Originally it was just so not what you see any where else, I kept coming back for that.

Now, it's because it's a site where I can discuss my interests and not have to worry about what I say or how I say it. None of the SJW crap or real mods. And depending on the thread (and board) most of the discussions are actually better than some of the hivemind, politically correct, circlejerks of other sites that cater to what I'm interested in.

You can truly speak your mind without having to attach your opinions to your full name, address etc like in normie land of facebook etc. Also even reddit with usernames gets old because of you say the wrong thing it's all linked to a username and you have to go thru the trouble of making a new account. Sites that want true free discourse should be anon by default like 4chan. What's funny is how sjws hate 4chan but anon posting is the true way to be judged solely on your thoughts not by your gender/race/age/sexual preference etc.

I hate having to register for everything possible. My internet/app usage has really dropped over all in the past few years. I only actually actively use 2 or 3 sites. Breaks down the wall of thinking you have to be nice to people. Can't do anything but be positive on a forum or else the person who was being an idiot hates you forever and starts crying and they've been there longer than you and gets the admin to ban you.

No weight to the posts for like or dislike, reddit is a total fucking joke. Has a few boards instead of ten billion of them. Ever actually been to reddit? Read the rules on any board you want. It will go something like this

>video games
>Do NOT post video games here. If you want to do that go to the genre board.
>go to rts subreddit
>Do NOT post RTS games here. Go to /r/rts/game
>/r/starcraft: Do NOT post single player, multiplayer, or any player, do NOT post starcraft here.
>/r/starcraft/multiplayer
>Do NOT post here if you play Terran. Do NOT post here if you play Zerg. Do NOT post here if you play Protoss.
>r/starcraft/fuckyou/multiplayer/zerg/
>Do NOT post anything about drones, zerglings, hydralisks or any zerg unit or anything
Congrats you're now on a board with 30 other people and the next reply to yours will be in a year.

Meanwhile on 4chan you'd be forced to be together and have to defend your retarded opinion or change it.

"but people on 4chan are such assholes"
no it just forces you to defend your opinion because "Well It's me again and it's my stuff cause I bought it and now I'm stuck with it" doesn't fucking matter. Your opinion was wrong. You fucked up. So yes you cry at first but stick with any board for a long enough time and you will really know what is the best things/brands/products/ideas/strategies/whatever

I can refresh and there's different shit, mostly. The activity combined with how fast things disappear means that there's always going to be something interesting going on.

On a deeper level, it's the fact that you can't hide behind your identity. If you say something dumb, your internet friends aren't there to come to your defense and there's no post/reputation system you can use to damage control things. This is probably the last place left on the internet where a shitty argument is a shitty argument and identity doesn't get involved in any way. That's pretty valuable.

You're an oldfag when you see a complete shift in culture happen to a board and don't understand what happened.

Basically when you become out of touch. It's all subjective though. I'm an oldfag when it comes to /v/ but I've only been on /g/ for about a year.

You'll always be a newfag if someone has been here longer than you though.

There's still generally something new in them because the old ones disappear. I guess /g/ is a bad example because it's a somewhat slower board, but the faster boards rarely have threads hang around for more than a few hours. There's reposts, sure...but there's only so much to talk about in the context of a specific interest like video games or technology anyway.

Anonimity. And some degree of randomness. You want to consume a stream of random content everyday and not pay for it.

But the way things are going right now, /g/ is far from offering much randomness. 85% of threads are the same predictable boring stuff which is probably posted by the same boring people with very fixed interests (ricing, generals, desktop threads, watch threads, anime threads, linux threads, OS wars threads, hackneyed memes threads, etc etc).

Not so much addictive, just as natural as breathing. I've been posting here since around the time Inuyasha first aired on Toonami and I dunno what the fuck else I'd be doing if I were lurking this shithole. Remember back when some faggot would always post loli threads on /g/ every couple of days? Those were the days.

I'm not going to get withdrawl from not browsing 4chan, but I will be afraid of missing out on shit; I get a lot of valuable information about my various interests here, even if I have to wade through a sea of shit. Well, ever since I completely stopped going on /b/ and /v/, it's been a much more pleasant experience. I think the last time I was on /b/ was shortly after the whole pools closed bullshit and scientology nonsense.

In the early days it was the various board culture. Each board felt like a compleatly different place.
/a/ upheld a super elitist attitude. If you didn't assimilate it was a bad time for you. The shit that flies on /a/ now would have got you perma-banned a few years ago.
/b/ actually accomplished shit. REAL SHIT. Yes it was still random, but there was also a lot of original content and less of the repeated bullshit every 2 min.
/g/ was about the same, but with less of the gamer garbage. /g/ held second place, right behind /a/, for the most elitist board. Though it seems /g/ has dropped the ball these past few years. /bst/ was still in it's infancy, Unboxing threads were the big thing.

That's what kept me addicted in the past. I continue to stay for other reasons, such as:

The anonymous factor. Being anon means everyone is honest an upfront about everything. A majority of the stuff that's done or said here would or never could be said or done on a site that requires an account.

Memes start here and die elsewhere (Reddit). Memes here are organic, they are born from and tied to the differing board cultures (It's why most memes seem so cringe worthy and nonsensical when found outside of the site). Most aren't forced and they naturally die to make way for the next one.

Niche behavior. Most of the stuff that's acceptable here would not be okay elsewhere.

Everything is temporary. It gives a true feeling of being In-the-now. Sure, there are archives, but like a photo, it doesn't compare to actually participating and being their at that moment.

Even though I see the same threads popping up everyday on the same boards, I come here because I'm addicted to the idea that something will pop up that interests me.

