Phase one of my small DIY project done.
All switches desoldered in less than 2 hours, not bad for a rookie i guess.

So far 1 switch destroyed because i was curious how does it look like inside and bent metal leaves too much. And 2 more stems broken during the keycaps removal, even using the wire puller.

Are these alps so squishy or am I a fucking troglodyte?

Question for those with HHKB, how do live with out dedicated media keys. I want to get one but the inability to use playpause/next/prev is insane to me. Are there workarounds I'm not aware of? (I use win/mac/linux for different things so things like autohotkey are ew.)

Also where do you get HHKB keycaps?

magic trackpad + bettertouchtool (really fucking good piece of software)

I've seen realforce caps in various colors (would also fit the HHKB for the most part) on amazon.jp, but I'm not sure why'd you want to replace the HHKB anyway. Unless you're willing to novatouch-stem-mod it.
>>
>>53595622
Hmm, if I go for the expensive stuff I'd probably go for some Leopold caps, damn they make nice ones.
>>
>>53595729
Using bettertouchtool already(mainly for window snapping because OSX window management is ass by default and a few other hotkeys.)

Guessing I could use it to bind some funky ass key combinations that I'd never use to the media keys. Just a pita to set up the bindings in 3 oses I guess.
>>
Other than the privilege of waving my internet dick around, what do I actually gain from buying something like a Ducky or a Filco over a cheaper option like a Rosewill or a Coolermaster?
>>
>>53595841
CM is hit or miss quality wise. For the most part they're super solid and not only a value but genuinely good. No experience with Rosewill peripherals but in general Rosewill is pretty decent.
>>
>>53595889
but for the boards that are generally regarded as good, such as the quickfire rapid? Rosewill has the RK-9000 which is supposed to be pretty well built as well.
What I'm wondering is would I gain anything from spending more and buying something slightly fancier like a Ducky one?
>>
>>53595978
>quickfire rapid
I'm using the 1st gen QuickFire Rapid and love it. Only replacing it "because I want to" and it's been a couple of years. I don't think you really gain anything other than what's stated on the spec sheet, switch type/leds/etc. The quality of the Rapid is pretty good, the keys have a shine but that's to be expected with the keycap material.
>>
>>53595732
With Leopold I've heard you have to make sure you get the right keys you need. It's also never easy to find a buyer with the right look you want, no matter the brand. I guess you have to scour the internet and get lucky.

It's a shame that feng is busy moving back to China because he often does some nice sets.

Got two old model m keyboards for free from my last summerjob. Had to clean them but now they look and feel factory new. 3>
>>
Hey guys, I'm kinda new to mech keyboards, but looking around and trying to filter out the memes, I came up with 2 alternatives. The shine 5 with browns or this one https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1525

I know they're both entry level and it's kind of why I'm getting one of them, I'm okay with brown switches, though I'd like clears, I can't find many in stock.

Can you give me your insight into which one I should get? I don't know the ins and outs of the models, outside of the description, since it seems to be only the variety of the LED colors, Is this right? I have no experience with backlighting, but would generally like to have it, and both do. Anyways. any opinions would be appreciated

Quick question about the poker 3

Does it have NKRO or it's just 6-key rollover?
Is it different with the other variations it has(blacklight light, pbt)?

Usually from different sites are telling different information, it's confusing already. I haven't tried it out, so I wanted to be sure before purchasing.
>>
>>53605158

Filcos are 6kro over USB.

Most keyboards are 6KRO over USB (except for Ducky and Cooler master who manage to do it somehow on a firmware/software level).

USB doesn't really allow for anything more than 6KRO by design.

Not that it matters, the nkro USB hack isn't much better than 6kro.

I once again disagree.
especially if you use programs that have macro+arrow key commands. for example enjoy editing text in OS X where highlighting the last typed word in a text editor is Alt+Shift+Fn+alpha key.
try to do this shit quickly and you WILL make typos, because unlike the arrow key island, there's no tactile feedback when trying to find whatever alpha keys your 60% keyboard has assigned as arrows. and this is coming from someone who has been typing at 130+ WPM for 20 years, so I certainly have no issue locating keys.

it's just asinine to put arrows under an fn layer when there's clearly enough space to put it, and worse when there are dedicated keys for fucking right shift and tilde.

