i'm going to be getting a new (used) laptop that has windows 8 on it (came installed with it). i plan to install W7 on it and delete the W8 install once i make sure everything is okay with the w7 install.
the guy who i bought it from modded the bios to accept a different wireless card.
now my question is, i know the w8 stores the serial on the computer's BIOS, will I be able to install W7 still? and would a new OS install ruin the modded BIOS from the wireless card?

Is it W8 Pro? If so you can legitimately install W7 Pro. If not, you'll need to get a W7 key.
A new OS install doesn't touch the BIOS.

Cracks work, but get them from private trackers because some cracks are known to be botnets mining bitcoins or virae locking your files.
Or just don't use it for other stuff and reinstall as needed.

How does data recovery work on a SSD? I.e., on a HDD you accidentally delete something, but if it's not written over yet you can recover it with a program like Recuva. Does that work on SSD too?
>>53673016
For recovering deleted files it works the same way
>>53673023
Cool. And since extra writes can destroy the SSD, people can't use "secure erase" like with HDD right?

Secure erase also works the same way as HDDs.

>>53673241
IIRC, CPUs tend to cost a little more than GPUs, which are way more expensive than mobos. For a mobo you really just need something that meets your build specs - it's not like they have gigahertz power rankings or something. Just avoid any mobos with a lot of bad feedback.

Why did it required modding the bios to change wireless card?Does simply changing cards and installing drivers doesn't work?
Also, how does someone even mods bios?
About the key,
The OEM i.e. the manufacturer stores the license info/key in the bios .This results in skipping of key input during windows installation.
If you want to make the windows installation ignore the bios key, then do this:
>open windows installation media (usb or dvd) folder
>open sources folder
>open file ei.cfg in notepad
Make sure below [Channel],Retail is written,if not write Retail.save it.
Now you will be able to input win 7 key.

Just use Notepad++, dude. Maybe if you're one of those TV hackers who mashes the keyboard to generate dozens of lines about buffer converting to 3.141583724825 degrees past the fuzzy encryption, Emacs would make you a little faster. But you're probably not.

It simple and doesn't require a lot of effort into building the functionality into an editor, one you might not even be able to modify (which is why emacs is pretty popular).

My computer suddenly turned off
then it wouldn't turn on again. Fans would come on, lights would come on, but no boot
I currently have it working again with ram units 1 and 2 filled, but any ram in slots 3 or 4 and it doesn't boot. is my motherboard fucked? it's only a 15 month old computer. this means my ram isn't in pairs. it is two sets of 2x8gb RAM and they are indentical, just purchased several years apart.

>>53673766
I would recommend reinstall of Windows. I have only once encountered a virus that survived clean windows install, still it is possible.
You can't be absolutely sure without complete reinstall. Still this is what I recommend,
Make a bootable linux usb,any will do.
Boot into linux,no need to install, open hdd where you have your 1tb data.Go through each file and folder and delete permanently what you don't identify. Now reinstall windows.
If you don't wanna reinstall just yet,you can check your startup entries to check anything fishy.

Also reset bios before you check independently.

All of them, also there are other issues too. When I turn on my PC I have to enter into bios setup and then exit it or else the screen will go blank at the windows startup and I have to reboot.
Also if I leave it on for like over 6 hours in sleep mode the screen won't even turn on and I have to reboot.

1) I don't think it makes a big difference. Many programs/scripts/etc. online may require one or the other to work, but you can install multiple versions alongside each other if necessary. The changes are fairly minor AFAIK - for example,
--in 2.x "input" will evaluate whatever string you pass it, and you had to use "raw_input" to be safe. In 3.x "input" now behaves like raw_input of 2.x.
-- in 2.x "range" creates a list of numbers, while "xrange" creates a generator object that can be iterated over, but doesn't actually keep a bunch of numbers in memory. In 3.x "range" now behaves like xrange.
I'd go with 3.x for now, and study up on the 2.x differences just for fun later. Like I said it's not a big difference, but 3.x does arguably do things better.
2) There's a built-in IDE called IDLE, but many folks only use this to get started. Then they switch to something like Notepad++ and only run python from the command line.
3) I actually recommend http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-189-a-gentle-introduction-to-programming-using-python-january-iap-2011/ as a good start.

