I love the look of the Steel w/ Milanese Band, so I guess from that perspective it was worth it. I have sustained some scratches on the steel below the display from accidentally hitting door frames (clumsy). By build quality I wasn't really talking about ports, because you'll always have one less than you need, but rather the construction of the chassis and the components within. I was a major Linux proponent for over a decade before I finally bought my Macbook after having two Dells and an Asus give me roughly two-three years each. Apple makes good products that have a somewhat excessive premium.
Pretty much every modern, commercial OS is very stable and functional, so that's not much of a concern, unless you have some sort of strong preference for one or the other.
The only people that feel a need to hate on Apple products so strongly are teenagers that wanna "be cool" by hating something popular or get mad that they can't play the latest Call of Bullshit: Modern Whatever on a macbook.
The REAL problem with their products right now is that the components they're using are hardly any different from the ones stuffed into other computers; hence you're paying for the brand, build quality and OS (though you could always make a hackintosh if you wanted it so badly).