So I just got around to experiment a little with my vintage Alps keyboards.
To make it short:
There is this one faggot in these threads who always talks shit about Matias switches, being worse than original Alps and stuff.
I can tell you, the Matias switches are way better than used vintage Alps. I don't know about NiB models, but usually they are expensive as fuck (thanks to the hype).
The Matias QC ones are really good if you are on a tight budget.
>>
Anyone knows where to get best blank ISO keysets in Europe?

What do you guys think of the lolita spyder by noppoo? The name is really creepy and the switches are not cherry, but I find the price okay. Is it worth 40 pounds?
>>
>>53617711
u mean like this?
>>
>>53616800
Í don't know if this information is worth anything to you, but anyway:
I just tried putting a Matias springleaf into an orange Alps switch. That actually feels really nice, makes the orange Alps a little springier and tactile. They are still incredibly loud though, my MX-Whites are way more silent.
I also put an orange Alps slider into a Matias switch and holy fucking shit, this is weird.
It's basically impossible to not bottom out. Once you reached the threshhold the key will travel the whole 4mm. It's pretty loud and the bottomout is pretty rough, but I think I could like this switch. A lot.
>>
>>53617859
I don't think you can get £40 and real cherry.

Now I'm not really personally a fan of kalih switches. For £40 the only real other option I think is the Magicforce 68
>>
>>53617923
Are they significantly worse than cherry switches though?
>>
>>53617935
I'm no big expert, I've only tried razer greens aka kalih blues. they're not my cup of tea.
It might also be down to that specific boards build quality that means they feel worse. I have a Magicforce with Outemu blue switches, I find them very enjoyable for example
>>
You don't know how bad kailh is until you get through one. My g key on my zalman zmk500 is giving up. Worst of all, there's not any decent tenkeyless in the same price range or a bit more expensive, it's either this or above 80.
>>
>>53616694
I agree for the most part, matias makes amazing clones, but the problem with vintage alps tends to be how much they were used and abused and the condition they were stored in.
Pristine, nicely stored, and barely used SKCM blues and whites feel better than matias imo.
Try cleaning up / lubing those oranges and click modding them.
>>
>>53617994
>Mechanical keyboard
>Expensive, but long durability
>a key fucking fails

Well that defeats the purpose.
>>
>>53618016

It's kailh, a chink knockoff, but it's been few months and I've not been using it all that much. If you think about it, the g key is not even one of the most commonly used keys for everyday life, yet it fucking gave up.
>>
>>53617865
that is really awesome but is there one in darker colors? I actually really do like that one though
>>
>>53618073
That's the only one I know of, it's called NPKC Rainbow
Massdrop have them from time to time
>>
>>53618000
I tried lubing them. Things got worse. For some reason (used krytox 103/205 50:50) the upstroke is accompanied by an annoying click now.
I didn't do anything to the springleaf, but it is still like that for some reason. Maybe it is because of the heavy use?
One even started doing this without getting lubed. I opened it, cleaned it from the dust and reassembled it, just for it to start clicking on random occasions. I don't know what's going on there.

However, as I said here >>53618000 I tried to use the springleaf of the Matias switches and it actually makes the switch feel quite nice. There is no click (although the Matias QC leafs come prelubed) and the switches feel way nicer that way. It's hard to point out, but they feel "newer".

How exactly does clickmodding work? If it's just bending the springleaf a little further, I tried that and it feels quite horrible to be honest.
>>
I want to get a g710. Does that make me a bad person?
>>
>>53618172
Only misguided
>>
>>53618152
>How exactly does clickmodding work?
There are two tabs on the bottom on both clicky and tactile SKCM alps, but tactile have another set on the top as well (prevents the click leaf from bending inward as much and springing back to smack the outer housing, which causes the click). Bending the upper set of tabs inward to be flat against the back of the click leaf will make a tactile leaf more like a clicky one.
>>
>>53617865
Lucky the fucking leprechaun reporting in
>>
>>53618334
Thanks for the tip.
Just tried that and it actually makes orange Alps quite nice. I also tried a Matias clicky leaf with a orange switch. It feels a little crisper, but I guess that's due to my orange Alps being quite busted.
All in all a quite nice mod, but sadly I don't like clicky Switches anymore, except for the soft click of my MX Whites.
