Got a 1080p TV to use for a screen but I'll upgrade to a BenQ FHD LED later.

Take out the a8, buy 8gb ddr3 2133 ram.
Then get a skylake i3 and overclock it for your gtx 970.
It shouldn't cost too much more but you'll have 2 full computers that perform decently.
Use the a8 as a steam console on your tv and your gtx 970 for the more demanding games on your desktop.
I'm assuming you mean an a8 7600 and not an a8 3800.

Skylake non k processors can be overclocked through the bclk now. Just make sure you pick up a motherboard that supports it.

get a seasonic, xfx or antec psu instead.
get 2 or 4 sticks of ram so you can use dual channel.
2TB is just $10 more.
If you wanna go benq i suggest getting their va panels.

If I was you I'd put off upgrading anything at all and start saving up.
New graphics cards will come out with a node shrink, and HBM.
Zen will either BTFO Intel later this year, or if it dissapoints it'll still force Intel to drop prices to compete.
I'm not usually a fan of the waiting game, but we're about to see some pretty big changes in both CPUs and GPUs.
AMD is promising double the efficiency with their upcoming graphics cards, you can expect something great from Nvidia too hopefully.
It's 2016 already, what's a few more months?
Worst case scenario, the new tech isn't as great as its hyped to be so you get current tech much cheaper instead.

Even if it's 40% faster it's still not as fast as skylake, pushing it back even more would just fuck them up even more.

Similar boat here, except a couple rungs down the ladder. I have a Phenom II X3 720 (mistakes were made), a 6850 and 4GB RAM.
I'm probably just gonna grab a Skylake i5 and an R9 390 or 390x unless I find a ridiculous deal on something else in the next couple weeks.

Would getting the 380x + Skylake i5-6500 also be viable? Also would getting a DDR3 RAM mainboard hurt me in the long run? Got my 8GB DDR3 just last year

Its certainly viable.
As for DDR3? High clocked DDR3 is going to last a gaming machine a long time (to be hoenst even 1600mhz ram will last a while) as few games respond to ram speed/timings.

Just make sure thats a good psu (I know nothing about XFX's lower voltage units but their 1kw plus units are top tier) and you are set for a while.
Side note before you buy anything - you'll need to check if skylake actually supports DDR3 at stock voltage. Off the top of my head it only supports DDR3L.

the only time I have ever had a 3.5 geebee issue was when i tried to play gta 5 maxed out (including AA) at 4k

Just how far do you plan to overclock your cpu? I wouldn't want to push an 8350 on a 970 board. Also: get an 8320 (or 8320e) and clock it to 8350 stock clocks.
