Because I prefer OS X and OpenBSD
Besides, Ubuntu went to shit with the release of 11.x

This. I remember a time when these old and crusty harbard would ever only use a sun workstation.

The Pure UNIX/Micros are for kids elitism is why GNU/Hurf died off as a viable project, hth.
>>53381161
GNU/Hurd never really took off because there are more people that are content with GNU/Linux than are set on a 100% GNU system
>>53380558
But Elliot Alderson uses Debian with Gnome, desu
>>53381196
Back in the 90s Hurd started with the programmer mindshare and goodwill.
They also were very dismissive of Linux because they focused on running it on 486 first rather than their precious grown up architectures. Which eventually had the issue that new programmers weren't learning on that stuff because it was too expensive, and consequently it dropped out of sight.
Linux before v2 was pretty shit too, but it was already getting most of Hurd's devs because it wasn't so stuck on some old bat's big iron fetish.

I currently useUbuntu Linux, on a standalone laptop—it has no Internet connection. I occasionally carry flash memory drives between this machine and the Macs that I use for network surfing and graphics; but I trust my family jewels only to Linux.
>>53381410
To be fair, if you mean bricking the EFI, it's not truly bricked.
But it's a huge pain in the ass to fix.
>>53380558
Because I use Debian

>>53381499
Many bricked devices can be fixed in some way. Does that mean they aren't truly bricked?
I HAVE time to kill.
>>53381545
I guess you have a point. It's just weird to talk about it being bricked when it's a lot easier to fix an EFI partition than a dead BIOS.
>>53381608
A dead BIOS would be arguably easier to fix, considering that you can usually just change the BIOS chip (or however it's called), which is as simple as putting a different battery in your motherboard is.
>>53381410
Other Anon said Windows 10 bricked his laptop so he then installed Ubuntu.
If it was truly "bricked" he wouldn't be able to install anything on it.
What he means is he was too fucking dumb to work out how to install a consumer fucking version of Windows.
>>53381410
>bricked
>runs an OS fine
>>>/out/
>>53381545
Bricked means it requires some kind of hardware to fix it if it can be fixed at all. For example back in the CFW days for the PSP you could often fix a bricked PSP with a pandora battery or similar.
So you have bricked and totally bricked. With bricked meaning you most likely can fix it but it isn't as simple as just powering it off and on. Totally bricked means you have to replace hardware in it to fix the bricked component.
>>53381545
if by fixed you simply mean "installed an OS onto" then it was not bricked
Should I read The Art of Computer Programming if I barely know a thing about programming?
>>53381855
Absolutely not. It makes extensive use of Assembly language to describe algorithms, which is boring even for seasoned programmers.
By the way, it's not even close to finished yet. Volume 5 is estimated to 2025, volumes 6 and 7 are only planned. Knuth will most likely die before his masterpiece is complete.
