Sorry to whoever usually starts the new threads, I acquired something new and wanted to share it at the top of the thread because it is pretty special. My grandfather passed away some years back, and had this watch my dad bought for him at a shop that was dear to my grandfather back in NYC. It was given to me, and I am going to replace the battery and see if I can locate a replacement band or missing links for this. Looking around online, I haven't seen one cheaper than about $1,500USD.
This is a Bulova Accutron Spaceview (model 214.) My dad said back in the day, if you had an Accutron, people were like "oh shit." This is a very interesting watch with a lot of history. I am still learning more about this, reading about it and such.
This is my butchered understanding of how it works: On each kip of the tuning fork inside, there is a miniature electromagnetic solenoid (coils of wire hooked to battery), which vibrate the tuning fork at a certain frequency. The vibration of the tuning fork turns the gears of the mechanism, which moves the hands on the watch to keep time. If you google image search Boluva Accutron Spaceview it returns a lot of very cool pictures and different models. This watch came out in 1970, and my dad bought this one in about 1972. Posting a few pictures below.

Nice accutron. Here is mine.

Fuck him, I'm more and more convinced 9gag is actually extremely tasteless.

The watch is at 1,500 online? Or the parts?
Very nice watch, though.
>>52670516
Does the Rep movement have the same capabilities as 8 day? Are there any Rep movements with impressive technical capabilities?
>>52670463
Also anyone know where I could find that manual online? Might come in handy if I find an Accutron that's busted, but flawless externally.
Waiting for fake white g-shock ($3.50) and a komandirskie (black panzer tank dial, have brown leather nato to put it on).
>>52670655
A note my grand dad wrote about battery replacement some decades back. that's all for now. I'm gonna go over to a jeweler now and see about the band.
>>52670663
what fake g-shock? where did you get it for so low? how the fuck do chinks profit?
OP here again before I part with obligatory seiko posts, what I usually wear.

Love muh Seiko 5 Spirit. Had a friend ship it from Japan with original boxes and price tags and all that good stuff.
So /g/, why are 99.9% of women's watches such ugly dogshit? I'm trying to help my girlfriend pick out something decent and I'd like to know if you guys have any suggestions.
It should be dressy enough for business clothing, preferably on a bracelet but leather is ok, around 34mm and definitely more than 30mm and less than 38mm, price hopefully around $200-$300, no real preference for auto or quartz. No fake diamonds and shit.
As much as I like Seiko, their women's options are pretty fucking awful except for a couple of JDM Dolce or Exceline models I've found. It's a shame because she really likes my SARB035 but 38mm is too masculine looking, and she wears my penisquartzes occasionally but does not want something vintage. Orient seems to have only a few women's models and they are also awful. Pic related (Hamilton Viewmatic) seems perfect but she's hesitant to spend $500+ on her first real watch.
>>52670494
Thanks, yours too!
>>52670542
I think my dad said the watches start around there now, not sure about parts. Haven't done much of my own research yet.

Women are often not interested in watches, or when they are, often not nor than the most simple outward appearance and brand name matters. That's, in large part, why it doesn't pay to make many outstanding it interesting watches for women.
Is your girlfriend an especially.. large.. woman? Just curious why you're looking at only men's size watches for her.
>>52670545
I don't know about the Panerai rep but the Portuguese one lasts for around 5 days.
>>52671039
Well, it doesn't look weird at all imo, at least compared to the first Soviet watch I owned, this Pojot with 2614.2H movement. I resold it a year ago and lost some money, I hope it won't happen again.
Russian and especially Soviet watches are usually good little investments because of their collectibility, if you pick the right models you can always hope to get your money back.
>>52671193
I'm more or less trying to break even on the Poljot. Since not a lot of profit after the eBay fees.
First time i'm trying to sell though.
>>52671126
Post yours pls, I paid 30€ for mine but it's at least in a perfect shape.
>>52671165
No she's pretty thin, wrists are like 6" maybe at most. 34mm is hardly men's sized in 2016, though. I guess down to like 30mm is ok but when they get really small like pic related the proportions don't really look as good in my opinion.
>>52671403
I gave my gf a 36mm and it nearly has lug overhang. Besides that it's broken, she prefers her 26(?)mm timex a lot anyway and liked my grand-grandmothers 14mm watch.
Besides unlike men women tend to enjoy feminine looks. Something blocky verging on
being oversized isn't very feminine looking at all, even if scaled down for a qt wrist.
I wouldn't go over 32mm.
>>52671565
>Besides unlike men women tend to enjoy feminine looks.
>>52671011
>Neglecting the fact that there's more than a leather strap and dial to a watch.
There's a lot more to watches than fashion my friend. As much as anyone loves a good looking watch, the movements are just as important and have been around for decades, horology and technology in recording time has been around for 500 years (200-300 years before electricity was invented).
So if any thread deserves to be on /g/, its /wt/. Now fuck off.
>>52671565

