It's not a gentoo thing; rather it's a matter of tweaking your wm or de.
I installed systemd and GNOME 3 on my Gentoo installation.

i am pretty sure that is not it. There are two things that make a big difference, the WM and theme engines. Look into your WM first to see what you can do.
