I have installed Debian chroot on this broken Chinese Android phone I have
Within the chroot I run qbittorrent webui and remotely tell it to download stuff. It also supports external USB peripherals, so I use a 32GB thumb drive as storage
Also I often set it to do stuff like transcoding videos to h265, it's slow as balls but gets the job did overnight

IMO cheap phones are only worth it if you can get ROMs. The stock ROMs usually suck. If you can get it to run KitKat then you're in good shape. Unfortunately there usually aren't ROMs because the phones suck and no devs buy them

512mb is passable, it depends on the phone and the speed of cpu and storage.
Did try some ZTE Blade I think and it was borderline usable however some other Lenovo and LG phones run very well with 512mb, could use them as DD with no problems..
