so apparently this is the most awesome toy for every real life hater. how is this possible that there are no "second life" like games available? or is there any other shit available that gives you the feeling of being completely cut off from the real world?

There's the theatre app that lets you watch movies with other people, and actually talk to them with your voice as well. You can adjust their volume and everything too.

To be honest I really want one.

Yeah but there's only 4 that really matter right now that I can think of
>>
>>53452113
Vive, Rift, PSVR, and?

GearVR is just a glorified cardboard. The rest are still clunky prototype stage. OSVR is DK2 levels at best.
>>
>>53452174
I was talking about GearVR, yeah.

They're the most relevant I guess, as in they're the 4 most normies are going to buy.
>>
>>53453770
It's hard for me to even call GearVR true VR without positional though. HTC says they aren't going to come out with mobile VR until they fix that.
>>
>>53452174
GearVR is better than Cardboard, just for app support, and better motion controls

There's also LG G5's VR headset that uses USB-C to make it thinner
>>
>>53455436
>just for app support, and better motion controls

So glorified cardboard

>There's also LG G5's VR headset that uses USB-C to make it thinner

Which is a terrible product. The gyro is linked to the phone so any movement it makes will completely fuck up the head tracking. Combine that with a LCD screen that has no low persistence and you have a guaranteed headache. Also FoV is an unimpressive 90 degrees. The LG team either is full of idiots or they put zero thought into it.
>>
>>53451950
What. Please source. I have a Gear VR and am not aware what this is, though I've got other porn.
>>
>>53455512
>So glorified cardboard

Well it has much better latency than cardboard which is a big deal for VR. Going Rift, maybe Vive personally, but GearVR is probably the best smartphone VR solution.

Well it is. But being the best of something doesn't make it good.

GearVR seems like a rushed product. They could have at least made some sort of option for positional tracking using the Rift's camera. Also if this works and isn't a hoax then Carmack dropped the ball. How does some no name party get steaming working before they do?

Whether a product is good or not depends on the consumer's expectations. GearVR is certainly going to be a good experience for a lot of people and it's not that expensive.

But even Rift and Vive are going to look like shit in a couple years. Right now the low FOV and resolution are things I'm going to wish were better when I get mine and it is going to be many years before we get complete immersion. But VR is a huge step up from even TrackIR + multi monitor setups which is as good as it gets for most gaymers.

And that's the thing. It's ok for a first experience if you've never tried VR before. Even DK1 blew people's minds. But when it comes to long term use you have too many issues. No positional, battery life or overheating issues, no decent input methods, only 60hz, locked to cell phone level hardware, etc.

It's cheap but it's pretty shit compared to an actual VR headset. By having no positional and no option to stream from PC, it's still just a glorified cardboard and nothing more.
>>
>>53458227

It's *significantly* better than cardboard but no one is positioning the GearVR as a Rift/Vive replacement. Cardboard is complete garbage compared to GearVR.

If I had an Samsung, I'd definitely get one. They're cheap. I mean they were a free gift with S7 preorders I think. There are some cool demos and its easy to help people get a taste.

It isn't just "ok for a first experience", it's amazing. Obviously it has severe limitations, but it's high up there for the cool novelty you can get for a hundred bucks.
>>
>>53458406
>no one is positioning the GearVR as a Rift/Vive replacement.

Except that is what's in people's mind that aren't informed. They're both called VR.

>Cardboard is complete garbage compared to GearVR.

Which says little and honestly if you get a cheap $35 one with a headband that gap lessens greatly.

>It isn't just "ok for a first experience", it's amazing.

Well it depends on the experience, 360 video is pretty lame and that's what fits GearVR best because it has no positional. And yeah you can call it "amazing" but then what is that experience compared to when you get to try a full blown VR experience with a Vive or with Oculus Touch? It pales in comparison.
>>
>>53449757
I have a Gear . It drains your battery pretty quick (inb4 muh plug it in and lose all your freedom of head movement) and the phone also heats up like a bitch. You can use it for about 20 minutes until the phone's hot to the touch and the Oculus app tells you to cut it out. It's a pretty neat gadget, but smartphones just aren't made to drive VR devices, so you can't really get full use out of it. Also, the lack of head translation that the actual Rift has (my university got a dev kit) makes it a LOT easier to get motion sick.

Anyway, tl;dr the tech's not developed enough yet.

Too risky and potentially too costly if you get crazy addicted.

>Except that is what's in people's mind that aren't informed. They're both called VR.

Even uninformed consumers probably assume a $100 headset is going to be worse than a $700/900 one.

>Which says little and honestly if you get a cheap $35 one with a headband that gap lessens greatly.

Not really, the reduction in lag, better lenses, included directional pad are easily worth more than the $65 difference.

>Well it depends on the experience, 360 video is pretty lame and that's what fits GearVR best because it has no positional. Sure, which is why I'm getting a Rift and maybe a Vive if the reviews are good. But that's over $500 more than a GearVR. Not really comparable.

Even Cardboard is amazing - but GearVR offers a lot more for not much more money.
>>
>>53458506
Good info anon. I had no idea.
>>
>>53459420
Yeah, it'll be a couple years before smartphones can match something like the Oculus Rift. But if you haven't tried it, it's really cool

GearVR still costs you a $500+ phone and that's where your argument fails on both points.

>Not really, the reduction in lag, better lenses, included directional pad are easily worth more than the $65 difference.

If you own a Samsung flagship.
>>
>>53460237
>GearVR still costs you a $500+ phone and that's where your argument fails on both points.

And Oculus/Vive requires an additional $1000+ for a suitable PC. So we have nearly $2000 vs $700. So the difference is well over $1000 if you are looking at things that way. *AGAIN* not comparable.

For Cardboard, you are still going to want to have a top phone for the best visuals which *is* going to be comparable in cost to a flagship Samsung.

>If you own a Samsung flagship.

Yeah, I mean it's not worth buying a Samsung flagship just for GearVR even if it is better than cardboard. But if you do, GearVR is a lot better than cardboard.
>>
>>53460351
>And Oculus/Vive requires an additional $1000+ for a suitable PC.

People don't make that connection. We're talking uninformed people here.
>>
>>53460631
Maybe, but even an uninformed buyer would quickly find out that they need a PC and the minimum requirements just like someone who was going to buy a GearVR would quickly learn that they need a Samsung flagship.
>>
>>53460663
I'm talking more that people don't understand the difference in quality. You still have people on /v/ that go on that it's just a cell phone screen when really you can't get a cell phone of comparable quality.
>>
Because it's all new. And no one is putting the money into making this like we need!!!!

The porn industry got in on this real fast though (pic related)

>>53460687
It's new stuff. And no one really understands the quality difference since it's not out. The nearest thing is trying it out if a friend has a DK2 which is going to be rare.

It's going to be hard to really show the improvement in experience that Vive's controllers will have over Rift. Once these things are released, consumer understanding will grow pretty fast.