Sweating is the natural process by which your body transfers heat to your surrounding: you secrete water → it absorbs body heat to evapourate → you cool down.
If the air is already full of moisture, the sweat ⇆ vapour equilibrium isn't properly shifted to the right.
Heat transfer is impeded, thermoregulation isn't efficient, you feel like your slog through the Amazon jungle in a padded coat.

I have kingston hyper cloud x II and I have to unplug and plug it in again to use the microphone and lately while using it suddenly i hear this weird sound like sssssp and then suddenly the microphone and the headphones stop working and then only the headphones work and so I unplug and plug it in again and this time the headphones AND the microphone don't work and the 7.1 surround sound activating button on the usb sound card box thing turns off and i can't press the button to activate it, everything just stops and I have to restart my computer entirely for it to come back..
Also sometimes if I just change the microphone device and change it back after the mic stops working it'll start working (not guaranteed) but after a bit both the headphones and the microphone both disappear from the playback devices and recording devices list.

Isn;t there a massive difference between the algorithm behind the chatbot and the neural network behind TAY 1.0?
Can anyone explain the differences on how new information is stored and also the hardware differences between the two?
Sup /g/, my choice for a power supply are between these two at the moment:
http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model_Specification.aspx?id=C_00001966
http://www.corsair.com/en-us/cx750-80-plus-bronze-certified-power-supply
The TT one has a 720W while the Corsair has 750W. The Corsair is more expensive by about $6. However, the TT one, although lower in wattage, is semi-modular while the Corsair is non-modular. And it seems that the TT is less efficient at 100% load than the Corsair (bronze) by ~2% so whatever. The TT also has a 14cm fan instead of the 12cm one on Corsair. Those are the only differences I noticed. The CX also has:
>4-Pin Peripheral Connector: 4
>PCI-E Connector: 4
So 4x4PCI-E connectors so 16 in total right? My motherboard needs 6, and two 390x cards would need at least 8 (but probably 16 -- I'm not sure). Semi-modular makes more sense doesn't it?
I'm not going to be pushing these to their load any time soon but I might get another 390x for a dual setup/CF. Even then, I've used the calculator (http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator at 100% cpu tdp +24h use) and at MOST my system would consume 710W (in CF) so the TT semi-modular supply would still be a viable, cheaper, option. Really lost atm. The system is a mid-high end and I'm going to stick with it for a long time.
Also, the Tt's operational temperature is up to 35° while the Corsair is 30°. I'll provide enough ventillation/cooling for both though.
The only problem would be if the Tt doesn't actually deliver the power it's rated. Should I save some moneg and go for a much more reliable xfx?

OS X question. I'm using a TL-WN823N USB WiFi adapter to connect to the Internet. I've just discovered that the 10.10 driver is now available, but not yet the 10.11. Don't even know for sure if they'll ever get around to it. Have you looked into mpv?
Hi /g/,
My PC has been crashing lately when I launch any 3D application or if I've been watching video for several hours. The display crashes, doesn't recover and the system becomes unresponsive. I can still hear the CPU and fans running inside of my chassis, but I have to hard reset to recover from the crash.
The PC otherwise seems stable, I've run stress tests on both the CPU and memory and they appear fine. The voltages from the PSU are as expected. I also tried to use older GPU drivers. There are no error messages in the windows event viewer (aside from unexpected shut down).
Does anyone know what my problem could be? I'm guessing it's either a dying GPU or PSU. If my GPU at load pulled more watts than my PSU can currently provide, would that result in only the GPU shutting off? I would think if it was a PSU problem, the entire computer would shut off. Maybe I'm wrong here.
Any ideas?

