impractical due to what I do on a computer. I am aware there are alternative programs but there really arent when it comes to gaming and the programs are a long shot away from being as powerful as the industry standards.

Gimp is not as good as Photoshop. It just isn't.
LibreOffice is not as good as Microsoft Office. It just isn't.

Help.

Why don't you simply run a dualboot? This way you can use your Windows boot for games and the software you want. I mean, at some points you gotta consider what you really want.

No, that's not how it works.

You need to have either a USB (ideal) to burn the ISO to, or burn the ISO to a disc.
If you go the USB route, Rufus is the best program for this on Windows.

You need either of these methods to boot from that media instead of your normal hard drive and install Mint + erase Windows

Also, obviously make sure the USB is big enough for the ISO
>>
>>53715964
What do you mean correct thing?
lsblk /dev/sda
gives me the first output in the pic I posted, which is exactly how it told me to mount in the guide.
df /boot
, however, tells me that it's on
airootfs
.
>>
>>53716030
Okay well I think I'll just go the USB route. Aside from the size of the USB disk being big enough, do I need to change stuff in the BIOS (the booting order, for instance)?
>>
>>53716053
If you exit chroot and lsblk again does it show the proper mounts or are they gone still.
>>
>>53716054

Make sure that the USB flash drive is above your hard disk or just choose the USB flash drive as the temporary source for booting during startup (most mobos have that option).
>>
>>53716054
Yes. Once you have your USB ready with Rufus (in the options, make sure you select GPT if your computer is relatively new when burning the ISO, or MBR if it's old), this is what you do.

>backup your personal data (music, documents, pictures, etc) to somewhere else. An external hard drive, a cloud service like MEGA, anything. Because you're about to erase it all from the HDD.
>turn off your computer
>turn it back on, and furiously press F12 or F2 during boot up to access the firmware screen
>you can either change the boot order to get the usb first, or (ideally) just do boot override for this one time to get to the USB, so you don't have to go back and change it later
>turn off SecureBoot and FastBoot in your BIOS, if they're on
>Save changes and exit
>it will now boot to the USB you made and begin the installation process
>select Erase disk when you're installing

And off you go
>>
>>53716061
It still shows the proper the mounts. Like I said, it shows the first output in my pic.
To be clear, I did exit chroot.
>>
>>53716054
>>53716099
Oh, and it's probably a good idea to just boot into your BIOS right now to find out if you're using Legacy BIOS or UEFI already, to see if you should choose MBR or GPT, respectively.

Oh yeah, sorry. The second quote should've been about the 3d acceleration stuff. I'm trying out Chromium and apparently it doesn't do copy on select by default, which is a pain if you're used to it.

I honestly thought everyone who cares already knew.

Sounds like it cant install grub. Can be a myriad of causes. Can't really help without specifics. You can always try to liveboot and install grub manually.

MBR stands for Master Boot Record and GPT stands for GUID Partition Table. MBR is an age-old standard in partitioning schemes for hard drives, GPT is the "new" kid on the block. MBR supports partitions of up to 4 primary partitions of max 2TB each. GPT supports much bigger partitions and huge amounts of them

If you're curious and want to read more about them just google MBR GPT and I'm sure you'll find good descriptions

I just thought of an easier way so you don't have to check on your BIOS. Right click on your windows start menu and select "Disk Management". Once there, select your hard drive's main partition and select properties. If it says MBR, then it's likely you have Legacy BIOS (old). If it says GPT, then you're definitely using UEFI. Based on that, that's what you want your USB to be partitioned as: MBR if using MBR right now, GPT if using GPT right now.

Once you're done with the Rufus thing, and you're in your firmware screen, make sure you disable FastBoot and SecureBoot like I said. If it turned out to be MBR, don't change anything. If it turned out to be GPT, then look for something in boot options that says "Legacy BIOS and UEFI" and make sure it's only UEFI.

that last part after the FastBoot and SecureBoot thing isn't too important though. If you can't find any options that say that just leave it be, you'll be fine. Just select to boot from your USB and you're good to go

Don't I need to mount / to /mnt before mounting anything else?

No. You can GPT/bios.
