Now you know:

The 'completely ridiculous graphical nonsense OS Hollywood tech bullshit' from Jurassic Park that everyone makes fun of when the girl says 'It's a UNIX system, I know this...' and proceeds to holywood-hack her way into Jurassic park's security systems actually IS a UNIX based system and she wasn't lying.

It's called fsv:

http://fsv.sourceforge.net/
>>
>>52482866
>http://fsv.sourceforge.net/
>fsv was partly inspired by fsn, the experimental 3D File System Navigator developed some time ago by Silicon Graphics. This program figured prominently in a scene from Steven Spielburg's hit film, Jurassic Park.

You are a stupid person anon
>>
>>52482866

SORRY: the original is fsn, fsv is for GANOO/LOONUX.

How am I stupid? I just linked the wrong one, the ORIGINAL is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fsn

https://web.archive.org/web/20070409024417/http://www.sgi.com/fun/freeware/3d_navigator.html

Whereas the one I linked was for made for Linux.
>>
>>52482912

Wait what
>>
>>52482912

If you are implying it was made up for Jurassic Park then you are wrong.

>>52482939

He's right but I fixed my post, the original is fsn, as posted here:

>>

Thank you anon, you are a smart man
>>
C'mon, this is a pretty good fun fact. I'm sure a lot of people on /g/ have made fun of that scene before without know this.

Listen dumb fuck, I am a sysadmin, I work primarily with linux and windows but there are a few unix systems that I support (AIX, HPUX, Solaris).

Just because you know how the OS works doesn't mean you know how to operate the security system on that OS.
>>
>>52484873
I haven't seen JP in awhile, but weren't they already physically in the facility? So she wouldn't have needed to hack anything, just know how to use it.
>>
>>52484915
Yeah she was at the console. Problem is who taught her that security software?
>>
>>52484873

When did I ever claim that? The point is that the 'ridiculous 3d graphical interface' is real, not that she would actually be able to do the things she did with it.
>>
>needing to use a GUI for a Unix system
Fucking girl sysadmins
>>
>>52484936
The reason that scene is ridiculed is because she just started using the fucking security software.
>>
>>52484965
Randomly checking the menus and clicking what sounds useful isn't really "using".
That's basically all I do when troubleshooting a software I don't know in detail.
>>
How funny, I was thinking about this scene either last night or earlier today.

This kind of thing happens almost every day. How cool.
>>
How fucking slow are you?
Who the fuck didn't know this shit?
Next you'll be telling us the Matrix used nmap.
>>
That makes it even worse. Someone actually made that stupid pos.
>>
>You live in a bad future where people don't own SGI workstations in their home and navigate their file systems in 3D virtual reality

Feels bad man
>>
>>52482866
I'm totally gonna try to install and run this shit. I never knew there was a real version of this.
>>
>>52485198
I need to put this on my old ass toughbook and browse it in public.
>>
I think that quote whenever I have to delve into my file system. It haunts me.
>>
>>52484965

I don't know if that's the main reason or not, but it certainly gets lumped in with the Hackers/Swordfish/etc. 'graphical hacking' criticism and that's what I was referring too.
>>
Well shit.
Let's see if I can compile this 15 year old code in OSX.
>>
>>52485356
I could compile it, but I don't want to install gtk+ and gtkglarea
>>
>>52485408
>but I don't want to install gtk
Took the words from my mouth.
Fuck getting gtk linked, I'll see if any package managers have it.
>>
>>52482854
old news, op.
we know all about irix & how awesome it was
>>
>>52485441
it looks like homebrew actually has a formula for fsv (and all its deps), but it's in the boneyard so it probably doesn't build anymore
>>
>>52485464
Macports seems to have it.
Taking ages to install though.