Not sure if there's any good guide but basically:
1) Use Linux (seriously, not memeing)
2) Encrypt your hard drives. Don't use bitlocker.
3) Learn how to use GPG to encrypt, sign, and v erify data. Insist people use this infrastructure whenever they can.
4) Use HTTPS everywhere you can. Consider extremely carefully what you visit over HTTP.
5) Ditch common mail services like GMail, use your own (hard mode) or find a provider outside the jurisdiction of your opponent (ProtonMail, russian mail hosts
6) Use Linux (seriously)
7) Trust but verify.
8) Keep a tight watch on your updates.
9) For the love of god don't pirate or otherwise run untrusted executables.
10) Don't let other people use your computer, nor leave it on or unattended. Turn it off whenever you're not actively using it (full disk encryption only works if the attacker is booting cold).
11) Don't let apps and services like facebook share access to each other (no facebook email integrations etc to find friends)
12) Use secure, unique passwords, and where you can, 2FA, ideally with hardware tokens like Yubikey.
Tell me more about your threat model and what you want to protect against.

About to format my HDD.
W7, 8.1 or 10?
>>53679002
8.1 with classic shell
10 if you're going to play DX12 games
>>53678983
It's in the screenshot. "Failed attempt to launch program or document: Action: <C\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility\client PerfTune.exe>
Params:<>
Specifically: The system cannot find the file specified"
It's right there in the folder though. Not sure what the deal is.

I do IT for a small company. I just replaced the owner's wife's PC with a newer one with much better specs.
She's complaining that it is "not responding" a lot and the older PC never did that and sent screenshots of it being hung up when doing simple clerical things (not responding when renaming a network folder, not responding when moving a file on the network, etc). No one else is having any issues.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Number of applications/open files isn't an issue. No background applications. Network speed checks out.
>>53679023
I'm not going to play any DX12, I'll go with 8.1.
Where can I get a clean W8.1 iso? I've used nothing but 7 on the last years, got the iso from mydiditallife forum and used daz loader.
>>53679069
IDK senpai, I've never had to pirate windows before.
>>53679058
list old specs vs. new specs so we can get an idea where the problem might be
>>53679047
Shit. I forgot all about that. It stopped the error thankfully. Now to figure out why it's not working.
>>53679058
First see if the hard drive is failing
Then see if the RAM is bad
Then see if she has enough RAM
Then see if Windows is corrupted

What should be the minimum MBPS required for online gaming/streaming?
>>53679123
Doesn't matter, it's generally not a lot. What's more important is latency. 10Mbps is probably more than enough if you're the only user.
Obviously, there will be contention and slow down if your room mate is trying to torrent game of thrones, which is where a higher bandwidth can be useful, or alternatively, you could just QoS him to shit, giving your own traffic priority over his.
>>53679102
Damn, just checked the 8.1 section, links are down and project labeled as dead.
>>53679167
check the back couple of pages of the win8 thread and there should be a link to another post with links that still work
Are anti-static wristbands really necessary when assembling components?
>>53679238
nah, just keep contact with the case and you'll be fine
>>53679238
if you're assembling components on a regular basis, better to have one
I have kingston hyper cloud x II and I have to unplug and plug it in again to use the microphone and lately while using it suddenly i hear this weird sound like sssssp and then suddenly the microphone and the headphones stop working and then only the headphones work and so I unplug and plug it in again and this time the headphones AND the microphone don't work and the 7.1 surround sound activating button on the usb sound card box thing turns off and i can't press the button to activate it, everything just stops and I have to restart my computer entirely for it to come back..
Also sometimes if I just change the microphone device and change it back after the mic stops working it'll start working (not guaranteed) but after a bit both the headphones and the microphone both disappear from the playback devices and recording devices list.
anyone know what's going on and how to fix it?
I have some mp4 files and mkv that don't display video. Most of the problematic files don't play sound, either. I downloaded codec packs, but to no avail. Any idea what the problem could be? They work fine under Windows 8.1 but not Linux Mint.
When I use uBlock's element picker on commercial banner, it doesn't give me option to create filter. Create button is greyed out.
What's wrong?
>>53679366
do you have an example?
is the selector field filled out?
hey guys
My computer shuts off when I play intensive games (mildly intensive I would say).
It did with XCOM 2 and now with Call of Juarez. I then ran XCOM 2 with speccy and saw that my 8350 was spiking to 80-90 degrees so I found the culprit.
Now I opened the computer to check what was going on and couldn't find anything wrong other than I may have put slightly too much thermal paste, but I don't think it would cause the temps to go that high, would it?
I am suspecting there may be something wrong with my mobo, not the cpu as other things have been happening (USB ports will stop working for no reason, stuff like that, although it could be windows)
Should I try reapplying thermal paste and reattaching my 212 to it or should I just switch the mobo to something else and get an i5 6660k? (I am done with AMD cpus)
My pc is
FX8350
HD7950
M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+
Corsair 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
Thanks in advance