I realise I didn't formulate myself that well.
There's the Junghans Max Bill Ladies that 32.7mm I'd probably get my gf if she actually wanted another watch. A bit above the stated budget though.
>>52671165
Nineball what got you into watches? Was it that diving experience you had with the diving watch you mentioned last thread?
New Casio cheap solar. It's almost too ugly to consider, but just almost.
>>52671167
Where'd you get that? Is there similar longevity in the IWC big pilot Rep too? How easy was ordering and how long did it take? What prices are like and do you have other reps?
>>52670710
Convince her to go vintage
>>52671900
Maybe, but she's apparently grossed out at buying a watch that others have worn. I'm jealous of how cheap women's watches are, an Oyster Princess costs maybe half as much as an Oyster Prince, for example.
>>52671403
34mm is still a men's Rolex oyster perpetual size. 31mm is often called boy's size, because it's often for small or young guys, but could go on a large woman.
If you want to get her a mechanical watch one of your best, and only options near your price range is the Orients. WZ039NR is a decent option. 411 if you get the mother of pearl dial. Quartz opens the options further. But a lot of sub300 women's quartz watches are pretty meh
>>52672038
It really depends on her size overall (not just in the fat/thin sense) and personal preference.
The tiniest women's watches are far tinier (in proportion) to a woman's wrist than a typical men's watch to a man's, a 31mm would be very fine for a lot of girls. Even 38mm may go but it'll probably look a bit bulky already.
>>52670710
Have you looked at Casio or Seiko 5? Bitches seem to like the SNK803.
>>52671213
>If the chinks put the same kind of effort in making original designs... Well actually they wouldn't make anything good, because all they know is to copy.
Truth. When it comes to rig and ship design, they still need European design companies to design for them. All they do otherwise is keep rehashing the same thing. Give 'em another 10 or 15 years and they might do better. Copy culture is a bit too big in China though.
>>52672240
Seiko 5s are really cheap looking in my opinion and the bracelets are trash. The SNK ones are also not dressy at all. I was thinking more like a 6R15-tier Seiko or something quartz but similarly good. It seems from the Seiko SAR Finder site that all the SAR* models are for men, though.
>>52672319
The Chinese could make decent watches if they wanted. The pre-market economy watches with the Chinese Standard Movement were pretty good for the time, I have a late 70's Baoshihua and there's nothing horrific about it. Too bad the standard movement is now only produced in the form of those horrible Ebay skeleton watches and shitty fake Rolexes.
The truth is fake chinkshit makes a better profit that original good-quality chink.
>>52671957
Consider something like the SYME39K
Being a 5, there's shitloads of models out and about.
>>52671744
Nope. I liked that watch in particular, but it did not spur me on to liking watches at the time.
Hard to say exactly. At some point I asked myself, as many people do, why some watches, like Rolex, are so expensive. And while some people just answer their own question by assuming it's some sort of rich person's toy and based solely on brand names and precious metals, I learned about watches, decided I liked what I was hearing about different escapements and the use of silicon, the evolution of jewels in a watch and other parts of watchmaking and decided to get into it.
But really I also like all sorts of clock and watch stuff now. Actually, if not the Credor, I was about to buy an Atmos. And if any of you doing know about this clock, you need to for sure Google jlc Atmos clock, it's a really cool piece. But I'll put of the Atmos clock for now, I'll probably be moving soon an don't really want to move an Atmos. I've also been pretty interested to get a 3d printer for various things I want to make, and I'd also totally do one of the 3d printed clocks people have made with the 3d printed balance wheel.
How about you?
>>52672374

