Probably, dude. Especially if they made comments like that. Multi-million dollar companies talk with each other all the time. Facebook/Oculus are probably working rather closely with HTC/Valve so they can work together to corner a new market.

I could be wrong, and I'll eat my words if I do. But realistically HTC probably knew the price the moment Oculus decided on it.

Fatal flaw:
The Oculus software hates your freedom. It is not free as in freedom.

Minor flaw:
By calling it the "Consumer Kit", the product further corroborates the stereotype of the passive and powerless who willingly submit to the powers that be. It should be called "Citizen Kit" or "Mass-Produced Kit" instead.

First they introduced the dev kits which were relatively cheap. Lots of devs got on board. Development on ports has been underway for a few years. Everyone is excited.
Today Oculus announced the final product which is so much out of reach for consumers that developers won't be selling many copies of their games. This means developers have been investing in technology not a lot of people will be getting anytime soon.
I think Playstation VR is having a blast today. Not only will that platform be cheaper and more popular, all the devs who have been making Oculus games will simply port to PS4.
VR of PC can still happen, but not with this price point and not with this approach. Clunky hardware, too many wires, terribly complicated setup, and not the price ($599 or €699).

this thing needs to sell millions - probably close to 10 million - to be a success, otherwise people aren't going to make VR games.

>>
>>52271053
I think the hardware reqs are fine, but they have to recognize that due to that the rift itself cannot be expensive at the same time.

The only good reason I see here, is that this is an advanced beta testing, and they dont want widespread adoption or many people would be pissed off.

They want people with the best systems to beta test this first, after which, they'll lower the price and claim some new "update" is allowing for slightly lower specs to work, maybe.

>>52270557
Would only be logical even without the "premium experience" talk - the Vive will apparently come with the controllers included, while Zuckerstein will sell the Oculus Touch seperately in Q4 (probably for a bargain $299 plus taxes and shipping).
>>
>>52271023
It's not even just $599. You apparently need to spend another $700+ dollars for a fucking 970 and Intel's latest CPU to run 1080p screens plastered on your face "optimally".

Keep spending, good goy.
>>
This is a scam of the century.
>>
to be honest Id rather have good VR and more expensive rather than shitty cheap VR

emerging technology is always pricy
>>
>>52271146
I think its smart if they lower the price to the stable price for the fall-holiday season, but if they hold this price for a while, they'll quickly stop making money once the idiots buy it up.

esp since the existence of VR will only make nice gaming monitors cheaper probably.
>>
>>52271146
It'll fail simply from accessibility. Its because of it being such a high price for a new barrier of technology that's going to kill it when anyone would simply use the same money for another phone or anything like that, and thats before getting into the price of having a pc that can use this. Its over

If you own one of these, then you don't need a computer monitor so that's a saving of 250 right there. So on balance the cost of the rift is like 350 which is very reasonable.