Here, stupid banner won't go away.
What I'm doing wrong?
What should be my frequency of ram to fit i5 4690?
>>53679422
Well shit it works now. I had to select all of those lines at once for some reason.
All I did was unplug 2xHDD, 1xSSD so I could clean up my case and now my computer won't start.
Advice.
Inb4 did you plug them back in.
>>53679422
it tries to block the image itself, once it changes you have ads again.
try###content > div.col-b > div[class^="d"]
instead, which blocks the container.
>>53679493
Check the power supply and make sure you didn't pull anything out of place. Other than that, just check connections in general.

We bought four identical machines of the new one but she's the only one reporting issues.
We basically just use Office (word, outlook) and a database client. Nothing strenuous at all
>>53679238
No. If you want, just plug in your PSU and poke it. Poking your monitor/TV/whatever while it's on will work as well.
>>53679544
most likely culprit is a bad stick of ram, run memtest
recommend a wireless headset.
the reason first and most of all is that I stand a lot from my desk PC to either drink or pee. A lot. So much that if I went wired I'd just be too bothered to not even wear them afterwards.
All I'm really looking for is good range, battery life and as a bonus if it can act as an emergency makeshift speaker since manually switching to speakers is a lot of trouble.
No Logitech G930 and Corsair V2000. both their arms break after a few months just google "g930 crack" or "v2000 crack".
Could someone give me a ballpark estimate of how much a 1080 will be? I have enough money for a 980, but if the 1080 will be around the same price then I might as well wait.
Looking for a device that connects to a local (= LAN) upnp radio streaming server and plays that stuff back. Basically a network radio client. But if I look for that all I get is software software software.

I'm trying but I have yet to find a working link for 8.1 Enterprise x64
>>53679575

>>53679584
I don't remember the brand name or anything but they make a wired headset that's set up as a breakaway so if you stand up and walk away the cord disconects and it switches to wireless mode

Is daz loader good for W8.1? Never cracked this OS before.
Do either of the AMD or Nvidia GPUs play nicer with linux?

So, my computer "hangs" sometimes. Well, Windows continues to "function".
>chrome pages become blank, loading takes a long time
>while this happens i can't go browse folders in explorer, loading takes long
Like I said, things still function so I thought my harddrive was failing. So tried browsing folders on other drives, but it has the same problem.
Could it be my PSU?
Is this a good power supply?

This is an NSA's wet dream, because these behaviors flag you, and you're sure to make a mistake with some communication or application that you're using.
You bet your ass they're going to keep a closer eye on you than someone using Edge browser on Windows 10.

