my somewhat ghetto but functional HTPC is Kodi running on an old e8400 4gb mid tower (yeah, it's fucking huge, don't care) remote controlled either by a windows media center IR that came with an old hauppage tuner card and works out of the box with Kodi, or alternatively the Yatse remote android app on my phone.

How much did you spend for the Tuner card? So tired of having to fuck with a digital antenna for the 3 or 4 times a year I want to use it.
>>
>>52641267
around $100 I think, it was just an ancient NTSC tuner card, pretty useless these days except for the remote and USB IR receiver it came with.

couch on the other end of the room. I don't have cable but I keep 4 xbox 360 controllers on the coffee table, have tons of emulators, rock sling, netflix, and NFL game rewind with a VPN to watch all the games live. I control the PC from the couch with gmote 2.0, unless I'm sitting in front of it using the keyboard and mouse.

Feel free to make fun of the wood paneling, I bought the house for cheap and this is what I have... For now.

Not really the living room I guess, but this is where most people congregate when they come over.

A hole is drilled through the wall that I run an HDMI, speaker wire, and usb extensions through to the HTPC and amp on the other side.

The HTPC is a full desktop pc (750ti, amd 6400k, the Speakers are Boston BT-1's, I get cable from a networked HDHomerun Prime tv tuner, and a couch off camera.

I can also to steam streaming to my main desktop pc for higher latency better fidelity gaming, and the previously mentioned USB cables let my plug in controllers.

its linked up to my 12tb nas that I pirate stuff to along with my Systemdek IIX turntable.

and the keyboard, best wireless keyboard for my taste, can almost use it for surfing as comfortably as my desktop.

Although be warned they can be overpriced and have quality issues.
>>
>>52641040
There's not anything to see. I use a FireStick to run Kodi because the concept of a HTPC is superfluous and expensive in comparison. It's 2016. You have options now.

wait for an alienware alpha to be on sale. You can get one for less than 300 bucks. comes pre installed with kodi and it's smaller than a wii.

What do you want to do that chromecast doesnt?
>>
>>52645278
My operating system is Ubuntu 14.04 because unity as a tv interface just makes sense. This computer runs a mythtv backend that handles scheduling, recording, and transcoding for cable tv content for 2 other tvs and itself.

The speakers on the computer are also connected to two outdoor Boston marine speakers that I control with a hidden volume knob outside. The turntable is also a sound source for that.

but on the couch all on one thing.

Also by using your own equipment to watch cable the average American family could save 200 dollars a year. All media content on one machine, one screen, imagine having a minimized instant message or video chat over your screen, or alt tabbing into cable tv when in a game lobby.

Also there are lots of really fun controller games for PC, and playing with a real keyboard and mouse is doable also.
>>
>>52645831
Can you even get cable without using their box to decode the channels? Otherwise you'd just be running the cable from wall>box>pc. Majority of people already have a tv near the pc, so they just have to turn their head. Plus you didn't want a keyboard so alt tabbing wouldnt work. You have a nice dream, but it wont be as great as you think.

You can easily have cable/chromecast, then stream steam to your tv with another box or set your big ol case next to the tv instead of a monitor and switch inputs all the time.
>>
>>52646143
The box does require you to rent an encryption card thing for 3 dollars a month, but that is a small price to pay compared to the boxes.

The pc means you never switch inputs, and you can make fairly quiet ones or hide them like I did. Many people like me keep their PC in their own area, the living room PC is like a game console on a big tv that lets me lounge on a couch. I don't sit in a char all day.

Also OP mean a full desktop keyboard, im>>52645315 this guy and my wireless keyboard is very comfortable yet small, I even typed all this tl;dr bullshit on it, and solved the clicky captcha..
