I have two monitors. If I try to play a game, like CSGO for example, and try put a youtube playlist in Firefox on the other monitor, the performance in game tanks.

CPU usage isn't even that high, it hovers between 20-30%, and my system is fairly high end. 2nd monitor is only 60Hz, don't know why Speccy says 144Hz for both.

My computer crashes and gets the BSOD when idle for about 5-10 minutes.

It never does this otherwise.

I built it a year ago will all-new parts. About two weeks ago I added a new GPU to it, a GTX 960, and everything was going fine up until a few days ago.

It does not crash in safe mode.

You guys have taught me so much over the years, can you help me out one more time?

Not any worse than buying a brand new CPU. You could argue that someone planted a backdoor or whatever in the firmware but the same could be said for a stock CPU. Very few (as in percent of the population) has knowledge to do it so I wouldn't worry about it.

Usually they do work on all ubuntu based distros.

Most distros come with a GUI package manager/installer that makes installing stuff very easy.

At max you might have to download a zip and run a few commands.

Linux these days is piss easy to use and you wont have to do crazy hard stuff. There are plenty of tutorials out there and you will get step by step guide of most things you will be wanting to do.

Click icon for uBlock Origin -> "Enter element picker mode" (it looks like the color select tool in paint) and then just click on whatever you want remove and it'll help you create a filter.

If you aren't using uBlock Origin, then uninstall whatever shit you currently have and install it NOW.

>>
>>53592361
Not that guy but I second his "most likely graphics driver" opinion.

Uninstall driver completely, should be doable in 5-10 min timeframe.
Reboot, windows should get you its own derpy-driver so you'll have a terrible resolution. Don't worry, it'll boot properly.

Don't install any other drivers, just test if you won't get any crashes with the derpy-windows-driver.
No crashes? Install another driver.
Still crashing? Something else is the cause. At this point your best bet is probably to reinstall OS (worrying considering it's already a fresh install, but still worth a try before assuming it's hardware-related).

If the fans at the top are outtake and CPU cooler blows upwards then it looks OK.
Otherwise it should will still work thanks to relatively good case airflow preventing accumulation of too much heat within the case, but *it wouldn't be optimal*.
You want to get rid of air from the HOT-HOT parts (CPU, GPU) ASAP to prevent it from being reabsorbed by other components.

>replace thermal paste, been more than a year
Replacing thermal paste is a procedure that's done once to replace the crap that CPU/GPU manufacturers provide for "free" for something with actual market-competitive thermal conductivity.
Maybe there are pastes that degrade over time, I dunno, but in general, thermal pastes work in the opposite manner, often needing to "set-in" over time before providing optimal conductivity.

It's also a good practice to replace thermal paste whenever it gets exposed (when you pull the cooler off the cooled component) to prevent "accumulation of tiny imperfections" so-to-say.

So if you already got good paste there (that's a Noctua cooler, they still give their TIM free with every cooler, right?) then you have absolutely no reason to change it just because "it's been there more than a year".
If you want to change it for something better, then I dunno. Do your own research. IMO Noctua's NT-H1 is good enough, no need to replace it.

>I guess it'll be fine.
Don't take it as granted.
Every part is different even if they are exactly the same model and produced in exactly the same batch. Do the proper incremental overclock->test->overclock->test routine.
Don't jump to 4.5 GHz from stock like a retard. It should be fine with that cooler but - again - don't take it as granted.

>>

Or water resistant?

>>
>>53593451
No. System partition/drive capacity and system performance (be it boot speed or general cpu usage) are two metrics that are unrelated.
Closest things to that that are related are that on a larger partition you can have more stuff, and having more stuff can make it slower (more work for search indexer).

tl;dr: No. Having more empty space *will not* make it run slower. Having more *full* space may, but even then not necessarily.

I'm assuming that "drivers from a month ago" weren't the same ones you just uninstalled.
No point uninstalling them again.

Try running in safe mode (no network to eliminate one more potential cause), see if it crashes there - let it run until first crash or for an hour.

>What else could it be?
Tons of shit, anon. Tons.
That's why it's best to test for drivers first because those are easily and most conveniently reinstallable.

