What's 'the best' or a list of good Linux distros that work well with ricing the shit out of your desktop?
What are some good resources on getting started to rice your desktop?
Complete beginner and just want to partition my drive and give it a go, see what I can do; just need a shove in the right direction.

Any distro works fine as long as it's Linux, even *BSD works. A lot of us use barebones distros like Arch or Gentoo for simplicity but it's up to you, think of other distros like Ubuntu as pre-riced by the devs.
Arch wiki is great no matter your distro for learning about WMs, x11, terminal emulators, GTK, etc. Other than that google.com

Running on a Macbook Pro (I know forgive me) so the last time I tried installing Arch (Dual booting from a smaller partition) it wouldn't really work because I couldn't get hold of the wifi to actually download the OS during the installation. No ethernet connection on the laptop either which sucks. Will have to look into preloading the wlan drivers on the install or finding them and copying them during the install or something similar.
Once I get it running though I think I should be able to manage my way around getting something sort of nice looking with a little bit of effort - it's just getting it working to begin with.
One more question. Is it possible to once (if) I get Arch Linux up and running to enable things like keyboard backlighting and touchpad gestures (even if they're not that great). Not sure if its proprietary Apple drivers or what.

Apple hardware is really hit and miss, but keep in mind it's at the very most rebranded other shit so a lot of generic drivers will usually cover it. Obligatory "backlighting works fine for me" comment, I can't guarantee anything but I don't see why not.

Macbooks are expensive as fuck, that's just a given. But if you were to ignore the price they're actually very nice to work on (in my opinion). I think a really clean, riced desktop on a Linux distro would match the sort of elegant look it has going for it, hence why I'm here.
