>this fucking thread

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

As someone who is using Linux for a long time now, I don't care. I use whatever works best for me for the task at hand and its really a mixed bag. The graphics driver for windows show better performance, but old windows (win xp downwards) games run extremely well in wine (dungeon keeper windowed if you want to).

Much of the free Software I use is available on both platform so there is no difference. Who cares if there is no native package manager if you can install one?

Its true that you have to drive windows more carefully. See what you install from where, see that you can remove it fully if you want to.

Its also true that you still have to invest time to tweak linux stuff.

I think the development valve does with steamOS (steam for linux) is very interesting. I am replaying Portal 2 natively in linux at the moment and it works fantasticly. If the GPU companies would invest in the linux drivers a bit more there would be no reason for gamers to not use linux as a gaming system.

Where do all those idiots get the idea that Android = Linux distros?

It's not about the kernel, you fucking retards. The kernel is irrelevant. Android uses a fork of the Android kernel but (as most people use it) is very much not open source and very much not putting the user in control. The exact opposite actually, it's used to distribute proprietary and outright commercial apps and filled to the brink with data mining to profit off the users. Thinking Linux "won" because Android uses the kernel is extraordinarily retarded.

Think like this, would you guys use Windows 10 if it used Linux instead of NT but were otherwise exactly the same (including forced updates, always-on telemetry, all closed source and so on), just because of the kernel it uses? Or do you idiots not understand that the point is not the kernel, but the FOSS philosophy that should come with it?
>>
>>52978154
it would be considered as an antitrust violation and prosecuted as such if ms were to have a native package manager, the windows "apps" is the closest they've decided they can get and remain legal

>>
>>52982255
Hell, you don't even need to do that. They could make Android PCs, for example, and it would still not be a Linux distro. The whole point of Linux distros is to have free (as in freedom) open source software that the user can review, customize and keep complete control over. Google's Android (that is, not AOSP, because Android without the Google apps is worthless for the vast majority of Android users) is the very opposite of that.
The simple idea of having a Linux distro and downloading Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Spotify and Crash of Clans apps on it is completely backwards and retarded.