In fact, I spend hours of my time on the /g/ archives searching up topics that interest me. Is there anyone else that does this? I feel as though I'm really addicted to this place. It's gotten to the point where I have to stop myself from shitposting in real life because I know no one will get the joke.

/v/ can still be pretty great, you just need to avoid the mainstream and obvious bait threads. If you stick to niche and comfy threads, you'll have a good time. Until it becomes popular, that is. That's what makes Yakuza and MonHun threads good.
>>
It's amusing that almost all Internet in-jokes and cultures (a.k.a. memes) originate here, and the majority of 'normies' that spread them beyond here are quite oblivious to their true origins.

This place also feels like a last bastion of the old, wild fun internet, before the influx of normies and the marketing and profiling followed.

You must be joking. This place has gone down the shitter recently. It's nothing but a shadow of it's former self. I honestly believe it's because a large part of the core audience fucked off and all the little kids from reddit and twitter come here because they think this is where the cool kids hang out. They take their shitty memes with them and post them here. Fucking hell. Maybe I'm just getting old. Our memes back in the day were hilarious, these modern ones are garbage. I was happy when our Japanese overlord took over and started word filtering shit again. It helped a bit.

Holy shit, this. Chatango, GameSpot unions, Tom's Hardware, all that dumb shit. I took part in it all, I was obsessed with social internet stuff.

Then Facebook came around. And my world changed. Ironically, that absolute shit social site with no games I found circa 2005 became the leader of the Web 2.0. Suddenly my private virtual shelter became shared by my classmates, my friends, my teachers, my parents.
An internet where revealing personal information was considered heresy and an open invitation to doxxing and identity theft, changed to one where keeping your anonymity is an ever increasing challenge and actually outs you as a criminal.

And I called quits. The web I once loved to surf, to search every page, every index of google and MSN, became a scary and unfamiliar place. Old sites I used to frequent either disappeared or adapted to the new situation, changing completely in the process.

Except this place. I've been here for roughly 7 years, maybe more. It's still the same crude shit it's always been. Just new words.

Perhaps that is why I keep coming back. It feels like home.

They did. All that resulted in was a significant split of /v/'s and /pol/'s userbase towards a different website.

I go there. /v/ feels more homegrown since generals, pokeymans, and old school games are all on the same board. 4chan's /v/ is heavily balkanized into /vp/, /vr/, and /vg/, so basically only shitposting and current viral marketed hyped shit gets posted on /v/. It's why the board sucks so bad.

4chan's /pol/ though is still much more fun than 8gag's. They're like the SS divison of no-fun allowed hitlerworship.

>>53577900
The current evolution of boards are actually more refined and have more depth than what was happening back in like say 06-09.

2008 /g/ was basically an entire board dedicated to building and ricing computers and recommending phones. Very little programming or linux discussion going on. /a/ was otaku shitposting and tohou. Barely any anime discussion going on until luggage lad created /jp/. The increase in moderation actually helped guided discussions and some order. You wouldn't see scanlators on /a/, that's for sure.

Believe it or not 4chan is probably the most creatively liberating 'mainstream' website out there.

Anonymity is a boon and a curse. And its the reason why I keep coming back here. There also seems to be, for a lack of a better term, a more ...intellectual..userbase here than on other websites. People here can take jokes, understand irony, and they don't take remarks at face value.

I used to frequent reddit back when it was new and was basically a tech website. This was circa 2006-2009. The programming, technology, linux, and sysadmin subreddits were excellent.

But the founders tried different ways of monetizing the site. They got strict on what people could post. They purged the controversial communities. They enforced controlled speech. And they made rules where content creators cannot self advertise, because they wanted them to buy reddit advertising space.

This naturally didn't work on a website where most of its userbase hated ads. So they slowly seeded in different normie subreddits that nobody used....until Digg imploded, which caused a mass exodus of normies that gobbled the bullshit right up. That's when reddit died. Since then the site has been slowly sanitizing itself of any controversial content and subreddits to appeal to a wider userbase.

4chan has never tried to sanitize itself to appeal to a wider audience. It's filth. It knows its filth. It revels in it. This filth is what gives birth to creativity, because people don't limit themselves to imaginary internet points or attempt to garner the approval of internet strangers. They just fucking shitpost because its fun. And fun ideas are universal. Fun is creative. This place lets creative people thrive.

I agree with you but still stand by my original statement.
The /jp/ split was indeed needed, but /a/ had just as much anime discussions going on then as they do now (You simply had to wade through more shit to get to it. I mean lots of shit). I remember the discussions and generals really picking up when seasonal-chart threads became a thing.
I also loved the fact that /jp/ got it's own board, it was a smart move. All of the /b/-tier shit moved to /jp/, but eventually subsided, allowing /jp/ to become a calm and comfy place. Honestly I likely would have fallen for the Fleshlight/Tenga meme had it not been for /jp/ ushering in the divine knowledge of Onaholes.

/g/ was pretty barren when it came to programming or Linux. It was more of a consumer feedback board.
>>
>>53579816

>someone (friends/family) might try to throw you a rope to help you out, and 9/10 times you will pull them in with you
eventually, the rest of the time, you struggle to reach for the rope, but you only end up sinking further

one day you find yourself not visiting the site for a day or so, and you realize that all you ever had to do was stop fighting it to be free

Night and day difference.

The fleshlight was made with the intention of getting you off as quick as possible. Onaholes are all about enjoying the ride all the way to climax.
You have tight ones, soft ones, ones that replicate what you think fucking an animu character would feel like, and ones that do an incredible job of mimicking the real thing. Lots of options.

I usually piss into the void every now and again, nice to get some relief from this intolerant PC climate our world is now entering.