>i7 over an i5
Moar cores.
If you're doing computationally heavy work on your PC (like datamining, gaming is NOT computationally heavy) then you get i7.
Alternatively, you get one if you want to impress your friends over at speccy threads and don't mind spending tons of $$$ for minimal practical gains.
Otherwise, you stick with i5.

>2 8gb ram sticks over 2 4gb ones
Twice the capacity. Meaning twice as much resources can be stuffed into the memory.
Again, crucial in things like datamining. For "normal" uses 8 GB sounds enough, if you have reasons to believe it's not enough for you then just get 16 GB and don't give it more thought.

It will.
Super-short non detailed explanations incoming:
Dual-channel means that ram sticks work best in pairs (2, 4, 6, 8 sticks) triple channel in threes (3, 6...) quad channel in fours (4, 8...).

RAMs will *work* together if they are same DDR (duh).
They work together *better* if they are same top frequency (all sticks have to run at same frequency, if you have 3 1600 MHz and one 1333 MHz, all will have to work at 1333 MHz)
They work *even better* together if they are the same model (eliminates compatibility issues that shouldn't happen in theory, but in practice they still do happen).

Yours is best case scenario. It will work perfectly.

DMZ is overkill for a game, set up port forwarding for the specific ports it needs. Most developers have that information out there, just google the name and port forwarding.

Personally I recommend writing some firmware to override the toothbrush's BIOS and have it "unplug" itself automatically.

If you're going to use the bluetooth regularly, you're going to sacrifice sound quality.

Do you already have any speakers, or is that really what you're after?

When I say stereo, this is what I mean.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH130-Channel-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B006U1VH2S.

If you want something that's just an FM receiver + bookshelf speakers, just go to the store and pick something you like based on looks. I'm sure they've all got a line in and maybe even a USB reader.

Should I pirate this stuff? Oddly enough I was also looking to buy a new hard disk. Bit difficult to find somebody with 1TB of free space. I might as well buy one and use an enclosure to externalize it and transfer data that way (it'll be useful in the long run as well).

Was looking at this specifically, since it's sturdier and more performance-oriented than your typical HDD (but about 50% more expensive): http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760

Download the Windows 8.1 ISO from here:

Get a program to make your USB bootable with the iso.
(Rufus or unebootin).

Then boot from your USB and reinstall windows 8.1.
You will lose the stuff you have so you might want to backup everything with a linux USB.

What happened is that dell backup software fucked up your windows partition trying to restore 8.1 when 10 was installed.

Question I haven't been able to find an answer to online:

Does anyone know how to make the touch keyboard on windows (happened on 8.1 & 10) tablets popup automatically as soon as a textbox is selected in desktop mode? It just randomly stopped one day and is quite annoying to have to do it manually.

Someone online said microsoft programmed it to only work in metro apps, because they assumed keyboard & mouse would be used in desktop mode, but that wasn't the case for me when I first got the tablet

Its on the accessibility options in windows 8.1.

Also when you reinstall windows you might have to reinstall some drivers.
Download 3DPN for network drivers if windows 8.1 doesnt install them from the start and 3DP Chip for all the others.

Say I want to upload a video to Youtube......

From what I've heard, Youtube transcodes any videos above 2000bps. So say I want to upload a video that's 60FPS--would I theoretically get better video quality if I did 30FPS at 1080P, than if I did 60FPS at a lower resolution, assuming both are using the same bitrate?

>>53597749
If you have no rush buy as soon you see something under 5% of the original price or a better part that is under 10% and is better than the one you current selected.
Example, a I5-4460 is $130 here, and the price gets reduced to $115, you buy it then.
BUT, the I5-4590 got a discount too and now is $130, then get the I5-4590.

Its all about stalking offers around newegg and amazon, if you dont have the money to buy it all right now just wait and look for offers.
Or save and get better parts.

framerate doesn't linearly change the complexity of a video encode, that is, a 60fps encode vs. a 30fps encode of the same source won't necessarily need twice the bitrate at a given per-frame quality
while there's twice as many frames to encode, the difference between the frames is lower, making them more predictable

same goes with resolution, twice the resolution doesn't necessarily require twice the bitrate

it's all down to the content, do some test encodes locally of the video(s) in question and see what results you get