>What's wrong?
You, for not providing any information for others to be able to answer you.
>>53679279
What, like literally just be touching the case the entire time and work with one hand? Does the case need to have the power supply plugged in and connected to the case? Sorry I just got the components to build a computer for the first time.
>>53679841
Absolutely, but the more people encouraged to do it, and the more it becomes the norm, the easier it is to get lost in the noise.
>>53679841
i rather be targeted that plain out unsecured

>>53679977
Even if it's 1/3rd of the open source world, that's good enough. While it's low enough to be a selector still, it's high enough that it imposes a high enough burden to break.
>>53680016
>it's high enough that it imposes a high enough burden to break
lol no
>>53679932
just touch your power supply every 15 minutes or so. avoid nylon and wool clothing.
don't wear socks with sandals either. nothing to do with static electricity, it's just retarded. don't do it.
>>53680013
pretty insignificant unless you have a really tiny amount of ram, maybe...
>>53680022
I don't think you understand how modern public key encryption works.
>>53679575
Raritan twice, no issues. Checking the hard drive now I guess
>>53679932
Work with your elbows resting on the sides of the case.
Honestly though, ESD isn't such a big deal. I think that most people who work with computers preach about what they do to avoid it but when they're actually working their grubby hands are all over the components. Computer parts are far more resilient than you think - you'll find that out when you install the RAM.

>>53680606
Your picture is really too shitty to tell. Doesn't really look like corrosion or anything. Might just be cobwebs for all we can tell.
So I've got a SSD and HDD, my OS and other key programs are on my SSD so I've been able to load up theses fine when this problem happens. The problem is some areas of files on my HDD take several minutes to load, at first I just thought "o just a lot of shit here" but I've since opened other files that hold much large chunks of crap with ease. This has since become a much bigger problem where my computer will BSOD by kernel data inpage error it will load up and just not detect anything other than the file structures on my HDD, this is normally sorted out by just turning it off/on again which is a very temporary solution.
I don't even know if this is place to ask this sort of question but it is I guess stupid questions thread, what do? I feel like I'm living with hard drive with alzheimer's and probably should just take the good bits off it and then go out back and shoot it before it really start to fuck everything up.
>>53680712
Did you originally have the OS installed on the HDD? If you're booting from the SSD, any errors from reading on the HDD shouldn't cause BSOD or anything. I would run the disk error check if you haven't already.
does 144hz actually make a difference or is it just jew propaganda? also how well does 1080p resolution games upscale to 2556x1440 resolution?
>>53680824
144hz you probably won't notice if you don't do upper end gaming or serious fps play or something. I could imagine video editors/animators using it, but for the avg consumer I'd say just wait until they're standard.
Both are 16:9, so it should upscale fine.
why does using else ifs not work here? i understand that it does not check anything other than 'if', if the others are 'else if' but why is that?
shouldn't 'else if's check if prompt matches some other stuff?
>>53681022
or is that code the same as using one reaaaaally long one 'if' statement? like "if >=0 and <=10 AND not this... AND this OR that...."?
>>53681022
You're never going to get past that second if. All possible ages will either be 0>10 or <0 || >10
>>53681022
because this is an example code that doesn't reflect "when" you should use if but rather "how to" . don't think about it.
>>53681097
oh shit i guess that makes sense then
>>53681138
okay but for example, when would i use multiple 'if' statements like that as opposed to 'if' and then 'else if's?
Hey guys, /g/ convinced me to order an SSD and I got it!
Now, I DO know how to install windows on it and make it the boot drive. What i DONT know is: should I remove my windows 7 installation off my current HDD afterward (to save space once it becomes my main storage drive)? Is that even possible? Is that the norm to do once my new windows install is on my SSD?
Also, I figure it's better to give my SSD a fresh install instead of cloning my current HDD installation, yeah?
Thanks bros, google was giving me shit for a question this specific
>>53681022
>why does using else ifs not work here?
Because you might want more than one of them to evaluate to true and perform their logic, baka.
>>53681187
like in the example, every if statement would be checked.
however using if-else means the second would be checked only if the first if statement was false. and the third one would be checked only if both the first and second were false. and so on.
>>53679827
Do I really have to spend 100 fucking bucks for a simple fucking radio?
>>53674925
I don't know if you're still here, cleared the CMOS and same thing nothing has changed I'm seriously considering just saying fuck it and buying a different mobo and CPU, AMD temperatures and noise levels are completely unacceptable anyways
