I think it's entirely proper to not give an advertising company the benefit of the doubt on anything touching on privacy issues, even in the absence of firm evidence that anything problematic is going on. Since Google's interest here is in knowing more about you so as to make more money by showing you ads. That's literally where all their money comes from.

To be frank, I trust Google (Alphabet) more than I trust Microsoft. After what Microsoft has done since Windows 10 was released, they lost all trust I had in them.
At least Alphabet is transparent, and they clearly state what they do with your data / information. Microsoft just shares your data with its so called "partners".
