Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Just have one of your family members in the US send you one instead of money.

>>52937692
There is no "best" linux. All distros contain mostly the same packages (of varying ages) and can be riced to the same degree. Most of what spurs debate among the uninitiated revolves around default DEs (which you can change) and package managers. If you have zero linux experience, get something Ubuntu- or Debian-based. >>>/g/flt

My first generation X1 Carbon is already starting to die; keyboard barely works (f and a are damn near impossible to lightly tap or get recognized on the first stroke), mounting issues with onboard SSD/removable media, and the encasement is starting to feel flimsy. Chinks can't make anything quality.

Meanwhile, my half dozen or so older IBM Thinkpads (701 to T42) work just fine and are still in top quality.

Really thinking about picking up a used MBP or something at this point for a replacement.

Hi /tpg/, the battery on my t420 is kinda "loosey", in the sense that it doesn't stand perfectly still in its place, you can feel a little movement if you push with the finger. Not a big deal, its not like its falling out of the laptop, but I wanted to know if this happens to someone else

No. That is merely a benifit of using thinkpads. People like to hate 'newer' things on this board, just for the sake of hating 'newer things'. That, as well as jealousy, is why people make unsound claims to why they don't like the newer thinkpads.

It's been like that forever, and it will be the same way in 10 years when the majority of people on this board are shitposting from their x250's complaining about the new x280 models or whatever.

>People like to hate 'newer' things on this board, just for the sake of hating 'newer things'. That, as well as jealousy, is why people make unsound claims to why they don't like the newer thinkpads
Worshiping new garbage like a consumercuck is worse than "hating new things"when there are plently of valid reasons to hate what Lenovo has done with the line over the years

So the same was said about IBM, and now Lenovo. You call others consumercucks, yet you blindly appeal to the bandwagon opinion of hating new things—at least I can assume so, as you did not list any of these so called 'valid opinions' yourself.

The only opinion I have seen that hold some merit are:

Just got my T430 today and pulled it out of the box not 15 minutes ago. Should this thing be idling this hot? I'm just installing some programs right now
>>
>>52955661

No. Compress air it and post back the results.
>>
>>52955905
Is windows update running in the background too?
>>
>>52955905
are you idling or installing programs? you can't be doing both

normal idle temp should be under 45C, under stress testing it will get very hot, but ideally it should not get hot enough to thermal throttle
>>

What the fucking is going on on that pic?

Just upgraded my ram on my beautiful T420 for first time. I was expecting ram to be in the slot but it's in another place. so instead of 8Gb which I just bought I have 12 gb

Is everything right? Just making sure. thanks
>>
>>52957255
There's two slots, one is on the bottom of the laptop and the other is beneath the keyboard.
>>
>>52957278
Cool. Yeah I read about two slots but I figured they would use the bottom one and not under keyboard. either way all is well . My new g.skill is fine in second slot right? any BIOS changes I should do or is all well?

You're fine. RAM is pretty much an all-or-nothing deal. If it weren't working right, you wouldn't even be able to get to the BIOS.

Thinking of getting an SSD for my X200 when the tax refund check goes through, but how much of an actual difference in speed does it make? It's hard for me to think of everyday cases where disk read/write operations would cause heavy bottlenecks. The only thing that jumps to mind is hibernate/suspend-to-disk, but I don't do that very often. Maybe compiling/packing/installing very large packages, but it seems that most of the time would still be spent on compilation which is limited by the CPU speed, desu ka?

Yup. They broke the mold. Compare that to nowadays - almost every laptop is a clone of the fucking Mac - same unibody, same chiclet garbage keyboard, same same same. Oh, except color difference in some cases. Even Lenovo is guilty.

Any downsides to shoving a t420 keyboard into a t430?

It'll work but all the Fn functions will be wrong (they'll be mapped to what they are on the newer keyboard)

I know nothing about laptops, I've never owned one, but I've been looking a lot today for a laptop for work...

Why is the fucking x220 so seemingly better than anything else like it? I've been looking around all day for a convertible laptop/tablet and it seems like if you want anything with 4gb of ram, you're basically going to be paying like 250+, then you're going to get a significantly worse processor, a smaller screen, and less hard drive space until you start paying like 500~

How do these cunts do it, what am I missing? is it just the fact that it's ugly as fuck?
>>
>>52964608
From what I read the t_10 series didn't have optimus but later had them added as a revision.

I'm not sure if there's an easy way to know what revision the laptop is.
>>

17 inch older Thinkpads are fairly rare. You'd have better luck looking at one of Dell's laptops.
>>
>>52964713

>>
>>52964769

>>
What are some newer business laptops out there that have good Linux support, that are also comparable to thinkpads?
>>
>>52964608
Don't know about the T410, but I have a T510 with the dedicated GPU and it doesn't have Optimus. The integrated graphics on the CPU are actually disabled, with no clear way to turn them back on.
>>
>>52964896
You have the older revision.

You could probably find the motherboard from the newer revision to get it to work. The part number to look for is 63Y1593 I believe
>>
>>52965017
Whoops wrong part number, that's for the 410

Optimus-enabled t510 mobo part numbers are:
>63Y1544
>63Y1545

On ebay looks like they range from $50-$100
>>
>>52965118
