When learning overcommenting is good.
First, it makes you understand what you're doing, in order to write a comment you have to know what the code does, also if you have a wrong gist of it it will let you self-correct.
Secondly, after you leave school, the amount of comments you write rapidly decline, so if you ere taught to comment moderately then you stop commenting at all and if you were verbose at school you become moderate commenter IRL.
Ofc that's huge generalization, not everyne is like that, but majority is, minority will self-suffice anyway.
