How is the IBM Model M?
Is it comfy?
Good for typing?
Good for gaming?
What's good and bad about it, and what is everyone's opinion on it?

>How is the IBM Model M?

A great board.

>Is it comfy?

Very. The sound and feel of buckling springs is the best.

>Good for typing?

Absolutely.

>Good for gaming?

Less than ideal. Has some rollover issues. Never came up when I was using it, but depending on the game it could be a big issues.

>What's good and bad about it, and what is everyone's opinion on it?

It is fucking GIGANTIC. So much extra unused space on the case it is annoying. Lack of customization options like keycaps/cases too.

Not to mention the number of available layouts is limited.

It's not a good keyboard.

I like how you got the joke, but a towel is pretty much the best wrist rest you can get. I once had a griffiti wrist rest which I gave up on after two days in favor of the towel.

You can clean it, you can fold it to adjust the height, and it looks for nicer than some slab of silicone.

There's absolutely no reason to get one unless you're a collector or just can't get over your nostalgia for IBM stuff.

If you absolutely must have buckling springs, just get a unicomp, they're way cheaper and "modernized" enough to work with newer hardware.

Still, you're better off getting a nice cherry MX board with greens if you really want that much acctuation pressure. Model M's take almost the same amount of pressure as MX green switches, so they're comparable in that sense, but they feel totally different, and they sound different too.

This is what the Model M sounds like:

which version? there is the rapid, tk, stealth, etc.

assuming you're talking about the rapid it's pretty good really, but a lot of people will reccomend you a kul es-87 instead since it's nearly the same layout with a lot higher build quality. Honestly the price difference probably isn't justified.

there are a lot more expensive keyboards if you really want to meme it up with group buys and expensive pcb/cases, but hhkb is expensive as fuck for someone looking for a decent keyboard.

I'm fine with those compromises. I just about never used the function row or the tenkey on my previous keyboard. I never use the pageup, pagedown keys either. The only thing I use on a somewhat frequent basis are the arrow keys, which are conveniently located near the function key so I still only need one and hand to use them, but I actually have to move that hand less.

Seems perfectly functional to me.
I'm glad to have a smaller keyboard and have no qualms putting keys that I never use on a function layer. It may not suit your needs, but it suits mine perfectly fine, which is why I bought this keyboard.
What's your point?

Well, technically that's correct. But we're talking about Mechanical keyboards here.
>Mechanical-switch keyboards use separate complete switches underneath every key. Each switch is composed of a base, a spring, and a stem. Depending on the shape of the stem, such keyboards have varying actuation and travel distance. Depending on the resistance of the spring, the key requires different amounts of pressure to actuate. Mechanical keyboards allow for the removal and replacement of keycaps.
That's the definiton of mechanical keyboards.
>Topre switches are a electrostatic capacitive non-contact keyboard switch designed by Japan's Topre Corporation.
This is the descritption of topre.
>>

Removable keycaps don't make a keyboard mechanical. A mechanical keyboard with non-removable keycaps is still a mechanical keyboard. As for rubber domes being springs, they technically do the same thins as springs, but the term spring is mostly used to describe helical springs. Helical springs are made out of metal.

If a spring provides the main resistence for the switch to actuate, its mechanical. If it doesnt, its not.

Mechanical:

Cherry
Alps
Buckling Springs
Foam & Foil
Spring over membrane
etc
etc

NOT Mechanical:

Rubber dome
Topre
Scissor Switch
Apple butterfly
Touchscreen
Those nasty rubber keyboards on the Surface
etc etc
>>
>>52419078
I'm not sure. The keycaps seem to be printed on.
The case is made of PBT which I think is the reason why it didn't yellowed.
The seller sold 5 of these for 20€ with 7€ or 8€ shipping, also other cherry keyboards (G81 and G83) for the same price which don't seem to sell well.
The reason for this choice was that I own a TRS-80 Model 100 for a year with it's linear ALPS keyboard and typing on that one is fun compared to any other rubberdome kbd that I used in my life.

is around $45 decent for a Razer BlackWidow Tournament Edition 'Stealth' keyboard?

Razer doesn't do anything right, especially not keyboards.

That being said, 45 bucks for a mechanical is a really good deal. I already have two keyboards and I'd still buy that.

You can probably get the same price out of reselling it later at some point anyway.
>>
>>52425006

No.

Entry level boards that are considered decent start at around 70 bucks. You're hardly going to find a better deal than that razer thing right now.
>>
>>52425220

I'm fairly certain that despite razer being shit, it will still beat that monoprice keyboard.

I'm not telling you that razer is good, but at that price point it's more than acceptable.
