Are you running a minecraft server or a file server to keep all of your gay cuck porn organised?
>>
>>53038249
Well, if it isn't going to be some kind of multimedia thingy I would go with Debian, since it's not important how old the packets are.
>>
>>53037589

Debian because an in place upgrade to new versions is easy

The current version of CentOS is a giant dog turd. If you're not willing to stick to CentOS 6 from 2010, use Debian.
>>
My vote goes to Debian GNU/Linux.
>>
>>53038344

CentOS because of it's ease of setup for servers, and Debian because those huge repositories.
>>
Commodity hardware, just go with Windows or Ubuntu [Server]. Real server hardware (3+ drives, ECC RAM, lots of cores) go for FreeNAS, it can host your gay cuck porn and a Minecraft server at the same time.

Looking into trying out a distro. Where would the differences lie if I get the same desktop environments for them?

More proof that CentOS is the best for servers: better support for using daemons.

Centos, stable as fuck.

CentOS 7 is just BAD. Debian Jessie implements systemd much better. SELinux is needlessly fiddly and stupid if you step one hair out of the default configurations for a package.

TempleOS

Debian is best if you want linux.

FreeBSD is better for most uses. Sometimes you need linux, though.
>>
>>53039881
You'd need to fork it and add in networking support
>>
What about fedora server edition?

Ubuntu Server just works, it's stable but still has newer packages than Debian or Centos.
In my option Debian is good for computers not connected to internet for long periods of time and Centos for Enterprise computing.

ubuntu server, not even joking

unlike debian the up to date packages aren't broken

I don't know why you are laughing at Ubuntu Server, it's pretty much the perfect Linux distro.

CentOS or Debian. If your enjoy buttsex, you can turn arch into a pretty good server, too. One of my friends swears by FreeBSD

FreeNAS (ZFS for normies) or FreeBSD (for D.I.Y ZFS)

If security is a priority - OpenBSD.

If you must go the Linux route:
OpenMediaVault (for normies) or vanilla Debian (for D.I.Y). Slackware or CentOS are also good choices.
>>
>>53037589
Absolutely without a doubt CentOS with Debian coming in a very, very far second.

The shit you learn with CentOS will transfer to a job as well as CentOS/RHEL is the industry standard linux server OS.

Also, fun tip with CentOS, you can use the official Redhat documentation which is top notch.

FreeBSD is good too if you wanna go down that path. Excellent docs as well.
>>
>>53037589

It depends on what the fuck you're doing with it.

I'm actually tempted to run CentOS for my future NAS/server running ZFS. I'm really comfy on Debian though.

Anything dealing with firewalls, networking and similar? FreeBSD because BSD network stack is a decade superior to the Linux one, use a Intel NIC if you want it to work, otherwise stick to Linux.

Anything else, CentOS or Debian.

nope, you are stuck in the last decade. ipfilter is now way faster than pf for multi-cores

I use unRAID as I store a lot of media on it and run some Usenet stuff + Plex

What would you be using it for? If your needs are fairly simple and straightforward I'd recommend OpenBSD. It's lightweight, stable, simple to setup and use, and you won't get anything more secure. This is the IS you want if you just want to install it, configure it and then forget it (for the most part anyway). There are OpenBSD servers that haven't been rebooted in years, if not decades. It'll hold up as long as your hardware does under normal circumstances.

If your needs are a little complex try FreeBSD. Again it's fairly simple and straightforward to setup and use, and it's almost as secure as OpenBSD. It's more stable than OpenBSD, but both are rock solid. Unlike OpenBSD however it has some really advanced features that puts it on par with the likes of CentOS or Red Hat. Plus the developers put a lot more emphasis on its Linux Compatibility layers, meaning that if you need it want something that's available for Linux but not FreeBSD, the binaries will still most likely work just as well, if not better.

Netflix did not touch pf nor would their CDN servers have a need for pf.

I recently switched from straight FreeNAS to Proxmox hosting pfSense + FreeNAS (I'm not stupid, the RAIDZ drives are being passed straight to the FreeNAS VM). Works well if FreeBSD jails aren't enough for you or you otherwise need a bare metal hypervisor.