My story is kinda off and on with watches. I guess my interest in horology first began when i was a child and always having an interest in my grandfathers grandfather clock and my great uncles clock too. Hence my love for movements and not for quartz. But later on i set my interests aside to take on education in computers etc but still being around watches such as my grandfather having 2 quartz Seiko's and my uncles Rolex if i remember rightly. But my interest in watches still remained aside.
Later on in life my friend decided to buy a watch and suggested for me to get a watch since he knew my application for complex design and engineering. I put it off for a while since i knew watch collecting would be an expensive thing to get into but none the less he convinced me to get into watches and my interest was restored again (not long ago, am still pretty new into watch collecting). I did have previous watches in the past but none of them were real expensive or serious watches. My first real watch that was a few months ago was a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. I lurked a lot here to get advice and to see which movements were good or not and to see what kinds of watches am really interested in. I even unboxed the Khaki in /wt/ a while ago.
Ever since then I've been here a lot more and have came up with a list of mid to high tier watches i plan on saving for in the next couple of years or so. I guess thats how i gotten into the whole idea of watch collecting.

>>52672711
>my friend suggested for me to get a watch since he knew my application for complex design and engineering.
I study maths/engineering and I showed the Seiko 5 i was wearing one day to a friend. He was like "k" then I told him to flip it around and he looked at it for like 5 minutes.
There's definitely something there. People who like engineering, problem solving etc. can appreciate the elegant way in which a watch movement solves the problem of keeping and telling time.
Quartz is ok, but not elegant or interesting. It's more or less perfectly solved.
>>52672757
Wa? what's the fascination with Reddit?
Is this some poor cunts joke that rich cunts don't get, coz I ain't fuckin laughin
>>52671311
Look up the perestrojka slava i posted before
>>52672785
Agree with you anon. I have a few friends i have shown watches to (online skeletons to display the movement and my Khaki) and even though it interests them, i don't think they're technically minded enough to appreciate such a beautiful yet complex design that go's into a time piece. A lot of people can take movements for neglect but realistically its one of the most amazing things to admire. Especially in today's day and age where everything is done with circuits and electricity.
>>52672819
Joke joke is r/watches are tasteless plebs, and only they would buy an abomination like that. Date subdials are really had to pull off, and that Rolex fails at it like 98% of all date subdial watches.

Oh, I bought it because its a nice looking dresser watch and it goes well with my belt and suit.
What do people think about this watch?
$279 on massdrop.
>>52673024
No, you didn't. Anyway here's one of the few watches that does the date subdial right, the SARW-010. The 31 is a bit smaller than the 1 and far enough away, so they're clearly separate, it doesn't look like a bent 311. Also the subdial is at the 6 o'clock position, not at 3, where it makes the whole face unbalanced.

Atmos is the brand name of a mechanical torsion pendulum clock manufactured by Jaeger-LeCoultre in Switzerland which does not need to be wound manually. You most should operate about about +-1 second per day or better from what I've gathered. Basically accurate enough where if you set the time while correcting for daylight savings you shouldn't need to do it outside of that.
Keep in mind it only oscillates twice a Minute. So most of your second-to-second inaccuracy is because you're waiting for the next tick

On the back is written "Stainless Steel Back Antimagnetic". Over it is carved the last name of my great-grandfather (probably done with acid during world war two for identification if he got killed by the nazis - he was a French resistant).
So that wont help. It's a manual wind watch though (I honestly don't know much about watch, I just saw the thread pop on the front page and wanted to ask about that watch).
>>52675450
Right, but do they still make any new ones? (other than ones like the atmos that probably costs a billion bucks) From searching online all I can see are vintage clocks. I found some newer bulova clocks that are in that style but aren't really mechanical, just quartz and using a motor to drive the fake pendulum.

You'd be surprised at how much one can restore a watch that looks like shit. Some of the seiko divers that they restore on ebay start out looking like lumps of rust.

