Hey tech support, how do I unscrew this screw?
put one of those big fat rubber bands in the hole and use a phillips-head screwdriver
if that doesn't work then use a pair of pliers and just grip the sides
>>52183894
looks like tis been stripped
Got a dremel? A file? What you need to do is cut a slot across the top and use a flathead to get it out.
>>52183936
>>52183964
Im on it captain, gunna try this
Hammer a flathead like a chisel on the side of the screw to force that fucker to rotate.
Sometimes a torx can rotate a stripped philips head.
flathead and massive preassure
>>52183988
Cant hammer my fucking hard drive
>>52183972
Even just a drill would do the trick if you're careful enough.
I strip a lot of screws. Drills have always been my friend in the past.
I bought myself a screw extractor bit set just for this bullshit on old cars.
>>52184020
fucking ez outs don't talk to me about those whores
the only thing worse than breaking the head off a bolt and having to go in with the goddamn extractor is breaking it off in the bolt and then committing ritual suicide and posting on 4chan as a spooky ghost
>>52183936
this. between these two things i was able to replaced my laptop screen.
>>52183894
either cut it in the middle and then unscrew or try rubber band trick
>>52183992
my sides
>>52183894
Use a pair of needle nose pliers although you could probably get away with using a flat head if you angle it just right.
>>52183894
install the gentoo instruction manuel
>>52183894
Be assertive.
>>52183894
This is why Phillips head is fucking shit.
Grab it with vise grips, pliers might work.
It that fails, file a flat (or 2) on the head, then try again
>>52183894
thermite.
>>52184969
blame a design for execution flaws. the level of intelligence here never ceases to amaze me.
>>52184996
This would never happen with a flat head.
>>52185010
This, fuck everything else.
>>52184996
90% of the time a Phillips head gets stripped it's because someone uses the wrong screwdriver. Honestly though, it's easy enough to do since you have the PH and PZ heads and most people don't have a set of both drivers.
>>52184962
Nah, that's for screwing. Screwout is being timid
>>52185010
Wouldn't happen with a Phillips if you use the right size screwdriver. Flat head is just more idiot proof.
>>52184969
PH is fine (tho PZ or torx is nicer to work with). people just need to learn to choose proper scredriver for the job, not just one universal (mostly PH2) for every fucking screw they see.
Try Thermite.
is there actually a specific benefit of a phillips head over a flat head (or the combination phillips with the flat slot)? i've always hated the things. i've only ever rarely stripped one myself but have had to deal with shit that was stripped when I got to it all the time. also even with a pristine screw you still have to actively push IN while screwing OUT if there's any kind of resistance, which seems dumb. even with weird shit like an alan key I can't think of another type of connector where the correct action would naturally force the tool out of the aperture unless you apply extra force
this is why everybody should own a set of reverse drill bits. they drill counterclockwise and usually back out screws as soon as they bite
>>52185142
The screwdriver stays in it. Much easier to use in tight places or with an electric screwdriver.
>>52185142
there are dozens of different phillips fittings. problem is nobody knows what they are so everybody uses "universal" phillips screwdrivers. bit sets usually come with a few different types
>>52185142
Back in the day they used them so that the automated screwdriver arms wouldn't slip in car factories.
And time just sort of made it a standard for some awful reason.
Thanks /g/ but I was able to get it out myself.
Seems like instead of unscrewing the botched screw, I twisted the hard drive inside the chassis instead.
>>52185230
>or with an electric screwdriver.
this is also the reason why it pops out if it cant turn it. to not destroy screw or tool.
>>52183894
did you try turning it off and then on again?
flatheads sucks ass too because the driver doesn't stay on the screws rotational axis.
alan heads are the best imho but require multiple wrenches (which is how it should be). stand vs metric sucks but what are you going to do, can't just use one and not the other

>>52185230
>>52185239
it seems like a better solution would be to just have a flathead but with two slots in a cross, but none of the bullshit phillips bevelling, just nice solid right angles
also since we're on the subject, FUCK THESE THINGS.
>lol you want to open me without the specific tool? fuck off
>don't even think about trying to jimmy me with anything else, i've got this bullshit bump in the middle to cockblock any regular tool
>>52183894
Speed out screw extractor
>>52185318
No matter how stupid a screw head is, it can be turned into a flathead with a dremel.
Turn it to the left OP
>2016
>not having a pair of kawaii anti-proprietary screw extracting pliers handy for this bullshit
>>52185443
ENGINEER
You're fucked if it's countersunk though
>>52183894
Get a dremmel and cut notches on opposite sides of the screw, then use a large flathead screwdriver.
>>52185402
technically true most of the time, but these things are usually very small and the bump is large enough that you'd have to have a dremelled flathead thin as a razor blade to be able to get purchase on the slats in the screw
>>52185443
Oh that's hot
$24 on amazon dot com I'm clicking buy right now

>is there actually a specific benefit of a phillips head over a flat head
So people can't unscrew everything they see with a small coin.
>>52186791
eh, i still count that as a benefit. those stupid enough to unscrew something they dont understand are removed from the technological gene pool
>>52185318
Just grab the iFixit tool set for $20 or something. Best money I've spent in my life, you can open all the things.
