Why are you not using tiny core with your choice of de?
Easy to setup and ease of use for most people is based on the de so that's a non issue.

Currently running tiny core on an old athlon xp-m 2000+ and 512mb ram and it's smooth as butter. Give it a try, boot from a usb or setup a VM.