I'm proud of you, anon.
Heirloom watches are the best.
I wasn't able to dig anything up after quick digging, but I'm sure there's information out there. You should take it to a watchmaker and have them check it out.
>>52675576
Nice
>>52675595
No, sorry.
>>52675594
It's old, that's the only thing I know and I don't know anybody around where I live who could help me out. I won't risk opening it myself though.
>>52675603
I will come back to the thread if one day I get my hand on a pro.
>>52675618
My watch does look old and rusty indeed. I will look into that too. Thanks.
>>52675654
Thanks.
>>52675538
The Atmos ranges in price pretty significantly, while some are well over 20k because they are special edition of have more complications, others are around only 5k.
But to answer your question I'm not sure if anyone is making a clock like that still.
>>52675674
Opening it an taking a pic of the movement won't harm it too much unless you sneeze into it.
Plus i doubt it's in running order anyhow. Pop it open, take a pic and we could at least tell you what it's worth.
Also i'm rather positive that's a Venus movement, and the earlier twin register Venus chronos started appearing on the market in 1933.
>>52675595
VDV (Soviet/Russian paratroopers) dial Vostoks are kinda popular, mainly due to their color.
>>52675618
>poo in loo repaint
Surely you're joking.
>>52670797
Thanks anon. Just placed an order for 3. This is hilarious.
>>52674199
kind similar strap on my amphibia at the moment
did you buy yours from cheapestnatostraps?
I actually didn't particularly want black PVD buckles but it was on sale so
On the left, my 13 years old watch I got on my first communion. On the right, my new watch.
>>52675715
The back is rusty and there isn't an opening when I can securely try to lift it up withotu fearing to force-break it. I will wait for more pro eyes (and also I won't post the back of it due to obvious family name being written there).
>>52673161
Got 2 of these, for my sisters. Cute watches.
>>52670494
whats the model number on this puppy, i really like the minimalist font and face style, the hands look super dope, and that smooth sweep mmmm
>>52675848
>(and also I won't post the back of it due to obvious family name being written there).
just place a white rectangle over it in paint
anyone ID this?
>>52675654
Thanks, I had to swap to the dots & dashes bezel as the standard one is dogshit ugly.

Seiko Shogun
>>52673183
Nice Homos fag, lmao
>tfw can't choose what nato to get with my ordered seiko skx007
Besides that, what are some decent brands when it comes to natos? Zulu looks decent
Seiko 5's have went up like $40
>>52673183
Love the minimalism.
Oris depth gauge
JLC grande reserve de marche
Seiko SKX009
Tudor Pelagos
>>52673846
Basically not even alcohol but it does have a percentage on the side :^)
>>52675945
A zulu strap and a nato strap are separate things.

>>52676002

>>52675888
Here you go.
>>52675945
Crown and Buckle premium natos. I cut off the extra fabric flap to make them like a zulu style.
>>52676002
they're generally sold by the same places and at the end of the day, they're practically different versions of the same strap. and it is probably safe to assume that whoever came up with zulu straps did so based on natos
nato: more lightweight, smaller buckles, originated as a military strap
zulu: a fatter, more rugged version of nato originally made for military divers I believe
>>52675953
That's a diverse collection. I really like the look of the Tudor, and that Oris is really neat, I hadn't heard of the depth gauge before.
>>52676009
pls no bully
>>52676055
Natos are 5-ring while Zulus 3-ring (although there are 5-ring "zulus") champ
>>52676041
if you want to wear em like that, maybe you should just buy the "original nato" type straps sold by at least cheapestnatostraps
they come like that by default
>like a zulu style
also 5 ring zulus are still zulus, they have that "extra flap"
>>52676081
I bought some straps from cheapestnatostraps and they were kind of shit, crown and buckle feels nicer and looks better. I guess I could've bought a 3-ring instead but these are more common so it's easier to just buy one and cut it how I want it especially since I already had the straps anyway.
>>52676120
Okay, I once cut off the extra flap on a nato and couldn't stand it really. The 2 rings just feel out of place, much better to buy one that comes like that.
>>52676120
Love the respect of the color scheme.
>>52675845
I did get it from cheapestnatostraps. Vintage brown PVD. Don't care for the PVD part, but it's a decent strap. I put it on my F-91W for shits and giggles.
>>52675901
I'm waiting on pic related in the mail.
Bringing some Chinese keks to the thread.
>>52676184
Haha, I did the same once.
It almost somewhat fits due to the PVD.
...Seriously tho, I'm starting to feel like a sheep for having all the same stuff as other /g/ents :^)

yeah I bought it for jollys but after seeing what they were able to do with a fucking dollar I actually have some faith in it. I'll post it when I get it, ordered on dec.31 and it's estimated between january 19th - feb 22.
If I would have known the fake terrorist was going to be fine I would of bought 2 instead of these

