We were all getting (and probably would have) fibre to the home connections from the Labour party who was elected in 2007, but then they changed leaderships a few times and pissed people off so they voted Liberal in in 2013, who fucked up the whole plan and ended up wasting time and money by trying to change to fibre to the node, which is slower and was supposed to be cheaper but ended up costing more than fibre to the home.

In the UK I get 20-45 megabit down for 20 quid. Unfortunately BT owns all the wire in the country so even if there's a bunch of competing ISPs they're all using the same line. Unless Virgin decides to install their own line of course.