Does anyone here have a watch tool kit and should i get one since i plan on purchasing a Vostok?
>>52677217
You can get a cheap but useful one for under 20 dollars. I have one. Buy a loupe while you're at it.
>>52677217
I have this exact kit, it's kinda shitty but it works okay if you superglue the parts together after they come apart
I'd recommend looking for a $50+ one if you want quality, all of the ones on amazon have been trash. You could also buy individual pieces as you need them, as those tend to be higher-quality as well
you don't really NEED one but it does help when something goes wrong or you need to swap out some straps
>>52677273
At most it'll he used for switching straps and taking off some links in a bracelet along with switching out bezels or changing the back display. I may consider changing a case on a Vostok but for now i have no plans to do so. I'm guess thing this kit should be able to do all those things to a decent quality?
>>52675867
This style of dial has "Railroad Approved" on the face. The movement in it is a 218 tuning fork movement.
My display caseback came in today.
>>52671007
I think it looks nice.
>>52670463
We spaceview now?
Goodnight /wt/, i hope to see yall tomorrow. Love you all :3
>>52674098
That is one of the cheapest beers one can find in Germany, like .30 without Pfand. Not impressed.
>>52677346
>it'll he used for switching straps and taking off some links in a bracelet along with switching out bezels
those can be done with a knife, really, though a proper tool does make it more comfortable
> changing the back display
for that you do need a caseback opener (its a screwed-in type)
so in a way a whole toolset is sort of overkill (you could just buy a caseback opener and a spring bar tool but hey, why not? just see that the set does include those tools, which I would assume every kit does
>>52677742
I hope i'll never wake up
>Out for delivery
what do people think of the Alpinist? It looks fairly unique, though I think I would never use the compass.
>>52678017
It looks amazing, especially on leather.
>>52678017
It's very pretty. I'd get one if I didn't have so many watches I'd rather have over it.
>>52677929
I see what you're getting at anon. I'll do some research and find how much them two tools are worth together (ones that are in good quality) and i may also pickup a knife that comes with the kit just so i worry less about scratching the case or bezel with the serrations on a normal knife. I'll just compare quality to buying some cheap shit with other provided supplies.
Also do you think i should get a case holder ? Or is it an unessasery item for what I'll be doing?
>>52678017
That's actually what I'm waiting for >>52678011
Got it with that Hadley Roma strap that other anon has his with. Seeing it on that strap is what pushed me to get it.
>>52677742
Good night anon!
On topic, does anybody else here wear their watch while sleeping? I have a rubber strap for my PAM homage and the ticking is very loud and soothing so its essy to fall asleep with it srs. Wish it came with an alarm function though, but few mechanicals do...
>>52678011

>>52673359
Someone reused my image. I'm feeling somewhat happy right now.
>>52678336
Usually. Not as a rule, but most nights I just forget to take it off, really. If I decide to take a shower in the evening rather than the morning, I don't like, put it back on my wrist before heading to bed.
>>52678336
Yes. I always wake up an hour before my alarm goes off and I check my watch to make sure of the time and then I doze off to sleep again. Repeat every 15 minutes until I finally have to wake up.
>>52671167
does that actually have a power reserve of 7 days?
>>52677217
>>52677273
I have one and it sucks. Would recommend you buy tools separately. Get them from a good swiss brand like bergeon.
>watching hannibal s3
>blind female character
>wears a wristwatch
can't tell if it maybe is one of those watches for the blind, tho. but if I was making a show, I'd either make that really obvious or jus leave the watch out, it just seems weird now
>>52678011
Aww yiss
>>52679464
How big is that huldra? Looks more than 42mm (since the alpinist is 39mm last I checked).
>>52679477
Yes. It's 42mm.
>mfw waiting for my new watch in the mail
>>52679536
Oh, not bad then. If I didn't already have a watch with near identical specs I'd grab one.
